  • NaNoWriMo Alert! by Vixenmage on 2009-11-02 20:35:00 UTC Link to this

What, seriously? No one has anything to say about this very special month? I'm first?

What is this world COMING to?

Okay, so for the uninitiated: NaNoWriMo, short for National Novel Writing Month, is an international contest to write a 50,000 word novel in thirty days! Specifically, the thirty days commonly and collectively known as "November" by most of the population.

So! Who all is going this year? Anybody up for trading tips, secrets, favorite distractions or lack thereof, NaNo usernames, anything? What are y'all doing for plots, characters, general context-related issues?

    • I love to, but... by Cinnia Aine on 2009-11-04 01:48:00 UTC Link to this

November. *sigh* Why does November have to be so busy? Instead, I'm doing my own personal version of WriSoMiFu. It's simpler because it only requires ten minutes a day, not about 1650 words a day.

    • I'm writing... by doctorlit on 2009-11-03 01:47:00 UTC Link to this

...but my story probably won't reach the full 50,000 words. I don't have the patience for that, and I don't think it needs to go that long. I'm just using NaNoWriMo as the motivation I need to get working on characters I developed a while ago, but didn't do anything with.

The story itself will be a fantasy setting that reverses the common trend of linking light with good, and darkness with evil...which has produced a rather odd fantasy setting with lots of tropical regions, and also well-dressed zombies. The plot itelf will focus around a broken sword, but I haven't figured out why the bad guy wants it yet.

    • Not for me, but... by Maudlin Hart on 2009-11-03 00:23:00 UTC Link to this

I'm writing a short humor story based on the fact that I have a huge thing for demons and silliness. It's about a wizard who's a bit of a jerk, and he summons a demon to destroy his enemies, and things go rather awry. One of the characters is an undead crocodile. The thing is, the demoness is a pretty shameless self-insert, and I want to make sure she's not too much of a Sue. Her name's Vix. Anyone interested?

    • Me! by Neshomeh on 2009-11-02 22:32:00 UTC Link to this

... Maybe. I'm kinda terrified, actually. I probably won't finish, which is okay; I know it will be crap, but I can suck it up and deal with that; it's just that I know I'll be a terrible person for the whole month, because I'm always a a terrible person when I'm working on a project. o.o

Also, I forgot about the whole thing until today, so I have only shreds of an idea. It would be set in my world, and might involve any of a few sets of characters from said world. Lately I've been thinking a lot about my Powers That Be--two in particular who don't get along. The one, Alaric, has trapped the other, Leofric, in mortal form, doomed to an endless cycle of living, dying, and being reborn, all the time conscious of what he ought to be, but unable to get back. Leofric obviously wants to get back, but there are complications with the mechanics of it. I'm not sure exactly what they are, but I'll figure that out. Meanwhile, there are all sorts of other troubles surrounding the two of them, since Alaric is basically trying to rule the world as a god and Leofric goes around calling bullshit on him every chance he gets, no matter who gets hurt in the process. These guys are starting wars.

... That all makes a lot more sense now that I've written it out. That's a first. Usually things in my head get lost in translation. o.o

I don't know if I'll enter officially, but if I go through with the writing, I'll probably want to talk about it incessantly. Who's on AIM or MSN who wouldn't mind being a sounding board?

School is trying to kill me, once again. I don't have time to write a novel, so the only place it could come out of is homework and study time, which would do Bad Things to my GPA.

Best of luck to everyone who is participating, though.

Hrm... I wonder if my final project for 360 would count? It's probably going to be in the 50,000 word territory by the time it's done...

I shall make up for it by writing lots of itty bitty bits of fanfic. If I can come up with any ideas. Anyone else like Redwall, Discworld, and the webcomic Girl Genius (not in conjunction, though, that would be ... potentially very funny but nightmarish to write)?

        • I do, actually... by Techno-Dann on 2009-11-02 21:51:00 UTC Link to this

Redwall is an old favorite, Discworld is hilarious, and I follow Girl Genius on a per-update basis.

  • Is there something wrong with the PPC wiki? by Sedri on 2009-11-02 22:13:00 UTC Link to this

This main page, I mean: http://ppc.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page (or http://ppc.wikia.com/wiki/PPC_Wiki)

The first thing in it is: Darth Maul]]------------------------------------

followed by instructions on how to update, which is clearly meant for logged-in members, whereas the actual opening page is down below.

Maybe someone did this on purpose, but to me it seems wrong. I would think that editing instructions, if on the page at all, should be at the bottom.

    Or have I missed something?

  • Temeraire Minis by Dragonmage on 2009-11-07 07:46:00 UTC Link to this

Well, minis like the Izkierka on the book jacket of my copy of Empire of Ivory, or Islierka in a Temeraire fanfic on The Pit would clearly be the dragon. My question is what would a mini like Kayes, a misspelling of Keynes, the dragon surgeon, be? He's from the same fic as Islierka.

