  • I need a second opinion on a fic... by Firebird766 on 2010-11-11 02:53:00 UTC Link to this

Is this Harry Potter/ Left 4 Dead crossover bad enough to toss on the pile? Yeah, Harry's pretty OOC and the author has a serious problem with putting apostrophes in plurals, but I don't know whether it would be bad enough to spork, or just mediocre.

    • Yes, assuming it doesn't get better by SubjectNameHere on 2010-11-11 18:16:00 UTC Link to this

Some mediocre-leaning-bad fics do improve as they go and/or the author rewrites earlier chapters, but this is leaning so far it seems unlikely.

Ellipsis already quoted the 'charge list' so I won't repeat it, but I agree with most of it (and I'm especially peeved by the insistence on putting apostrophe's where they don't belong!)

    • I guess yes. by ellipsis flood on 2010-11-11 11:13:00 UTC Link to this

Quote: Warnings: Swearing, smart!Harry, Sorta-Slytherin!Harry, ?Dark!Harry? (not sure-at least a Grey!Harry), past Abused!Harry (slightly), Manipulative!Dumbledore, Not-so-bad!Voldemort, Major OOCness, there may be more, but I can't remember so...I may add to this list...

So many prefix!Characters, especially dark!Harry and not-so-bad!Voldemort... and oh lord the "Issues List" in the middle could double as a charge list.

I'd wait for a while if there was a second chapter, but otherwise it looks like a yes.

And it's a brand new MST from a series of rather squicky bad slashfics!

The first one may be found here, in case you missed it.
The second and latest one, on the other hand, you may find here.

Warning: NSFW, NSFB. Hopefully funny though.

    • Very nice MST by Miah on 2010-11-17 01:30:00 UTC Link to this

That was funny. You did a good job of diluting the awfulness of the fic. I laughed a lot. Frodo is a gay vampire!! I love it.

Awesome riffing. And thanks for the limb-dropping reference, I appreciate that :) (Don't know if you saw mine and PitViper's latest, but the motif continues in that one. It's surprisingly easy to find riffs on that, isn't it? Can't blame Raketooth the Amazing Three-Armed Fox for picking up a spare.)

      • Thank you~ by Rilwen Shadowflame on 2010-11-13 01:56:00 UTC Link to this

Glad you liked it. And yes, we actually used your MSTs for inspiration.
It was in part "Hey, I wanna be funny like that!"

Some things just flowed naturally; Cavan and Dayn are just irrepressible, of course, and Mazarun... yeah. Verrrrry morbid sense of humour - but hey, when you grow up in the Underdark you kind of get a free pass on that.

        • I admit I kind of stole the idea from Al's Waiter. by Laburnum on 2010-11-14 22:49:00 UTC Link to this

There's a bit in one of his MSTings where Aragorn "dropped his ear to the ground" and said "I don't hear anything," and one of the riffers of course responded with "That's because you just dropped your ear, genius!" I couldn't resist running with the gag.

          • Well, the old ones are the best, eh? by Cassie Cameron-Young on 2010-11-15 08:04:00 UTC Link to this

If a type of riff is funny, no point in letting it drop.

            *smacked* XD

            • That and they leave so very many obvious openings. by Laburnum on 2010-11-15 19:46:00 UTC Link to this

I'm still unsure what the author actually meant with the line about Skipper "dropping his body". Sort of lying down with a sudden floppy motion?

  • Possible badfic by Sergio Turbo on 2010-11-12 20:47:00 UTC Link to this

    I found this one:

    http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4970656/1/The_Final_Ever_After_Movement_I

A pair of typos, quite a lot of plotholes, inconsistencies (Sakura broke a leg in one chapter, ad three (short) chapters later instead her arm is brokes, and so on) and a hell of a mashed up crossover: the four main characters are a rather Sueish clone of Master Chief (Halo) that gets fused together with a Bionicle (Lego), a Keyblade-wielding (Kingdom Hearts weapon) Sakura Kinomoto (Card Captor Sakura), Samantha Carter (Stargate) that made a deal with the Grim Reaper in order to live longer, and Nurse Joy (Pokèmon).

