I wrote this last year for English class. (I got an A on it, I think.) Just for the heck of it, I went back to it, touched it up a little, and posted it on DeviantArt. I didn't put a mature rating on it, so you don't have to have an account to read it.
Apologies for the glurgy Artist's Comments.

I do like it. It's not my genre, but I can't deny it's well-written. You seem to have the hang of something I've never been able to do--the ability to actually tell a story briefly, with all of the words having a purpose, instead of rambling on uselessly. Lucky you! :P Yeah, you deserved the A. I wonder that sometimes because profs will just go, "Oh, it's all spelling/grammar corrected; give it an A," but this one deserved it.

I'm stunned. Simply stunned. Your short story roped me in and held me fast from the very first sentence, and that's a rare thing for a story to do.
Somehow, you manage to give density and raw emotion to a character with only a few lines, instead of burying your readers under tons of irrelevant exposition. You don't tell, you show. And above all, you really made me care about Jason and Emma and Tyler, and feel thoroughly sad about what had happened. You really made me hate Amy. Your characters are people, not just cardboard cut-outs.
All this, to me, is the mark of true literary talent. I loved it. Bravo. -

I agree with Nesh about the ending not being vague at all.
Also, I also wish people would learn these lessons. They never seem to, though. Alas.
Now for some talk about the actual work. I like the format that you chose. The differences in tone from the guys to the diary, and even through the diary, were distinct, which is nice. All in all, I think it deserved that A and I would love to see this expanded into a longer piece.
Well done.

The end isn't vague--not if you're paying attention, anyway. Just takes a little story math to put it together, which ought to be allowed.
We weren't allowed to use that sort of thing as a plot device in the first writing class I was in, because the professor thought it was too easy, too cliched... but I don't think there's any other way you could have done it here. It needs that finality to drive home the point. And I think the way you chose for it to happen is good, especially with all the publicity about it. Makes it very plausible.
Now, I'm sure I'm being vague, but that's because I don't want to spoil it for anyone else who might read. Which you should. It's short, and it's good, and I think we've all experienced some degree of feeling shut out when our friends have new relationships (or doing the shutting out, even). It's pretty natural to have a period where there just isn't room for anyone but that new person--but it goes away in time, one way or the other, and it helps if you at least TRY to remember your other friends in the meantime.

"pop" NEW GUY!!! by

I’m lost… I’m lost… I’m lost… well, I think I’m lost. Anybody know the way to the introduction area of this white place?... Okay, I think I’ve found it… no wait… wrong department… GOTCHA!!!
Hey, everybody I’m Vilstrup… well, that’s what people call me… I think.
Anyway, I’ve been writing on fanfiction.net for a while, and suddenly I fell over the PPC. Having stalked the PPC wiki for a while, I decided that I wanted to try and have a look… either that, or shoot myself in the foot, but let’s not get into details about that part.
As for fanfiction, I have a love for Star Wars, Stargate (SG-1 and Atlantis), Land Before Time and Halo, and I’m trying to write to these fantastic universes, however many of my stories have yet to completed. The most logical explanation for this, would either be solar flares which constantly incinerates my computer, and thereby my documents, or simply because I take more pride in writing reviews and help people with their stories. The most logic reasons why I came to the PPC, is these.
1. Hopefully make myself better at reviewing, and thereby helping people
2. Help people
3. Have fun
Anyway, nice to meet you all, and hopefully I’ll meet you out on the board.
Is this too much?? -

A) this is not too much
B) Welcome
C) I'm the Perpetual Newbie, Official Foot-In-Mouth, and All-Around Lurker.
D) Don't worry about the odd gifts, you can just keep them in my-
E) Handy-dandy fairy box! From Ella Enchanted. Not the movie, the book. Most definitely not the movie.
F) Good solid reviews is *literally* what makes the ppc work. *See 'concrit' in the ppc wiki*, so good for you.
G) You will most certainly have fun here.
H) You may not be able to fit the tall ship anywhere legal, but everyone has one so don't worry about it
I) It says on the top of the Board this is also a place for nattering on, so don't be shy
J) But don't post more than 2 threads in one day because it pushes old ones off
K) Do you read Terry Pratchett books? It might be wise of you to do so since there are so many inside jokes on those ones. Also Lord of the Rings
L) Are you going to write any agents?
M) You don't have to.
N) Don't mind me; I just like the letters
O) Your post was *obviously* not too long as you can see by my demonstration... natter natter nattering on
P) I will refrain from using the entire alphabet, because if I continued I would have to use something weird like double letters or the military alphabet, and I can't even go past the letter L in the military alphabet -