    • Why the dragon? by Huinesoron on 2009-11-07 08:44:00 UTC Link to this

The classic minis are canonical monsters which are the same for every mini. Based on that, I'd suggest make Temeraire minis the only "monster" I recall from any of the books -- the sea serpent in Throne of Jade. (Yes, I know Temeraire thought it was intelligent, but the fact remains that it's the only non-speaking draconic character in there).

1069 - When on 'Enterprise'-era Trekverse missions, I will not stash dead fish, salami, garlic or any kind of cheese in T'pol's quarters. Poor woman has enough to deal with without her super sense of smell being assaulted as well.

1070 - It is considered bad form to turn up to bandslash missions in 'Cheer Up Emo Kid' t-shirts. The fact that most bandslash features emo bands and angst is not an excuse. It is not ironic, it is just taking cheap pot-shots at people who are helpless to defend themselves.

1071 - I swore to protect canon characters against Suethors. Not against each other. Interrupting canonical battles is a no-no.

1072 - Nanites cannot cure embarrassing diseases. I should go to Medical before attempting any home cures for things I may have contracted on missions.

1073 - Cross-species male pregnancy is canonical in the Trekverse. I should therefore be very careful about any extended contact of any nature with alien species whether I am male or female.

1074 - Decapitation cannot be fixed with duct-tape. See 1072.

1075 - My partner is not my 'heterosexual life partner'.

1076 - Any attempt to steal and use the Pick of Destiny by musically-inclined Agents will result in immediate loss of privileges. Like unbroken fingers. HQ does not need a seven-foot-tall incarnation of Beelzebub ringing Response Centres in amplifiers and demanding demonic heavy-metal contests in order to regain his body parts. Apart from anything else, you won't win.

Welcome to the PPC! Here's a complementary set of daggers from the Raven Armory and a jug of bleepka. I wish we could take on canon Sues sometimes. However, it isn't allowed because it would sort of ruin the stories if most of the main characters were killed off. MSTing is allowed, though. (I was going to take on canon sues, too, in particular the ones on fiction press.)

I'd love to take on the really trashy stories. MSTing them isn't quite as much fun as killing them. Rogue assassins FTW!

I really dislike Mary Sues. I'm not sure it would be quite legal to try to kill the Twilight characters, though. I mean, we'd be bored to death before ever finishing the first six chapters of the book. (What I find is funny on original fiction websites, is that some of the writers take being told that they write like SMeyer as a compliment. XD )

In the example of Twilight, I would send somebody to give lessons about healthy relationships, stalking, whatever, somebody else to kill the Cullens and Bella, somebody else disguised as regular vampires to tell the other vampires what they should look like, etc.

It would definitely be more diplomatic. I can see some of the saner fans and antis accepting that plan, in a way. Not the fans who have "I love Edward Cullen" tattooed on their face, though. (Yet, a part of me just wants to drop an atomic bomb-or five-on the continuum and be done with it. :P)

Does Christian Weston Chandler/Sonichu really count as a canon sue in this case? I mean, the whole story is one big rant about how all women already have boyfriends and the mall cops wont let him stalk women. There really isn't much in the way of canon in the first place. You can find all of the sonichu "comics" as audiobooks on youtube if you havent already

          *shrugs*

I'm as much as a newbie here as you, but I think by the very fact that CWC created Sonichu makes him untouchable, unfortunately. See, what he does in his own comics is well within the limits of the canon. It's a canon he created.

Or maybe I'm crazy. I dunno.

The question is how to interpret
"publishing" and "canon." Are webcomics published? Are poorly done massively multiplayer crossovers canon? Does the fact that CWC claims his work is a parody (Which itself is an attempt to exploit a loophole) render sonichu noncanon? I'm definitely going to write a mission where I try to exploit loopholes like this

            • Definitions by Neshomeh on 2009-11-10 04:01:00 UTC Link to this

I'd say an original work intended and made available for viewing by a public audience is a published canon. I'd also say that parodies fall under that definition, since they operate with their own internal rules, separate from what they parody.

That said, we're the Protectors of the Plot Continuum, meaning that our aim is to preserve the various canons, not muck with them. If we don't happen to like them, we just leave them alone. If mucking with them is what you want to do, that's your business, but please don't do it under our name. That means no exploiting supposed loopholes to have a go at canons in PPC missions, whether you like the canons or not. Clear enough?

~Neshomeh, who would also like to point out that clearing up misconceptions like this is why we have the month-long probationary period.

fair enough, but what about my other idea of having to stop someone else from messing with the canon and creating an army of mary sues? I would have to make up a mary sue character because CWC doesn't have any actual fangirls, but would it be acceptable?

