Wanted Pages on the Wiki; HALP! by
on 2008-12-01 23:33:00 UTC
Link to this
Hey guys
Everyone may or not have noticed that over the past few days the Wiki has been getting some of its wanted pages filled in and that the appearance of the place has been getting jazzed up a bit.
But we still have over 350 Wanted Pages - people want to know about Agents, Canons, Continuua, Terminology ... and the regular Wiki editors, stalwart though that crew are, can't fill them all in; some things we just don't know or aren't experts in.
So, here's the plea; if every Boarder goes to the Wiki Wanted Pages list; http://ppc.wikia.com/wiki/Special:WantedPages and makes ONE page a day for a week, we could knock this on the head for a while. Even if you can only make a short article, that'd be a huge help :)
Come on dudes, show off your nerdiness! -
Um. by

Link to this
First up, sorry about that. I should've asked about it first. I just… find it a little odd, with that number.
I had a couple of questions. Um. What would be the most appropriate way to deal with the longer series of video games? Legend of Zelda can probably get away with one article, but I'm a little less certain about the Final Fantasy series (for one thing, aside from the numbered, there's the Compilation, the various Tactics games, and I don't know much about XI aside from it being a MMORPG). And then there's the Tyler-who's-not-in-MTFFAT-or-Reynolds. I was thinking, would his (current) species designation be all right? -
Made the Transformers entry...random related question... by
on 2008-12-03 01:49:00 UTC
Link to this
Okay, so, this has been bothering me for a bit now, and since I just filled out the Transformers entry on the wiki, I'm going to maybe-not-so-randomly ask this question here...
Would minis in the Transformers-verse(s) be, well, mini-Transformers? I've been thinking that they could just be, like, the toys, or something. Only alive. Cuz that way they can still transform, which is kinda the point. And I don't think there's any nasty animals indigenous to the Transformers-verse(s) that could be used. Not to mention that they're ROBOTS, and I think they should stay that way...
The only problem with having mini-Transformers would be that, well, not all characters are giant robots, and I'm not sure what misspelled human characters would be. I'm thinking mini-hardhats, since it seems to be something of a recurring theme. http://transformers.wikia.com/wiki/Hard_hat
So, would it be too much to have two mini species for one continuum? Or slew of continuums? I've collected a number of the little buggers, and I'd kinda like to know what I'm dealing with here...
~Anjilly, who has a penchant for 80s cartoons, and who is also feeling slightly frazzled at the moment and thus apologizes for any flightiness inherent in this post. Like the way she just signed it. XD -
Er, two points. by
on 2008-12-03 13:56:00 UTC
Link to this
1) Not many characters in Lord of the Rings are giant flaming demons, either. Doesn't stop them. :P Minis aren't supposed to be particularly similar in type to their canon character, I don't think.
2) You say there's no nasty animals, and okay, maybe not. But minis in general are minor canonical monsters, not a generic class which makes up most of the cast. I don't know Transformers, but is there a small group somewhere which you can make the model for the minis? Or a minor series with a distinct visual type? I don't know, obviously, but.

...So I'm not very familiar with anything beyond the most popular of the many, many, MANY Transformers-related continua. And I'm still getting acquainted with the ones that I AM familiar with. So while I could probably pull something out of the Japanese comics or one of their minor spinoffs, I haven't really gotten that far into the fandom yet...
At the same time, I just realized that the TF wiki does indeed have a (short) list of animal species. *headdesk* I'm gonna go investigate it and see if there's anything nasty and dangerous enough to be a mini... Oh, who am I kidding, of course there will be. It's an adventure series aimed at ten-year-old boys, for goodness' sake. XD

Can OFUs bring students back from the dead? by
on 2008-12-01 23:59:00 UTC
Link to this
I think I remember seeing the resurrection of students as a throwaway gag in the sequel to OFUM, but I don't know if that applies to other OFUs. Does it depend on whether the canon can bring people back from the dead? Would it be possible because, in OFUR, the students are not in their original bodies, so we can just put them in a new one if their current fursona form gets destroyed?
-
We had a lot of trouble with that one. by
on 2008-12-02 03:23:00 UTC
Link to this
Because one of the main themes of TRC is not bringing back the dead. One guy tried and apparently nearly ripped Time and Space itself apart. We're mainly avoiding the issue but I think in other worlds, if there's a canonical afterlife and such, the Headmaster's intervention should be enough to bring them back.
-
I'd be inclined to say... by

If the universe has a canonical afterlife, it's probably possible, especially with the Headmaster's intervention.