If it actually is a badfic, I'm claiming it. However, if Insatiable are not canonical (they are some sort of mutated Hearthless, but I do not know if they are actually from Kingdom Hearts or not) I may need to gather another agent or two and some light-based offensive weapons. Or spells. Or maybe a lot of torches.

    • Re: Possible badfic by Quazer on 2010-11-17 17:03:00 UTC Link to this

      *eye twitch*

Putting aside my dislike for crossovers, it still is... what's the word I'm looking for? Jarring. Gah!

I quote: ""Arius, please don't kill anyone. We can kill Insatiate, but I don't want any blood in this.""

That's just one of the lines that breaks my train of thought. Don't kill anyone, you can kill someone, please no blood... *head pop*

I don't consider myself a good judge of fan-fiction quality, but that fic needs an agent over there.

      • That's why I'm going to do it. by Sergio Turbo on 2010-11-18 13:32:00 UTC Link to this

I'm going to kill this thing, but I'd like to create/recruit/borrow one more agent or two before (and, besides, I have a mission in beta-reading right now and another in the works, so this will wait). I've got only one agent able to efficiently use weapons, and Insatiate, being OCs, are probably able to see agents. So, if those things are so dangerous as the fic states, sending my current agents is suicide.

        • Accepting Agent Ideas Maybe? by Quazer on 2010-11-20 01:20:00 UTC Link to this

Maybe I could create an agent for you. He/She would be your character afterwords, so you won't need to ask permission from me to use him/her in a story. I'd just need to know what in general you wanted for the agent.

          • Sorry, but not. by Sergio Turbo on 2010-11-21 09:47:00 UTC Link to this

I prefer using agents made or recruited by myself. I'm quite picky about characters, I do not want to risk rejecting your ideas. Sorry.

Thank you anyways, I appreciated the offer!

    • Insatiable? by PoorCynic on 2010-11-13 01:48:00 UTC Link to this

There's no such creature anywhere in Kingdom Hearts canon. Based on the few chapters I read, I'd be willing to argue that this is badfic.

      • It gets worse. by Sergio Turbo on 2010-11-13 11:56:00 UTC Link to this

It grews more and more over the top as it goes on. The first ten chapeters, maybe fifteen, are not so bad, but then it's quite a mess. That's why I want other opinions on it, it can be pretty good or it can be a borderline-badfic. However, I'm quite interested in it since that keyblade-wileding Sakura behaves more like a completely original character, and I'd like to recruit her.

There's a still-ongoing sequel in which both Sakura and Carter get MJOLNIR suits. Non-augmented humans are supposed to hurt themselves due to the reaction-enhancing materials not suited for them. And, besides, even the super-lightweight one that gets Sakura must weight more than 100 kilograms (A full Spartan soldier is 450 kilos.). Sakura is a magical girl, yes, but she is actually 12 YEARS OLD. How the hell is she supposed to even being able to lift that thing? (She actually complains that it's too heavy to fight in, but she can apparently move around quite well)

        • About Sakura... by Firebird766 on 2010-11-13 18:00:00 UTC Link to this

Does it ever mention her using the Clow Cards (or the Sakura Cards... which season are we talking about here? Post season?) or the wand or whatnot? Because she could have used the Power Card offscreen. I mean, if that thing could let her lift King Penguin, it should have no problem with a MJOLNIR suit.

          • Nope. by Sergio Turbo on 2010-11-13 21:08:00 UTC Link to this

The wand gets fused with a thing she finds in a locker (just afret she finds her old things) and becomes the Keyblade, and after that the cards are never mentioned again. In the sequel, when Arius asks Sakura to better gear up, she says that she never used a gun (right) and however she has the Keyblade, but doesn't mention the cards. I think it's implied that she cannot open the book again, since the "storage form" of the wand, no longer avaible, is also the key that opens the Book of Clow.