Umm, hey. The name's Unbridled, Unbi for short. After spending days without food or water in the wasteland that Munroe once compared to an eternal rickroll, Tvtropes, I stumbled across the PPC page.
I was intrigued, after being rehydrated by medical profssionals, by both the premise (Hunting down Sues and giving 'em what for? Sign me up!) and the characters you folks have put together. I found the world you folks have created to be rich, entertaining, and, above all, just zany enough to be fun.
As fandom goes, I'm pretty tight into Lord of the Rings, though I have slipped out of it a bit in recent years (I can't recite geneaologies, don't know Elvish, and The Silmarillion went riiight over my head), and continue my years-long love affair with the works of PTerry (Including his collab works, with a special place in my crusty little heart for Good Omens.) I'm also pretty familiar with Star Wars (not so much the EU), the MtG Multiverse, and the Dresden Files.
I have a deep seated hatred of Sues from a run-in a few years ago. (I tried to play the My Immortal drinking game. It did not end well.)
So. That's me. Looking forward to smearing badfics with you all.

    And I MWOTed again, didn't I? Darn.

Have a dose of paranoia: there is currently a virus that will close open instances of task manager and the command prompt that can apparently delete the registry entry for safe mode.

      *ceremonially pokes the newbie*

Hello! Welcome. LotR and PTerry, huh? It's... it's like the old days come back again. *gets teary-eyed* I too am a disciple of those great masters, as well as Neil Gaiman, whom I actually got to meet in person once (though when I say "meet" I actually mean "hear speak and then stand in line for hours to get books signed by").

I also dig sci-fi, but Farscape is my One True Fandom in that genre. I've seen Star Wars, of course, and some of each Star Trek series, and even some SG-1, but I could never forgive the latter for replacing Farscape when it went off the air, even when they hired on Farscape's two lead stars.

I keep telling myself I'm going to read the Dresden Files. Someday I will. At the moment I'm re-reading LotR as inspiration for NaNoWriMo.

Now, I have just one question: what is "to MWOT"?

I'm more into Atlantis, fandom-wise, although SG-1 is better.
I'm also taking on U2 because I've seen pretty bad stuff over there, and I'm a huge fan of the band. (seriously, Bono and Edge in a bondage fic?)

            • Sorry about that. by khajidu on 2009-11-09 20:32:00 UTC Link to this

A lot of RPF/RPS is like that. Not only U2. In fact, U2 fandom is rather mild. I've heard about RPS where more than two people had it on, or fics where people were raping each other. All very explicit. And I could go on and on...
I love U2, I love the (real) relationship between them, and I love the fact that they've been friends for more than 30 years. They're so cute together, especially Bono with his bandmates. And Edge is so totally Vulcan (and therefore awesome), too.
BTW, my Agents were originally tall ships (I'm very much into tall ships, even in the literal sense lol) and I'll see them (well, their real-world doppelgänger) at the Tall Ship Races in 2010, or so I hope (depends on my future job, and I don't even know which one I'll get, and when).

Just be aware that you need to be an active participant here at the Board for at least a month before you can apply for Permission to take on a PPC mission. Please read our wiki article on Permission for all the details.

In short, you can claim any mission you like, but you need to wait a month and get approval from a Permission Giver before you can write. It can be irritating, I know, but it protects the PPC itself.

Hiya. I'm Piph. I've been lurking here a few months now, and decided that it was high time to get into the weirdness.

I first encountered the PPC after reading the Official Fanfiction University of Redwall Christmas Special on the Pit. Curious, I went onto Google, searched, and found the wiki.

My fandoms of expertise would be Redwall, Artemis Fowl, and Harry Potter. I am familier with Lord of the Rings (familier-ish), Hetalia Axis Powers, Discworld(Again, familier-ish), One Piece, Naruto, Sailor Moon, Uglies, and... a bunch of other things.

  • Can somebody help with Elven names, please? by Cassie Cameron-Young on 2009-11-10 20:11:00 UTC Link to this

So, one of the LOTR missions I'm working on has a shedload of OCs, the nain ones being "an old archery tutor" named Fortarthin and four uncanonical elder brothers of Legolas - Isilihir, Raedian, Silithion and Huirlith. Isilihir is married, the fic informs us, and has at least two kids.

None of them are bad enough to kill, so I and my co-writer decided we're going to recruit them. However, this presents us with the problem of renaming them all (and my co-writer's not familiar with this particular topic). If anybody'd be willing to help out with this or offer suggestions, I'd be incredibly grateful.

You can contact me through cassie.dramateacher AT yahoo.co.uk or cassie.dramateacher AT googlemail.com. Thanks in advance. :D

    • Well... by Unbridled on 2009-11-10 20:19:00 UTC Link to this

There's some decent generators out there, then there's the option of combining the preexisting naming conventions.

I'm not too knowlegable about the Elvish language, so I'm afraid I can't be of too much help there.
