  • Morality-related question by PitViperOfDoom on 2009-08-21 07:29:00 UTC Link to this

Remember the Redwall badfic I reported not too long ago? Well, the author realized how bad it was and took it down. Would I make a bad sport of myself if I did a mission for it anyway?

    • Why not ask the author? by Vixenmage on 2009-08-21 23:21:00 UTC Link to this

I figure if they're taking it down because they realized how awful it was, it might amuse them to see it immortalized and lambasted. Or it might be horribly embarrassing. Either way, it makes the most sense to just ask.

      • I have to disagree there. by Sedri on 2009-08-22 00:37:00 UTC Link to this

If I realised my story was horrible and took it down for shame, I wouldn't take seeing it parodied very well. Maybe a few years later, with enough distance to laugh, but at this stage I'd just be hurt - even to be asked.

      • Seconded. by Neshomeh on 2009-08-21 23:51:00 UTC Link to this

Though I've never minded about PPCing a deleted fic, myself, asking is probably the most polite thing to do.

    • Re: Morality-related question by Pads on 2009-08-21 15:06:00 UTC Link to this

If it's been deleted, it presumably can't have any effect on the canon any more, so my instinct would be to leave it be.

Of course, if you'd published your mission of it and then it had been taken down, you could pat yourself on the back for a job well done, because your agents had clearly done such a good job the fic was totally removed from the multiverse.

    • Seconding Sedri. Nothing wrong with it, but I don't see the by kgarrett on 2009-08-21 14:59:00 UTC Link to this
      • point. I wouldn't say it's necessarily wrong, but in this case it might be better to leave it. Especially since there's the question of how you're gonna spork it if the fic's gone. :P Seriously though, it'd seem a bit pointless, and beyond the embarrassingly textbook nature of it there wasn't much to work with, with that Stu.
      • sproking a fic that's gone by IndeMaat on 2009-08-21 16:06:00 UTC Link to this

I always make a copy of the fic if I intend to do a mission. That way I don't have to go back to the fic every time I need a quote.

I usually don't do missions of deleted fic. Only twice so far, and in both cases I found out the fic was deleted after I had finished the mission. Other than that, there doesn't seem to be much point to do a mission for a deleted fic.

    • I think it's been done before... by Sedri on 2009-08-21 12:40:00 UTC Link to this

I faintly remember a mission in which the agents were endangered because the fic was being deleted - was that The Original Series? - but I think that ought to be the exception. Up to you, and no one would blame you for it, I think, but in your position, I'd leave it be.

I like this partnership. As someone said on the Journal, it looks as though they'll be unusually functional. Almost sane, even. It should be interesting.

And, of course, it is always good to see the bizarre effects of badfic cleaned up and made right again. And, well, one more future PPCer in the Nursery.

  • Paging Serenity Piper/Dawn'n'Dusk RE: Dusk Daybreak by Neshomeh on 2009-08-22 17:16:00 UTC Link to this

Some of us have been discussing the article for Dusk Daybreak on the wiki, hoping to get some questions answered. The article was created by a Serenity Piper, whose only other major contribution to the wiki is this image of Nyx Nightingale. The three of us in the discussion aren't sure who Serenity Piper is, or if she's responsible for Dusk Daybreak and her missions, or if she's just adding to the wiki. The missions are from the last couple of months, and I don't remember anybody posting about them on the Board. So, if anybody knows what's going on here, I at least would like to know.

    Thanks!

      Does that help?

      • That's the problem. by kgarrett on 2009-08-23 05:51:00 UTC Link to this

This is the first any of us have heard of her. At least those of us from the discussion on the wiki; we don't even know if she's active on the Board.

        • To elaborate... by Neshomeh on 2009-08-24 04:38:00 UTC Link to this

If nobody has any idea who the writer is, chances are she/he didn't bother getting Permission, which is sort of not okay. The point of Permission is to have a bit of quality control on what gets posted in the name of the PPC, and my personal feeling is that Dusk Daybreak's missions really needed someone to have raised an eyebrow and asked some questions about the Sueishness of the agents.

I'd like for more of the Board to at least have a look at the article on the wiki and the attached discussion, if not read over the missions themselves, so there can be some more discussion about the matter. For one thing, I'm not sure how to proceed with trying to bring the writer into a dialogue with us, because so far our comments on the wiki have gone unnoticed or ignored--not a good sign. I hesitate to comment on the missions themselves until I have a better idea of what you all think, so please speak your piece.