It's implied that is post anime/manga end (There is no way to estabilish waht canon follows), I think. Sakura got attacked by the Insatiate, somehow survived and was transferred to Ever After. She spent years here to regain her memories, but her body didn't age. (Another charge)

However, the main problem with the MJOLNIR suit is the device that increases reflexes and strenght. It's both necessary to use effectively the suit, and unsuitable for normal humans. According to the Halopedia, it would cause broken bones or even death. Sakura's magic maybe helps, but that is not the case for Samantha Carter. So, we have another charge: Handwaving that, or making the Matorans (Bionicle) build better suits than the UNSC... WITHOUT HAVING EVEN ONLY SEEN THOSE THINGS BEFORE. IMHO, it doesn't make sense.

Also, did I say that one of the two baddies introduced is LORD FREAKING VOLDEMORT?

  • Anyone heard any rumours about the Locke Lamora movie? by Laburnum on 2010-11-13 21:19:00 UTC Link to this

So, "Lies of Locke Lamora" is a very favourite book of mine. (Almost no fanfic, sadly/mercifully - pick one.) Anyway, several sites have been claiming almost since it came out that WB have the movie rights and the movie will be started next year. However, no amount of searching on my part has been able to confirm or deny this or pick up any further details. Anyone else know anything at all about it?

    • Wait, what? by Tranum on 2010-11-17 02:06:00 UTC Link to this

Woah, there's rumours about a Lies movie in the tubes? I'm not entirely sure how I missed that. The only rumours I've heard that the next book is going to come out next February-ish, but I have not heard anything at all about a movie.

Sorry. If it's any consolation, the rumours about the new book being out next February aren't actually rumours.

  • Do these qualify as badfic? by Altruis on 2010-11-14 05:48:00 UTC Link to this

    The first charged fic:
    http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5812973/1/Metroid_the_Gensokyo_Project

It's a crossover between Touhou and Metroid, which itself is a problem. The entire Touhou cast is also massively OOC, even by that fandom's standards, and it directly contradicts canon multiple times. On top of that, it has several characters randomly go insane and attack people, and is written entirely in beige prose. The author even gives descriptions of canon characters in said beige prose, which are so general that anyone familiar with the respective canon already knew everything stated.

    The second charged fic:

    http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6254920/1/From_the_Sky_and_Beyond

From just the first chapter, I see a VERY obvious Stu. He can resurrect if killed, is strong enough to kill guys in powered armor(which doesn't exist in canon) with a few punches, looks 20 while actually being 1500, and various other offenses. Beyond the Stu, the story has either made a canon character look massively older or contains lime-level lolicon, as well as worse than usual fanboy Japanese.

If anyone decides to do a mission in either of these, its important to note that characters being mildly OOC and/or something being different from canon is acceptable in the Touhou fandom. Major discrepancies are not allowed, but minor changes the author likes tend to become canon. It is also important to realize that Touhou characters tend to make god mode sues look weak. All of the named characters from Harry Potter combined might be able to beat one of the weaker Touhou characters. Any agent attempting to enter the continuity should prepare accordingly.

    • Yeesh by Firebird766 on 2010-11-14 18:09:00 UTC Link to this

While I am in the process of developing a pair of Assassins and would love to take on the second fic, I've only really played one of the games (and have so far failed to complete it because of how hard it is).

Do you think I could manage it with a lot of research?

Also, what do you think would be a good counterpart to a krogan Agent? I do have a werewolf character, but he might be too cheery to handle a krogan warrior well.

      • Research will be enough by Altruis on 2010-11-14 21:54:00 UTC Link to this

        http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/Touhou_Wiki

That should have all the information you need to set things straight, as well as build up a fuller chargelist against the Stu if needed. I don't know enough about Mass Effect to help you find a partner for krogan though.

Also, the Stu has also launched the land of Gensokyo off into another dimension, leaving a hole 10-30 miles wide in the center of Japan. Add that to his chargelist.

        • It's over 100 years that Gensokyo IS in another dimension. by Sergio Turbo on 2010-11-15 08:12:00 UTC Link to this

That's canonical. However, the landscape was cloned, so no holes around. However, if the Stu is involved, that's not canon. At all.

    • Badfic. by Sergio Turbo on 2010-11-14 12:28:00 UTC Link to this

According to the descriptions, both are badfic.