So I think we could do it.
Maybe during the Designated Yearly Emergency, whatever it is they use to bring the students back stops working for some reason? That way we can keep some drama in it - I realise OFUs are supposed to be funny, but I think SOME tension when we get to actual plot would be nice. -

So, after a month or two of real life semi-hell, getting used to my new school, and another month of NaNoWriMo insanity, I'm back.
So, that leads me to my question; I wasn't incredibly active, but I did hang around here and post for over a month before I disappeared. Can I ask for Permission now, or do you not remember me? -
Hello! by

I do remember seeing you around for quite a while, which means you can't have been gone that long, as I only joined sevenish months ago. (Already? O.o)
Anyways. I'd suggest hanging around for just a little while and letting everyone get used to having you back before you ask. I don't think a whole month should be necessary, though, unless the PGs really insist. (Speaking of which, I wonder when the next elections are. :P)
Sorry, I ramble. Welcome back! -

Well, I was assuming there'd be some, but... by

it seems I got mixed up.
I've only been present for one round of Permission Giver elections, but as far as I know, the procedure is as follows:
-One of the current PGs announces that elections are taking place in a post on the Board.
-People post replies voting for whom they think would make the best PG/PGs.
-When enthusiasm dies down or the thread gets shunted off the Board, the votes are counted and the people with the most votes are then named official PGs.
But like I said, I just assumed. -
Basically. by
on 2008-12-03 13:50:00 UTC

Generally we first ask for nominations as to who should be put forward, then hold an actual vote. But we only do this when the number of PGs on-Board gets critically know, which it hasn't yet. There's still three or four of us around, I'm pretty sure.

Does Anyone Remember Me? by
on 2008-12-02 06:32:00 UTC
Link to this
I've officially changed my capitalization since last time I was here. Also I'm now more into knitting than fandom. (Although my first knitting internet friend was an old PPC friend . . .)
But that's not the point of this post! While I'm probably not coming back in any real sense of the word, I do have a 7-to-10-page paper of original research for a linguistics class that's due insanely soon. And I thought I might do something about the jargons of internet communities. And then I remembered how rich a jargon the PPC has. So I'm thinking development of the PPC's vocabulary? I know, I know, the posts disappear off the bottom of the page, so it's hard to go back.
I did find you guys's wiki, and have been poking around there, but what I think I want to do is use the PPC as a specific case of the interaction of canon, general internet, general fandom, and community-specific vocabularies. So if anyone with a lot of time and/or links on their hands wants to point me to (say) that archive of the board somebody tried to do once, general fandom resources, or whatever, that would be super awesome. You guys rock my socks!
P.S. This is totally going to be one of those essays that is not, shall I say, 100% quality controlled. So whatever you got, I want! -

And that is doing interviews!
So, since I really have no idea what direction this paper is going to go in, just some general stuff for now:
For the oldbies: What are your memories of PPC vocabulary? Do you remember specific vocabulary creation events? Do you have something else awesome to say?
For the newbies: Do you find PPC conversations confusing? How do you cope with new terminology?
For everybody: How does the PPC compare to other internet communities you're a part of? Do you think you'd be friends with fellow PPC'ers in real life? Do you know people like your fellow PPC'ers in real life?
It would be super awesome if you all responded to as many or as few of these as you felt like. a/s/l-type information, fandom history, PPC history, etc are also other options that would make my data collection even better. But all are totally optional.
Also if anyone wants to do this via e-mail, AIM, Skype, or gchat, that's totally fine with me. undeadgoat at gmail, deadgoatgirl, undeadgoat, undeadgoat at gmail, respectively.
P.S. This paper is due Thursday . . . Why didn't I have this idea a week ago? This is so cool! -

I think I'm a middlebie, so I'll answer the generic questions.
How does the PPC compare to other internet communities you're a part of?
Well, everyone here is friendly and insane. And they won't stare at me when I start talking about sporks and Bleeprin...because we all know what they are. It's awesome. :]
Do you think you'd be friends with fellow PPC'ers in real life?
Totally. Because then we can chat in RL (real life)and online.
Do you know people like your fellow PPC'ers in real life?
Well, actually most people know me in RL because I write, draw, and act insane. But I've never found anyone as Canon-obsessed as I am in my personal RL bubble. :[
I think some of the most common PPC "jargon" are stuff like "glods", "Glaurung", "Upstairs", "Bleeprin", and stuff like that. -