          ~Neshomeh

          • I still suggest commenting on Serenity's talk page. by kgarrett on 2009-08-25 05:43:00 UTC Link to this

You're notified when you get a message on your talk page, so I figure maybe that'll get their attention. Since they'll have "You have new messages" stuck on their screen until they check it out.

          • I think I had something to do with it... by tabbycat on 2009-08-24 05:30:00 UTC Link to this

I ran across these on the Pit the other day, and left some vaguely encouraging comments (probably too encouraging, in retrospect) suggesting she check out the Board. I think I also mentioned the wiki. The idea was to gently lead into 'hey, you need Permission to do this, and I'm pretty sure you don't have it' without seeming to be nasty about it (especially if it turned out that she did have it after all), and also to introduce her to a place where she could get some advice/concrit on her writing (which, as you have said, did need it rather badly).

At my first reading, it looked like she'd encountered The Original Series, but hadn't pursued things far enough to find out about the Board, wiki, Permission, etc., so I thought that it might be a good idea to introduce her to those things, since she was obviously keen. Primarily, though, I was just trying to find out if she was on the Board or not, so I could introduce her to the concept of Permission if necessary. I was expecting either to get a reply from the writer, or for her to introduce herself to the Board, rather than just posting stuff straight to the wiki.

In hindsight, though, I phrased things rather badly, which may have given her the wrong idea about the whole thing, and I probably should have linked her to the Permission page on the wiki as well. Apologies if I stuffed up. Anyway, if you want to start a dialogue, then she might respond to reviews on the story.

Btw, I also found these on the Pit: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3552696/1/PPC_An_Agents_Work_Is_Never_Done

This is the first I've heard of "Dawn" and "Dusk Daybreak", names that set off several alarm bells in my brain.

Dear me, this "Mirwen Sunrider" seems to be copying a few elements from TOS, like Jay's incessant habit of taking pictures of Rivendell. She also doesn't seem to know that it takes so much more than the average agent's Death Glare to intimidate the SO, not to mention the fact that kingsnakes are completely harmless and haven't the venom in them to make a fruit fly dizzy. *tsk tsk tsk*

      • no... by (name here) on 2009-08-23 16:37:00 UTC Link to this

It's meant to look like a dragon that is on fire.

Seems like it should be more metallic, though, since deathwing holds the title of the only dragon to fuse adimantium onto his skin.

What will make things interesting is the fact that one of the other four god-dragons is dead, another is probably busy in the dreamworld and may have turned evil, and yet another may currently have always been stuck fighting temporal anomalies possibly created by himself in the future.

That leaves one godlike dragon to fight deathwing, which is not percisely a fair matchup.

I understand the first part of that maxim--that's why I have a hard time finding fantasy I like--but I don't know where the second bit comes from. I've read/seen a lot of original sci-fi, and the unoriginal stuff doesn't generally remind me of Alien(s).

                • Personally, I don't get it... by thejadefalcon on 2009-08-25 11:16:00 UTC Link to this

Mithril shouldn't exist in any fandom without a place called Moria. It translates to 'Moria silver'. So why does Oblivion have mithril (which is nowhere near indestructable either)? Same goes for orcs. Weren't the orcs specific to LotR as well (not sure about this one)?

                  • Re: Personally, I don't get it... by Pads on 2009-08-25 12:01:00 UTC Link to this

According to wiki, Tolkien started the modern depiction of orcs, yes. The name apparently comes from an Old English word for "demon". Have a look: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orc

I thought orc was a word from Middle-Earth's languages. Very well, I suppose others can use it. But mithril is unacceptable and I can't understand why the Tolkien estate hasn't sued. Mithril should at least be under trademark.

how is the leveling system going to work? Basically they are killing all the low level areas and making them high level (bloody awsome, but still high level).

Guess they want the origional cities to be used more again. Plus flying mounts in Azeroth is going to be hell on the maps (we can just fly into the reagons that have been blocked off before...)

        Leto

        • A big answer by Barid on 2009-08-23 05:11:00 UTC Link to this

Some of the low level areas are still around. Also, some of the high level areas are being reworked into low level areas. Azshara is a good example of that. I also recall seeing something called Path of the Titans that I believe had something to do with leveling.

They are going to be reworking all of the maps. You will barely recognize the places that are still mostly unchanged by the geological upheaval. They have start over from scratch to incorporate the flying into Kalimdor and The Eastern Kingdoms.