Being some thousand years old is not an heavy offense in the Touhou canon, since a lot of people is much older. (Eirin was probably around 6000-7000 years ago. Yes.) However, if the Stu is an human, it cannot be: humans age just as Real World ones in Touhou. However, most Touhou characters look very young, and most of the girls look like lolis.

I know Touhou a bit, but not enough to claim them. And I've got enough mission to write, anyways.

    • I don't see why not. by Sedri on 2010-11-14 08:39:00 UTC Link to this

I don't know the fandoms, but according to what you've listed here, those all sound like solid charges, even if not enough to send agent screaming in terror. Just because they have decent grammar and spelling certainly doesn't make them goodfic. What makes you think they wouldn't qualify?

  • Fanfic for PitViperofDoom! by Sister-to-the-Queen on 2010-11-14 11:49:00 UTC Link to this

    Hey there, PitViper!

Remember when I said I'd write something about how the situation in your Halloween picture came to pass? Well, that story is now done.

I know you had to wait for this a long time, and had probably gotten to thinking you'd never see anything. The problem was that, even though the basic plot was indeed laid out in five minutes, the funny bunny refused to bite me until I'd promised it downright obscene amounts of vegetable juice (a cookie for you if you get that reference). Then there was this sticky plot point I had to work out towards the end. The solution only came to me yesterday.

Again, I apologize for the long wait, but I prefer taking my time and delivering something I can be proud of, to throwing something together in a day and having it suck.

If you read the story and it's not to your liking, then please, please, please don't hesitate to tell me so. That said, I had a lot of fun with this. It's a bit more... random than I originally intended, but I got carried away after Adder got superglued to the wall. Heh heh, yeah.

Anyway, enjoy! Here's the link: Mission: Impossible - Convincing Caleb

    • You win the internet. by PitViperOfDoom on 2010-11-14 22:38:00 UTC Link to this

I love this. That's all I can say. I was giggling like an idiot throughout the entire thing, and I have to say that drunk Caleb is the funniest thing I've read in a while.

Glad you had fun messing around with these guys.

      • Gleeeee! *explodes* by Sister-to-the-Queen on 2010-11-15 11:29:00 UTC Link to this

        *pulls self back together*

I am so happy you liked it. Caleb was actually my biggest problem. I just couldn't come up with a way to make him suddenly 'compliant', so to speak. Then, finally, I thought of consulting the PPC substance menu. The rest was easy.

I apologize in case I got Jack's (or anyone's, for that matter) personality wrong. I really didn't have that much information to go on, since so far Jack's only had two cameo appearances in your work, so I just had to wing it. That said, he was my favorite character to work with. :)

By the way, I checked out the rest of your dA gallery. This was mainly to get more info on the characters in the story (Caleb from the 1920s and stuff like that), but I looked at some other stuff too. Love it, especially the Good Omens pictures. Those are so... sweet.

Afterwards, I went to look at some GO fanfic. It's truly amazing to see a fandom comprised almost entirely of really good writers. Blew me away. The result, of course, is that I am hooked. I haven't even read the book yet (ordered it just two days ago), but I already ship those two. And believe me, honey, when I ship, I ship, and I never let my OTPs go. Ever. I get way too attached for that.

        ...

You are scum, you know that, don't you? ;P

One evening, I also clicked on a certain link you posted. When I was done reading, I went to the mirror and checked my eyes for spirals. You have permanently ruined my spaghetti experience. I may never forgive you. Would you like links to some more of Ito's work?

(By the way, the bunny reference was to 'Bunnicula', a vampire bunny that sucks the juice out of vegetables. I am weird.)

Sorry if this reply is too long. I'd just thought up so much stuff I wanted to say to you.

    • About beta-reading requests... by Sedri on 2010-11-16 23:14:00 UTC Link to this

Generally, if no one replies to such requests around here, it's because no one has the time or the background knowledge to help you out. Your first post hasn't even fallen off the first page yet; it won't have died from being unnoticed. Chances are, I'm afraid, that no one is able or ready to help you at this point.