Funny; I did something like this a few months go for my own university essay. I'm glad to be able to help someone in return!
Female, twenty-one, living in New Zealand. I've been here over a year but I don't think I yet count as an oldbie, so I'll just take the generic questions:
How does the PPC compare to other internet communities you're a part of?
Busier, and much more fun. Very lively. Many other communities, especially those that center around a particulr fandom, tend to fade out as people lose interest in that particular story. The PPC covers all stories, so when my favourite fandom changes, I can just write missions for the new one. :)
Do you think you'd be friends with fellow PPC'ers in real life?
I would say that I am friends with other PPCrs in Real Life, because even though we've never met face-to-face, I've spent time with Trojie and Pads and Ciri and July and... well, I won't bother to list them all. But I call them friends. We chat about a variety of subjects, sometimes very serious, lean on each other when upset and just... be friends. It's lovely.
If you have more specific questions later, I'll be glad to asnwer them.
Cheers!

OT: Limiting Godly Powers by
on 2008-12-02 15:52:00 UTC
Link to this
Within my crossover, which many have probably heard me tlaking about at one point or another, eighteen individuals are granted powers that place them over many gods, but underneath the Universal Gods who created and control the Universe. Each of them, in addition to their mortal weaknesses and strengths, has absolute control over one element, and in the case of three of them, one element and the ability to warp the fabric of time and space.
My question is this: How do I make them seem powerful enough without it looking too overboard? An example would be one of them who can control energy (Think lasers, Harry Potter spells, etc) being capable of blocking the laser beam from the Second Death Star with her powers.
It just has me slightly confused, about how to impress it on the readers, but not overdo it. The scenario mentioned above, and like scenarios, would rarely happen, if at all, but still... -
Make them cripplingly limited. by
on 2008-12-03 13:32:00 UTC
Link to this
And not realise it.
For instance, make the powers limited /strictly/ and /entirely/ to their element. So if you've decided (say) liquid water is an element, great -- but heaven help the person if it's salt water, or heavy water, or frozen water. Similarly, you can tweak that energy control one. Specify types of energy, for instance -- ground it in physics, not vague concepts of energy. So, say, one has control over light energy -- which, on Star Wars lasers (which I understand are actually not laser-based, especially not the big ones, they're gaseous) it would have the effect of making the light deflect while the gas or whatever carries merrily on its way. Then, sure she can control light in every way -- but all that means is she can a) turn things invisible, b) blind people, c) make illusions, or d) make and manipulate lasers (real ones). The degree to which she can do this depends on her degree of skill.
Which is the other way to do it. Give them great powers, but no finesse. So she can divert that superlaser, but can't control /where/ she redirects it, because her thoughts are simply "divert" rather than "divert by 75 degrees towards galactic north" or wherever.
So. Very specific and rather picky limits, or great power and no skill. Those're my suggestions.
hS -
I'm thinking of a mix of these two. by
on 2008-12-03 16:26:00 UTC
Link to this
They are each limited to a specific element, for example, the guy who controls water can do rain, fog, create lakes, etc, but he can't control ice, with limited control over steam. They are capable of pooling their abilities (Water guy and lightning guy combine powers to create thunder storms) but that's the limit.
The girl who controls energy specifically controls 'Aether', which I've translated to mean magic mostly, with limited control over energy, as magic and energy are similar. Without her weapon, which is specifically designed by the Gods no less, she wouldn't stand a chance against the laser until years after she gained her powers. While they are given basic instructions on what they can and can't do with their powers, more powerful abilities must be developed by them alone, sorta reminscent of what would happen in an RP game.
While this sounds like it was set in stone, that was actually me musing to myself and turning musing into fan-canon. Thanks hS, that helped a lot! -
A couple ideas... by
on 2008-12-03 08:16:00 UTC
Link to this
First off, make the bad guys powerful and smart enough to make such incredible powers necessary to defeat them.
Secondly, make the good guys lose at least once. Show that the bad guys are sneaky enough to work around their powers and beat them.
Third, have situations that incredible powers can't solve. Being able to deflect superlasers is quite the power, sure, but it won't cure a broken heart or end a drought.
Most important, to my way of thinking, is that the universe needs to be balanced. These eighteen heroes have been given massive powers for a reason - there has to be something that requires at least that much power to overcome. -
Very good points. by
on 2008-12-03 16:20:00 UTC
Link to this
While the Heroes of the story don't face many people on equal level with them when they are at full power, I have included ways that each of the 18 people can be weakened, reducing their power to half, or even a quarter, of what it should be. And since all the Chosen are humans, there are their normal weaknesses which can be taken advantage of.
The good guys lose quite frequently, now that I think of it. A large part of the story is dedicated to the efforts of Maleficent, controller of the Heartless, the bad guys, and her efforts to break up the group and control them, something she actually succeeds at.
And yes, these have also been included, things that can't be overcome. They can fix droughts, but they can't fix / manipulate death, emotions and, for the most part, free will. And to a certain extent, they can't even control their powers. On confrontation with Dementors in the Harry Potter world, their powers work automatically, regardless of the person's choice.
And the balance is something I've been trying to figure out for a while too. The basic idea was to simply do the pair off thing, one evil guy for each good guy, but it felt too cliche. Their powers themselves weren't actually given to stop evil and dark powers, but rather to prevent the Universe returning to Nothing. Each of the 18 can be used as a Key to the Door to the Light, aka, Kingdom hearts, which acts as the Reset Button for the Universe, restoring areas which have been lost to the nothingness, and bringing back the people lost to the Nothingness as well. The 18 stand to represent Creation, to go against Nothing.
If it feels like I shot down each of your ideas, I hope I didn't. This actually really helped me realise how much planning I've put into it, which seems to be a lot more thorough than I thought. And you've really helped me define the limits too. Thanks Techno! -
Very interesting. by
on 2008-12-03 08:07:00 UTC