    Hello!
I'm new around here but a long time PPC fan. Thought I'd give a wave and hang around a bit and finally join up proper in the fight against canon desecration. So far I’ve been fighting the good fight through the art of sporking over at Deletrius and Scifi Sues (a much smaller sporking community where myself and a friend can poke fun at sues defiling our favoured canons.) My most highly loved canon is the new Battlestar Galactica closely followed by Mass Effect and Stargate.

  • Badfics for Gathering reading? by Laburnum on 2009-08-25 14:17:00 UTC Link to this

Cassie suggested we bring badfics for a reading, a la the legolas by laura one. I thought we should ask which ones people think would be good.

I'm okay with pretty much anything as long as anything with strong bad language or sex scenes more detailed than the one in legolas by laura ("and then he raped her and then laura said 'go away you bastard'") won't end up on YouTube because my kid sister might see it, and then I would be in huge trouble. If everyone agrees not to put the squicky bits on YouTube, I'll bring the My Immortal drinking game from TVTropes. I think I'll also bring along the censored version of "Artemis' Lover" and "soulless shell" - they're from less well-known fandoms than Harry Potter, but they bear so little resemblance to their supposed canons that everyone will find them funny anyway.

    • If you wanted... by Huinesoron on 2009-08-27 20:42:00 UTC Link to this

... you could also try playing the PPC Card Game. I've revised the rules to a point where it may actually be a workable game.

(This is mostly because I'm not going to get a chance to play it any time soon, so I'd love for someone to playtest the thing. Don't worry, though, I'm not expecting you to)

I might see if I can find a suitable David Gonterman work. I've heard bad things about his writing. Apparently in one memorable Sailor Moon fic, his self-insert character shoots the throne of the supervillain Lord Zedd with a normal sawn-off shotgun. Which is on the moon. While "Davey" is on the Earth. And totally destroys it. And somehow manages to not hit Lord Zedd himself, who was sitting in the throne at the time.

Alan seems too obvious and strikes me as a boring name anyway; Tobias just wouldn't do, and James is right out. I considered Ranus, which was an actual name in my family, but the teasing would be too awful. I'll have to think hard about what Jenni would do.

She wears a mask too, you know that? And she is besmirching the sacred name of Tarja Turunen by calling herself "NightWish". And she sings ruins a song by Tatu, too. And her spelling and grammar are atrocious. And she's as much of a poseur as Ebony/Enoby Dark'Ness Dementia Raven/Tara Way. And she makes the Head stupid. And she performs several epic You Fail Biology Forevers. And she refers to sex as "you-know-what". And she turns V into an idiot, a wimp, a Cockney, and the muffin man, in that order. I could go on.

I suppose as long as the character never found out what was in it, it might not kill them. It just goes against the grain to me because of the principles of Despatch, which I think was contemporary with the original series.

  • SAS Codewords by thejadefalcon on 2009-08-26 16:45:00 UTC Link to this

I’ve been replaying Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, followed by rewatching Ultimate Force and now going straight into a short oneshot about neither fandom but still featuring the SAS. A couple of questions though.

First of all, there seems to be a bit of a discrepancy in one codeword. CoD 4 uses ‘tango’ for the bad guys (i.e. Tango down, room One-Echo). However, UF and the NCOs back when I was in my school’s CCF use ‘X-ray’ (i.e. X-ray down, rear stairwell). Which is it? I’ve got a theory that Tango is an Americanism that CoD 4 fell into, but I want to know for sure. I personally think X-ray sounds more awesome, but the SAS don’t care about being cool, just about getting in, getting the job down, getting out.

Secondly, does anyone know what OP or FAP means? I can’t think of a context for the former, but Dempsey from UF says “FAPs please, gentlemen,” just as they head off to go and shoot people.

    • I've never played the game but... by Cinnia Aine on 2009-08-28 05:10:00 UTC Link to this

I think I know what they might be hinting at, in a way, by the words "tango", "echo", and "x-ray". (As it is, I'm not sure my insight will be all that helpful.)
This may sound really stupid, but I'm positive that those code words are all taken from the military alphabet. Which, (partly because of the part the military plays in my relative's lives, partly because it's an interesting subject, and partly because memorizing the alphabet was fun), I decided to do a brief study on.
First, here's a handy link to the wikipedia page on it:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_alphabet
Anyway, the NATO alphabet is used in the military so that code words assigned to different letters of the alphabet don't get mixed up over telephone or radio communication. (e.g. "B" and "D" sort of sound alike.) I don't know what the code words are, but I'm guessing they aren't the same for every mission. So, yeah. That's my thoughts on the subject.