You here a sound. It was faint at first, just at the edge of one's hearing, but as the wind kicked up, the sound came in clearer, louder. A screeching, grinding wail, rhythmically pulsing like the beat of a human heart. A light appeared, shimmering in time, and with every pulse grew brighter. Then, with a clunk and a whir, a large blur police box solidified, the wail petering off into a gentle sub-sonic hum. The Door on the side of the police box opens and a tall thin man pops out.
"Hello, I'm the Doctor." To the uneducated observer, this tall thin man looked like some kind of crazed old-fashioned professor, with his tweed jacket and suspenders and bow-tie, but he was too young to be a professor, his hair hair coiffed in some kind of ridiculous pompadour. But his eyes, his eyes gave away what he really was. They were eyes that had seen empires rise, galaxies come into being, stars being born, and all of them return to dust. Eyes that had seen everything. Eyes that right now were looking rather confused.
"Oh, I am terribly sorry madam," He said after looking around. "I seem to have wandered into here by mistake. I'll be going now." And with those words the man popped back into his box and, in a inverted but similar method to its arrival, the police box vanishes. As the last waves of sound fade an average sized, average blond man in a black duster comes charging around a corner with a black backpack in hand.
"Think fast." He says, tossing you the bag as he runs by. "It's a bag of holding. Have fun and try not to maim anyone." Just as he finishes he goes around another corner. -

Please remember that it is not necessary to tell us (via a new thread) that you are back, or gone again.
People are in and out of the board all the time for short spells. And each new thread pushes an older thread of the first page and a very old one into oblivion. We frown on that, so unless it's the first time you're here or perhaps the last time, it's not necessary to mention presence or absence.

Hello. My name is Crow, and I am a newbie.
I'm more of a RPer than a fanfic writer, but I still have a strong dislike for poorly done OCs. The fandoms I lurk in most include Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, Kingdom Hearts, and LotR.
I apologize in advance for any and all typos and grammatical mistakes, and for overuse of emoticons in posts. ._.;; See? There's one now. -

"Oh, I am terribly sorry sir," He said after looking around. "I seem to have wandered into here by mistake. I'll be going now." And with those words the man popped back into his box and, in a inverted but similar method to its arrival, the police box vanishes. As the last waves of sound fade an average sized, average blond man in a black duster walks around a corner and slows to a stop next to you.
"Rammu." He says, looking you over. "You must be new. Please allow me to give you a gift." He hands you a book titled 'How to Make Your Own Keyblade by Tetsuya Nomura' and walks off. "Have fun now." He calls over his shoulder. -

Badfic baby needs a womb by

There is a story that I want very, very badly to do a mission on, but right at the end of it, it says one of the canons is pregnant. My only female agent is considerably less than matronly, and I'm not ready right now to deal with the arc that being pregnant would set off.
Does anyone have agents that might be willing to take on a pregnancy? It would be a near full length pregnancy. I am pretty sure the character was less than three months along.
The canon parents are Samantha Carter and Jonas Quinn of Stargate SG-1. Sam is blonde with blue eyes, and Jonas has light brown hair and brown eyes, both are pale complected, tall, and exceptionally brilliant. Jonas' is definitely genetically based. -

Lots of continua have ways to bring a baby to term without a woman involved. I'm thinking specifically here of Brave New World's assembly line method, the Vorkosigan Saga's uterine replicators, or the Matrix's method of growing people. Most sci-fi continua have similar arrangements but those three are the ones I can think of that are the best described.
I wonder if HQ has a crew that can go into badfic and retrieve useful technology before the regular agents kill it? -

the Embryo Extraction Kit, sometimes affectionately known as the debugger, and often used with a bottle to store the infant in until it can be taken to Medical. Though mostly used in MPregs, I'm sure it can be used in cases of just plain wanting-to-save-a-Sue's-baby as well.
And yes, there is a division in DoSAT - Testing and Application - specifically dedicated to finding andstealing retrieving canon tech from badfic. They would probably appreciate being invited along to such things. -

Medical probably does have access to one or more of those technologies, do they take the normal nine months to work? I've got to go read the episode where Pads gets pregnant. I've read about the birth, but not the beginning. -

I just realized how totally appropriate and awesome it would be for a Tok'ra agent to raise a child of SG-1 characters.
If you for sure want the baby, then it is yours. Does your Tok'ra happen to know any medicine? Would you be interested in a collaboration on this one? -
Sure. by
on 2010-09-26 00:41:00 UTC
Link to this
Well, I hadn't made any concrete decisions about the various special knowledges of the character, but yeah, she probably would have some medical experience under her belt. Hmm...
That brings up a very interesting idea. She's in Bad Slash, and medical knowledge would be highly useful in that department, especially with all of the craziness that goes on in there.
So I guess it's a broad yes: I'm interested in a collaboration and my Tok'ra knows medicine. I'll have to draft up her character page on the Wiki, but that won't take long. How soon do you want to do the collaboration? -

I would guess that a Tok'ra would work a lot like a Goa'uld. Remember when Sha're was pregnant, her symbiote (whose name I am forgetting right now) had to go dormant to prevent loss of the pregnancy. I can't imagine it would be much fun to have to put half of a character into hibernation for six or seven months right after you get the character.