Here's a few ideas...
For one, you can have them doing things with their element that would have lesser elementals or wizards or mages or whatever in fits, and doing them easily, without thinking. Sorry, that's a little confusing; what I'm getting at is that there's two ways of demonstrating the absolute control: through raw power, and through finesse. Finesse might be an easier way to do it. It helps if you have one of these lesser ones around to compare, or someone who's familiar with the lesser ones.
Another possibility is to show them keeping up (even if barely) with one of the gods, or a creature that is, in its home world, super-powerful. I'm thinking Chernabog (sp?) from KH for some reason, dunno why.
Hmm... yeah, I'm better at giving people awesome powers and making them half-useless. =P Hope I've helped at least a little.
It occurs to me that I never did finish going through the chapters I have. If you still want me to, I can finish probably tomorrow... Sorry about that! It completely slipped my mind. -
(Tamora Pierce fans, take a gander in here) by
on 2008-12-03 16:09:00 UTC
Link to this
The lesser wizards / mages in fits will actually happen. Since it is a crossover, it includes the world of Emelan, found in Tamora Pierce's 'Circle of Magic' series. Magical rules in that world specifically state that messing with nature will rebound upon the user eventually, often killing them in the process.
In the world of Emelan, there is a woman called Sandrilene fa Toren, who, as well as being one of these 18 people, has the power to manipulate magic with her own, natural power. In the end, she combines the main 10 people that the story centres around, giving them the powers and abilities of the others. The sheer level of power they now wield essentially corrupts them, and they begin acting like vengeful gods, reworking the face of the planet to suit their personality, and dividing the world into territories. The things that the 10 do before they are combined are enough to make the average mage on that world twitch, but what happens afterwards would be nothing short of a miracle, even though the 10 become corrupted and ignore the reason why they have these powers in the first place.
And that is a good possibility. I'll take a think about that.
And I usually follow that pattern too, giving people awesome powers and making them useless. I sorta came to the realisation that these are epically powerful people, so stupid sorta has to be removed from the equation.
And that would be great Makari. I hadn't even remembered about those until you mentioned them. Like I said before, feel free to go through and do them whenever you'd like. -
My personal favourite way... by
on 2008-12-03 07:21:00 UTC