      • Thanks... by thejadefalcon on 2009-08-28 13:07:00 UTC Link to this

I knew it was the phonetic alphabet (it was pretty much a requirement to learn in the CCF), but it was the usage I was confused about. Thanks for the help regardless.

It would be kind of hilarious to go dimension hopping looking for sues about to be rescued by canon characters from dangerous situations, and then distracting the canon characters so that they don't arrive just in the nick of time.

Such a thing would be a grossly irresponsible use of dimensional travel technology, of course, and it would be wrong to be caught doing it.

    • That could be an interesting assassination method. by Anonymous on 2009-08-27 00:20:00 UTC Link to this

No guarantee it'd work, though; Sues tend to twist the Word World in their favour much like the canon protects Agents, so the Sue might just be saved by a deus ex machina instead of the canons.

      • Sues by Caestus on 2009-08-29 14:34:00 UTC Link to this

It probably wouldn't work. Even if you stopped them from being rescued, they are still sues. Sexually attractive out of character canons will probably keep coming out of the woodwork to save the day until the sue meets his/her true wuv.

  • When Agents whom no existing canon can accommodate retireÂ… by Tawaki on 2009-08-27 18:46:00 UTC Link to this

    …how are they accommodated?

My idea was the crafting of a special universe, with a world described and enough locals to prevent inbreeding, but no plot for the Agents' DNA and abilities to screw up. And a whole group of Agents is retiring. If that setup won't work, what will instead?

    • That just screams "bad idea". by kgarrett on 2009-08-27 19:03:00 UTC Link to this

No Agent is well-enough liked or impossible enough to accomodate that the Flowers would create an entire universe for them. That brings me to my second point; the Flowers might have advanced technology, but that's something they just can't do. If they could, I get the feeling they would've done it before, but for themselves, not Agents. My opinion/idea is that the Flowers would pick 'verses most able to accomodate the Agents, and if there are several there might be a choice involved (like Acacia deciding to retire to Rome). For example, if Tawaki's one of the ones you're retiring they'd probably let him retire to Doctor Who. If they find nothing, which I doubt since we're talking an infinitely huge multiverse, they just wouldn't allow the Agents to retire yet.

      • Re: That just screams "bad idea". by Pads on 2009-08-27 22:02:00 UTC Link to this

        ...KG, are you channelling me?

Retiring isn't something agents generally do. I can't see the Flowers or whoever setting up an entire world in which your agents can retire. I can see them okaying a world in which they can retire, but that's about it.

…that ex-Agents can stay out of the canon's way, right?

And can it accommodate odd somatotypes as long as the people with said somatotypes don't interfere with the stories? Because some Agents are more disturbed than others and may require help from said others.

        • There's always Genericverse. by Neshomeh on 2009-08-27 19:30:00 UTC Link to this

Generic Fantasy, Generic Sci-fi, etc. Or an Alternate Universe. Nexis universes are good, too. They pop up mainly in role-plays.

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by "old somatotypes"? A somatotype is just someone's physique, as I understand it: ectomorph, endomorph, or mesomorph.

I meant near-human but with odd features.

And Generic Science Fantasy would work best, I think.

            • There's also precedent for Agents in "original" 'verses. by kgarrett on 2009-08-27 19:51:00 UTC Link to this

I don't think the Flowers have discovered every 'verse there is. For example, Blue Photon, the Telyans, and Tango Dioxide (I might've missed a couple) were all from the same original 'verse, and never did manage to actually find it. If they found one more sci-fi oriented for the Agents, they could put them there. An original universe without published works, but where the Agents' presence wouldn't damage anything (maybe with some help from Disguise Generators). I think your best bet is that or Doctor Who.

              • My suggestion would be one of the RPG-verses. by Bailey Matutine on 2009-08-31 18:27:00 UTC Link to this

Pick a system with a wide enough cosmology and a fluid enough campaign world, and you just kinda get lost in the mix of PCs wandering about.

I know that it isn't the Board, because there's a post which has replies taking up the greater part of the webpage, and I would have noticed if something like that was on the board. On the other hand, exept for that (and all the other people asking 'where are we') it looks exactly like the board, and I'm getting this uncanny valley vibe. I got here from the Wiki, but it's being so vauge I have no idea what's going on.

      So...help with this, please?

    • Yeah, that got pretty bad. by kgarrett on 2009-08-30 22:52:00 UTC Link to this

I'm half-wondering if this is going to happen every August. The idea of switching to a more controllable forum now that Oddlots seems to be down for good, maybe with a post on the Board explaining where we went, could do nicely, I guess. The alternative is using this one as our main Board, since it never seems to get hit by spammers.