Also, if I may be blunt, this is a community, and as such, we tend to be more inclined to do favours for each other when we have some familiarity with said people; given that the only threads you've taken part in are related to your request, that makes it a little hard for people to get to know you. In fact, I'm still not clear on whether you want to join our community and enjoy the PPC for what it is, whether or not you write missions, or whether you're just here because you heard that we're good beta readers. If the former, I would suggest actually taking part in more discussions. If the latter... you're not likely to get much of a response. Solidarity and all that.

All that said, I'm afraid I can't help beta read for you - I've never even heard of the fandom, and I'm very busy just now. Sorry.

As to your query about 'how it all works,' we just like to get to know the folks who hang around. So yeah, join discussions, comment on things other members write, join in when we're playing games...just generally have fun and be yourself, so we know who you are! I hope this was helpful...

Hi! Have a Pie of Rassilon and a pet cat. The pie is yummy. The cat is a calico. Do not eat the cat.

As to the grammar/spelling/punctuation thing, don't worry. Anything that you've written, you can ask for beta-readers to help you with, and most of the time someone will.

    • Re: starting to hang around here! by Quazer on 2010-11-17 17:28:00 UTC Link to this

Hello fellow new person. Maybe I'll be able to help with the spelling/grammar/punctuation/whatnot you need help with. If you write something for the Board and want it reviewed, I can beta-read it.

Apparently PPC wants you to hang around for a month or so before you can be granted permission, so it's a good idea to participate in some of the other topics. It would be good language partice.

About your question: "Could anyone tell me how it all works?", could you be a bit more specific?

      • Re: starting to hang around here! by sunny_complicated on 2010-11-17 21:26:00 UTC Link to this

For example I don't know how this board works. Is this the only page or there are more? BY other topics do you mean relying other people's posts, putting links to fics I think are bad? That kind of things I mean

        • There are more pages. by Becky-of-the-drayni on 2010-11-18 00:06:00 UTC Link to this

There's a button at the bottom of the main Board page labelled "Next Page". Clicking on it gives you...well, the next page, with slightly older posts. I'm told the archives don't go on forever (or even back to the beginning of the Board), but I've looked back about a year and a half and not reached the end.
People don't often go back past the first page, so don't expect others to notice if you reply to something older.

Please dont' worry about the camera. I got a baseball bat so I can turn it off, but I don't want to right now. You didn't let it watch The Ring, did you? Or any episodes of Doctor Who involving Weeping Angels? They told me Mark Sevens were Weeping-Angel-proof, but maybe they were wrong. If the baseball bat doesn't work, you might want to try *lifts sledgehammer* this. Good luck with the not dying/being eaten.

    ...Hi...
It's been over a month since I first started posting on the Board, and I'd like to request permission (as the subject line hints at). I posted this eariler, but I didn't get a response from any of the Permssion Givers, so here it is again.
Agents - Travis and Jen. Travis used to work for Team Rocket, and Jen was an Officer Jenny cadet. Both fell into HQ on the same day and wound up as partners, much to their annoyence. Jen is very strict about rules (she sometimes forgets she's not in a police force) and is easily angered. Travis is generally very hyper and is a huge kleptomaniac. Jen's very Lawful Good, while Travis is Chaotic Neutral/Evil.
I might come up with some more agents later on.
Writing sample: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5782852/1/The_bSockpenguin_b_Adventures. This is a Pokémon fanfic with a mostly OC cast. The chapters that are up were reworked recently.
Fanfic: I'd like to spork My Inner Life. Yes, that My Inner Life (http://linksqueen.tripod.com/mil.html). I know it's a major doozy, but I've got some ideas concerning it.

    ...What do you think, sirs?

    • Hi. by Vixenmage on 2010-11-18 04:34:00 UTC Link to this

After talking this over with Makari, I'm going to have to say no.

Your writing sample seemed lacking; it wasn't emotionally engaging, and seemed very focused on the logistics of the game, instead of character development. Your character showed potential at first, but I found a lot of her actions towards the Piplup very illogical-- it seemed like you were trying too hard to set up the Pokemon-as-Tools archetypal character, without giving in-story reasoning. With your Agents' descriptions being so vague, it's hard to approve Permission without knowing that your writing style has improved since that sample to the point where you won't fall into the same traps with them.