Breaking the fourth wall. This being done by a story of the character:s predesesors (if they have any) abusing the powers and basically showing the full extent of them.
But this is an over used way of doing it. But it does get the point across.
Or you could go Shakesphere and do a monologue, that would be interesting!
Leto, giving bad advice! -
No, it isn't bad advice! by
on 2008-12-03 16:30:00 UTC

I've actually been contemplating something like this, I just dunno what others would think. At one stage, one of the characters is sent into a future to see how things 'could' turn out. That's only an idea though, it's been bouncing through my mind for a while now.
The other wya would be through the member of the team who is omniscient. She's directly limited by the Gods to only reveal information that is desperately needed at the time, but since she knows everything, she could easily break the 4th wall.
Hmm, thanks for the ideas Leto. I'll set them free into my mind and let them bounce around. *Ponders*

Fic is a common noun anyway; it were never proper, 'cause it ent real English, so dinnae fash yersen. But if your subconscious is asking Trojie to britpick, give it a kick from me, 'cause I've spent years britpicking her brain.

Unfortunately, I'm biased against Garth Nix's books, my former housemate having raved altogether too much about Sabriel.
If the best your subconscious can come up with is bitches about capitalisation, your agents may benefit from some time in the DBS. Over here, bad English is the least of our worries.
Also, I am taking this moment to officially say unto Trojie, "No. We are not going into Abhorsen fics. Not unless you want to spark a three-days-long rant about the Smurf every time you try to make me write a single line." -

I can understand the bias. I'm currently committing something similar against Stephenie Meyer's books, as everyone and their dog is attempting to get me to read the rest of the Twilight series. >.
*eyes DBS dubiously* It's an idea. Especially as there are some rather atrocious bad slash fics in some of my favorite fandoms. I'm still weighing the trauma versus the entertainment and satisfaction output, though. -

As Trojie said, the Smurf is my ex-housemate. First name starts with S and surname's Murphy, hence the nickname. Most definitely not my favourite person.
I'm resisting Twilight too. I suspect I'll be forced to read it eventually though, by the friend who made me read a Laurell K Hamilton just so she had someone to snark about it with. Now that's what I call traumatising.
You could always ease yourself in gently with the DBS. There seems to be two types of badslash: hideously OOC anf fluffy or wangsty; or extremely graphic and featuring rape. Start with the first kind, they're a lot easier. The second kind will break your brain. -

Yes, that's the problem with really esoteric fandoms that are only known to people of a philological or medieval bent. There's not a great deal of fantards about. Yup, I've had 'em. The only one I can remember right now is the one where hS came to America for a visit and stayed in the basement of my old house, where I was still living for some reason. It was a little strange, to be honest. I think we watched the Wonderworks production of "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe." And there was something about my set of Prismacolor pencils, but I don't remember.

Long answer: the inability to capitalise, the blatant Sue, the lack of punctuation, the constant bold text and the severe OOCness provide more than enough charges just in the bit of the first chapter I read.

Meh, I have one reserved.
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4505478/1/Kyle_091
Stu the Spartan, aka Kyle-091, is a self-insert who miraculously saves half a dozen canon characters from dying, warps the plot out of recognition, steals most of the memorable lines from their owners, and gets a fraking Spartan pregnant. Of course, he had to pick Kelly. Adding to the fun, the author seems to have a broken caps lock key and can't even plagiarize the book properly.
It's the little things that really tick me off, though. For example, the meaning of the middle finger has apparently been forgotten in "the general"'s warped little Haloverse, despite CANON evidence to the contrary. Did I mention he survives after the Gravemind's been trying to infect him for an hour?
The good general's even spawned two more Kyle fics.... -

Kill it Ugolino, once you have Permission, with much pain. I've only played the first game and have yet to read Contact Harvest, but two chapters of that drivel alone are enough to tell that you have a first grade Marty Stu there.
Holy shit, I just read a bit further. They make him a Spartan? What happened to the whole kidnapping at age six, physical, mental and intellectual training until age fourteen and even then there's less than fifty percent chance of surviving the augmentation procedure part of the SPARTAN process? The author's obviously read the books, he knows this, why does he still do it? -

Surviving without any armour whatsoever despite getting into firefights. Elites and Hunters have better aim than that, and even a grazing hit would be severe due to her completely unarmoured state.
Disobeying orders from a superior officer and getting away with it.
Suevian attitude.