      • Hmm. by Vixenmage on 2010-08-31 19:06:00 UTC Link to this

I think the reason this Board doesn't get hit by spammers is because we don't use it that frequently. There's no point-- from a bot's perspective (I think...), or a troll's-- in spamming a forum where nobody's around. The activity on the 'Board is generally pretty high, so spamming is more likely. If we switched to this link, we'd probably start getting hit here, too.

Also, the link is harder to remember.

I rather like this one, though it does remind me of a point that I don't recall ever being adressed. Doesn't voyager have the macrovirus cure as of the end of the first and possibly only cannonical appearance of the macrovirus? If so, why did it take so long to create and deploy it?

      • As I understand it-- by Neshomeh on 2009-09-04 03:22:00 UTC Link to this

--And here I have to point out that I've never seen the Star Trek episodes in question myself--but I believe the reason was that the PPC's Medical Department was simply too swamped with casualties, and with actually fighting off the viruses, to synthesize the cure. As soon as the big bugs were killed off, they were free to get on with it. You'd have to ask Tawaki to be sure, though.

Personally, I suspect it's a side effect of Real World time leeching into HQ, where it doesn't really have any business being. Comes of keeping a Door open to New Caledonia and mucking about with TARDISes and such.

I'm glad you liked my story, anyway. {= )

Of course, I had a teensy sneak-peek, hahaha. I found the second part as a whole particularly interesting, especially the process of Derik going through the reality room. I really like how it rationalised his scars and such.

Anyway, I'm glad I have a character squirrelled away in FicPsych. I think, like I said when I had a look, that you did him perfect justice and took good care of him. No *permament* damage was done anyway ;).

BUT YEAH. It was a really interesting take on things, and it was nice to see kind of alternative war stories to the 'main' events of each crisis. Shows that even though the invasion and epidemic have been and gone, there's still room for more writing to be done about them.

Lovely, all of it! A great morning read. I like... well, all of it, especially the overall cohesion, as well as some littler things, my absurdness insists that I randomly mention a few: Luke going out to play hero, for instance - very typical. Now I'm getting mental images of Legolas going with him, armed with bow and arrow and totally unable to communicate with his partner...

      Exclaimation-Mark TARDIS! How fitting :D

Also, I really like how you've written the inclusion of the Duty Song, as well as the Reality Room, and how it affected E'rik/Derik. I wonder if I should shove Iza in there... ;)

      • said it before but by Pads on 2009-09-01 02:43:00 UTC Link to this

I have to second the love of the way the Reality Room was handled. You noticed, Neshomeh, I'm sure, that I had very little beta-y comments to make in that section? 's 'cause I couldn't find anything much to quibble over that managed to make itself heard over the general feeling of being masterfully pulled in to a really excellent and well thought out bit of narrative. In fact, anyone reading this who hasn't read the fic, consider this a plug - it's worth it for that bit if nothing else.

Sedri - I also considered what would happen if Iza was shoved in there. While the results would be interesting, I'm not sure they'd help Trojie and I to write her, so maybe we'll avoid it for now, but it was an interesting mental exercise nonetheless. Especially when I started considering the effects of the room on every other agent we write. And then Marsha.

        • Wow. by Neshomeh on 2009-09-01 17:59:00 UTC Link to this

I'm going to have to go over that bit to figure out what I did right. ^^; I like getting inside people's heads, but I'm guessing that's not what makes it work. I did know it was going to happen from the beginning, and what it was going to do to him. I couldn't leave him 'Sued. {= P

As for putting other agents in there, I agree it's probably not the best idea, but many of them would probably escape relatively unscathed. It's the ones from defined canons who would have to worry the most.

Sues, of course, are in danger of their very lives in that room because of bad description. *g* Incidentally, I knew that Derik was going to end up with a sledgehammer by the end of the story, but I didn't know about the Sue turning into one until I got there.

          So glad you liked. ^

        • It's probably a good idea... by Sedri on 2009-09-01 07:14:00 UTC Link to this

...not to test that theory. Most Agents should avoid that room, I think - not just the ones born in badfics, but also those who've been through experiences that they otherwise wouldn't have survived. The results could get... messy.

          • If Derik's any indication... by kgarrett on 2009-09-01 09:46:00 UTC Link to this

The room probably would've just rationalised how they managed to survive it, working with what's known of the 'verse and events. So it might not be too messy, but it depends on the Agent and such.