Don't take this as a final ending-- feel free to work on your agents and writing sample, and re-apply! Plenty of people do, and I'd hate to see you give up entirely just because of this. I would recommend adding an introduction to your Agents with your next application-- it makes things much easier for PGs to see what you're planning to do with them.

(As an aside: please try to avoid re-posting a topic before it's fallen off the first page of the 'Board. Every new topic does push an old one off the edge.)

Gremlin leapt over the back of the loveseat and landed next to her partner, who was glaring at her laptop. "What's up, Xerry? You're looking a bit more grim than usual."

"I appear to have taken some sort of misstep in regards to my email," the Nobody replied. "Take a look for yourself."

Gremlin hissed through her teeth as she skimmed the laptop screen. "That's some nasty spam you picked up. Inadvertantly hilarious, sure - I mean, who ships their documents with their expensive African artwork? - but still nasty. Want me to take care of it?"

"If you can make any progress where I have failed, I would be most appreciative." Xericka passed the computer over to Gremlin.

The dark-haired girl scanned the screen again for around a minute before closing her eyes and pressing her fingers against the laptop shell. The lights in the room flickered for a split second. There was a hint of ozone in the hair.

Gremlin's eyes snapped open. "Done. Problem solved," she said as she handed the computer back.

      "What exactly did you do?"

"Nothing big. I just used my powers to trace the spammer back through the system then erased his hard drive."

Xericka raised an eyebrow. "You have the ability to do that?"

"Ehh..." Gremlin waved her hand non-committally. "It only works about 20 percent of the time."

"I see. Thank you for trying anyway. The effort is gratifying." Xericka paused before giving her partner a blink-and-you'd-miss-it hug.

Gremlin smiled as she propped her feet up on the coffee table. "Here to help, that's me."

In the States, at least. I don't know about anywhere else. Anyway, the point is that this sort of thing usually heralds some sort of discussion around here, so I'm starting one. {= )

SPOILER NOTE: There are none in this post, but I can't make any guarantees about posts to come. Posters should be aware that some people may not wish to hear plot details about the movie even in this day and age of literary enlightenment (read: all seven books being long-since published) and should take care to warn others if they plan to reveal them; readers should read at their own risk.

So, did anyone go see it at midnight? Was it exciting? If you've been following HP since the very beginning, is the spark still there, or has it faded? If you're new to it, what drew you in, and what made you stay? Were you disappointed by choices made in the movie? Were you happy with them? Six of one, half a dozen of the other?

Perhaps most importantly, will this herald a new flood of HP badfic?

    Discuss!

First, the release of Book 7 was way more exciting than this. Fans had been guessing about it for months, wacky theories were everywhere, and everyone was really jazzed. Now it's mostly everyone saying "Gee, I wonder what they screwed up."
Second, there's probably going to be flood of badfic. There's plenty of H/H Ship Tease in the first part, which will delight H/H fangirls who have not read the books and will have their bubbles burst by Part 2. Besides, Movie!Hermione's getting really pretty, and she's already intelligent, which is just asking for a flood of Sueage...poor girl.

    • Er... *cough* I saw it last night. by Sedri on 2010-11-19 08:14:00 UTC Link to this

Time difference and a different release date, you see.

No spoilers (unless some strange person around here has not read the book), but I liked it very much! The only - and I mean ONLY things I would change are trading off a little of the epic landscape shots and character interaction during the Never Ending Camping Trip (which felt even more like so in the book than here) for a little more time with the Dursleys - who had a grand total of thirty seconds' screen time, and we didn't even see Dudley's face - or maybe a little more of Tonks and Nevill (we actually saw more of Hermione's parents than both of them together, which is a shame).