First up, I'd just like to say that I love interludes. They give so much more texture to the PPC, as though it were a World One organization.
Believe it or not, but I already had this sneaking suspicion that the Marquis and the Kudzu had something going on. 'She' certainly doesn't try to hide it, what with the perfume and all. This could be useful for blackmailing the Marquis. *evil giggle*
'Ware the evil broom-closet. That Sunflower's Witness gives me the creeps, too.
As for the SO, how is it possible to both be and not be in blatant denial? Guess all the years of leading an insane asylum are really starting to 'get to him', if you catch my drift.
Oh, and Durotar and Kur'nak are so cute together. I hope to see more of them. -
Thank you. by
on 2010-09-30 07:31:00 UTC
Link to this
I am glad you enjoyed it and that you found so many things to be enjoyable/worthy of comment.
The Kudzu/Marquis pairing has been floating around the PPC for quite a while due to...shady, behind-the-scenes type people. They shall not be named...for my safety, you understand.
Also, since the broom-closet has been disclosed, you will likely not find the Sunflower's Witness there. She resides in an undisclosed location, as I said in the interlude. That is why she is so hard to find and apprehend.
Also, also, I will answer your other post here as well. The Sandal of Acacia was indeed thrown in the TOS, but it has a lengthy history that encompasses this piece, by Neshomeh. The Sandal is a relic of much power.
Again, thanks for the comment. I am glad you enjoyed yourself.

Character name generator by
on 2010-09-28 08:13:00 UTC
Link to this
Hi, everyone!
Yesterday I've made a program that can automatically generate names for characters, places, thing, or really just about anything and I'm putting it up here for you to try out.
You can download it here: http://pic.sempre-vigilans.net/up/namegen.jar
To run it, you need to have Java installed. Get a list of your favourite names (or just use this one I made: http://pic.sempre-vigilans.net/up/swtest.txt ), open the command line (or bash console, or whatever you're using) and run it like this:
java -jar namegen.jar
The similarity parameter is a number that describes how closely do you want the results to resemble your input. Lower values produce strange (and occasionaly funny) results, higher values resemble the input more closely, but will take longer to generate (a lot of duplicates will come up and be discarded - if you overdo it, it may even seem to freeze up). So, for example, if you download the text file I provided into the same directory as the program, you may run it like this:
java -jar namegen.jar swtest.txt 7 10
And you should get a list of names that almost invariably contains "Shmi Skywalker".
So please, try it out and share your results and name lists! -
And another version... by
on 2010-09-28 09:27:00 UTC
Link to this
Download this: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5471685/NameGen.jar, and then double-click to run it. Choose your list of favorite names with the "Choose Source" button, and then "Generate!" generates the names. "Lookahead" is Prospero's similarity parameter, under a shiny new name.
(Requires Java, which can be downloaded here)

Hey, everyone. So, Miah and I just finished writing a joint mission between Agents Miah, Cali, and Maeryn/Kaliel, and we need at least two betas: One for general SPAG, and the other to check for proper characterization of Season 6 characters of SG-1 (Sam, Jack, and Jonas). Please note that this mission is probably going to be rated M/R when all is said and done, and does contain descriptions of violence, illogically massive injuries sustained (And survived) by a character, and other mature subjects. Please comment here if interested.

I'll e-mail you that bit first, and continue working on the rest of it-- I've had various RL issues crop up, and a coworker ambushed me with a similar request for a philosophy paper around the same time. I am working on it, though, promise. Just gotta be reminded from time to time. -

Nah, I don't really vanish, as a general rule. Hey, pop in the IRC sometime, I'd like to go over some stuff real-time with you-- might be easier.

It's more of if we've measure their ooc-ness correctly rather than our own characterization of them.

Mission beta needed - LotR, 8,292 wds by

Link to this
So... pretty much what it says - I need a beta reader for my first mission. It's for a Lord of the Rings Action/Adventure fic. The original fic is very violent and graphic, but the mission isn't. I'd love it if someone could check it over and let me know whether or not it's funny and whether the plot makes any sense at all before I post it up for everyone to see. Also maybe a skim for SPAG, though I have checked it.
Thanks very much in advance!

as well as general plot flow and whatnot. Like Miah, I don't have encyclopedic knowledge of LOTR, especially outside of the trilogy, but I'd be more than willing to help with what I do know.
-
That would be good. by

The main SPAG I think I need is just a check to see if I've missed something, and for LotR knowledge, the only thing I'm unsure about is my characterisation of Elrond. If you could look it over, though, that would be great.

Don't mean to rush you when you're already doing me a huge favour, but just wanted to check you'd got it - I'm always afraid I've made a typo in the address and just sent my E-mail off into the uncharted wastes of cyberspace when E-mailing someone for the first time.

check for basic storyline and content, though not at all for SPAG, and I'm no good for verifying details of anything ultra specific to LotR (especially anything outside the trilogy).

The main thing I'd need verifying as far as LotR canon goes is my characterisation of Elrond.
Should I E-mail it over? -

This user has been spamming several communities, and I think it needs dealing with. If multiple people report it, presumably it'll get cleared up quicker. -

Tomorrow's my 21st birthday, but I won't be around Friday or Saturday, since I'm going to my older cousin's wedding Saturday (weird, isn't it?)
So yeah, just wanted to let you all know early, seeing as I won't be here Friday. -

depending on where you live, you reached drinking age at a very good time.