I think the spark has faded a little for me personally, just because time has passed and I'm more invested in new fandoms right now. The choice of where to split the two parts was just fine and I have no issue with it. They added several very funny moments and smoothed over the sections that had to be patched quite well. Dobby and Mad-Eye Moody got at least five amusing/endearing lines each, for pretty transparant reasons. They certainly made it darker, too - when they're in Malfoy Manor and Bellatrix has Hermione upstairs, she screams in such a way that made me shudder; like she really is being heinously tortured.

And... that's all the random things I can think about. Sadly, I think it will indeed herald a new flood of badfic, because new movie releases always do. It may be lesser than previous ones, though. I suspect the vast majority of it will be about the Harry-Ron-Hermione interrelationships - all shippers will easily find something to support their chosen pairings. Brace yourselves, mates.

  • Plot Holes in Published Works by Calista on 2010-11-19 14:48:00 UTC Link to this

    Let's discuss plot hole theory...

We're discussing the new Harry Potter movie, and someone mentioned that the last one had "plot holes big enough for Harry to fall through." Plenty of published works have plot holes.

The Giver, for example, states that there are fifty people born each year in the Community, and that each family is only allowed two children, but that some families never apply for children. Do the math, and you get extra children. Oops! Plot hole.

So we have natural plot holes in many stories; perhaps most continua have them. What effect do they have on the continuum and its stability?

    Me brainstorming:
*Natural plot holes are weak points. If you get the wrong fanfic too close to them, the continuum can be destroyed more easily. However, goodfic can be specifically created to fill a plot hole and strengthen the continuum.
*Natural plot holes can be used to one's benefit, because they are often the places where misplaced and replaced characters and locations show up.
*Natural plot holes interfere with portals, like turbulence for an airplane, and can create problems with navigation by using the portal generator and remote activator.
*It may be possible to use natural plot holes for transportation... but you never know where you'll end up.

    Ideas, anyone?

    • I'm having a similar problem with biology in a Gorillaz fic. by Laburnum on 2010-11-20 22:00:00 UTC Link to this

See, in the fic I'm trying to spork, our heroes inject the Mary Sue with deadly nightshade in an attempt to cure a gunshot wound, and for reasons which are never explained it instantly heals up the wound and brings her out of her coma. Even though it was, I repeat, deadly nightshade. However, we're talking about a continuum in which head injuries make your hair turn blue and it's possible to live through having most of your internal organs removed and someone else's put in their place with rusty cutlery for surgical tools and absinthe as anaesthetic. So, you can see, I was unsure whether this counted as a charge. I still think it does, because the canon weirdness seems to run on the Rule of Funny, whereas the nightshade thing was apparently pulled out of nowhere purely for the convenience of the author.

    • It's somewhat similar to conventions, but not quite. by Aeidhryn on 2010-11-20 15:46:00 UTC Link to this

In the way that you deal with them. I.e. in a musical, you never question why or how all these punks suddenly know how to dance together and sing in the same key, and all that. You just sit back, relax, and enjoy.

There is a point where this goes too far, hence the necessity of sporking. But sometimes, if you can read without it constantly bothering you, it's fine. And, like Araeph has demonstrated, sometimes there's a logical explanation.

I have similar problems with Inception - it's fascinating, but there are some internal contradictions that (Trojie and) I have basically decided to handwave becuase there's no reasonable way to fix them. In terms of how they affect the continua and PPC missions, I like your ideas. They could certainly be used for fun and for interest, or even just as warnings or explanations. :)

The second and last ones seem more likely to be badfics plotholes to me, but when I wrote that I was thinking about plotholes in filmverses (I barely remember Hermione giving Harry Regulus'reliquary -I don't know if it's the right word- in a weird way, I think Dumbledore left it for them or something like that, my memory isn't serving me right)
But natural plotholes may cause Agent insanity increase, like a collateral damage or something like that

Yep, apart from the OC who everyone wants to rape for apparently no reason, BB seems much more maniac and happy to kill than what he is supposed to be, and I agree that the jam issue is overexaggerated. Basically, if you want to write something that will be part of PPC canon - a mission or interlude featuring Agents/Flowers/etc. - you will need permission for that. MSTs and artwork you don't need permission for, as they aren't really part of PPC canon (unless you're drawing other people's creations, in which case I'd ask their specific permission first).