Aranox doesn't seem to be an actual Haloverse planet. I'd suggest glassing it while yelling out the charge list into a giant speaker.
Oh, and http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4673294/1/Twin_Spartans
The UnCanon, it burns... 14-year-old twins who become Spartans. The worst part? They're apparently born with the qualities of the Spartans. Yes, that's right. They have the exact same augmentations through natural means. Blatant Stuism, and absolutely horrible biology. Do me a favor and poke around until you find the coordinates for the Cut Content, then feed 'em to the Flood Juggernaut.
Another one: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4444991/1/Dream_Catcher
Horrible grammar. The Elite in the first chapter (which was uploaded twice, by the way) says “c'mon dun be like dat". Yes, that was a copypasted quote. Extra Spartan Mary-Sue, as there was no Maya-101 in canon. The author names the Arbiter Lazaro. Stupid, because she made an effort to make her own profile name sound like valid Sangheili. Oh, and he's completely OOC. You could drop her off the tallest point in High Charity, that would be fun... -

Good idea. Adding to the irony, I plan to recruit the bit Elite who rescues Kyle, as well as the rest of his crew. Their CCS cruiser could do the job. Hmm...wonder if I can pull off a "your sues shall burn until they are naught but glass" speech...
Juggernaught seems good, although it's a bit quick for that..heresy.
As for the High Charity, they'd probably survive due to a combination of gel layers, Elite resistance to fall damage, and Suevian ability. Now, if we were to attach them to the Forerunner Key Ship's engines... -

Death by Keyship sounds fun, and the pre-glassing speech sounds like it would make a great addition. For the twins, maybe they could be knocked out and thrown to the Keelbugs? (Cut content; a Covenant race that floats around cutting corpses into pieces and taking them away for disposal) That, or the Covenant Stalkers (Also cut content; they sneak up to enemies and shred them, and look a bit like Zerglings. The idea behind them was moved to the much weaker and less aggressive Pure Flood Stalker Form.)
I was considering tying them to Regret's ship during the New Mombasa Slipspace jump, but there is a high chance of them disappearing through a plothole - Slipspace can make people inexplicably disappear. -

Yeah, but I was thinking about a more...canon disposal method. Sues would probably act like the crystal from First Strike: they'd screw the Slipspace up badly enough to distort canon events. Besides, if you don't see the body...

Now I'm out of interesting-sounding established-canon Haloverse kills, besides NOVA bomb and very, very large amounts of needler spikes. There just aren't enough good non-Flood monsters in the Halo continuum; the deadliest ones, like the Stalker and the Drinol, were cut. Scarab gun is too fast for a killing... Maybe they could eat Grunt food until they died? That stuff is positively foul. That, or the needlers.

I have only recently been introduced to the joys of Symphonia, and I have one thing to say to the Suethors: LEAVE KRATOS ALONE.
Now, if there are others interested, I may be willing to do joint missions; currently I'm asking Trojie and Pads to help with the slash one, but if others want to do those two with one of my two agents, then you're welcome to ask. I think I'd like doing joint missions.

Hey everyone, hope y'all are doing well. Holiday season and all that. Hope this isn't a bother, but Sara and I just wanted to make a quick announcement. She and I have just got together, with help from a friend who we had both gone to for advice on the matter (much to our embarassment, they had apparently figured that a sledgehammer would work better when we had requested a scalpel, to be metaphorical about it), and in the excitement figured that an announcement might be in order. Again, I hope this doesn't bother you lot, and that you don't think of us as whoring for attention or anything, we just thought it was a good idea at the time. Best wishes for the holidays, everybody.

Technical nit-picking... by
on 2008-12-05 22:04:00 UTC
Link to this
I'm pretty sure the hunter guns are fuel rod cannon - heavy radiation and plasma burst weaponry, rather than goo.
In chapter 5 (looks like you co-wrote it with someone), it says "six tanks, and a few warthogs flew over the hill on the other side of the hill." First off, I'm pretty sure Scorpions don't fly - it's more of a lumbering crawl, or at least was in the original. Also, referencing multiple hills gets confusing very quickly - could something be added to identify them?
Per the bits of canon that I've read (Fall of Reach, mostly), I didn't think that Spartan toughness was generally known, so saying "The heavily armed troop transports were fast and maneuverable, and their plasma turrets were capable of killing even SPARTANs in a few shots" doesn't seem reasonable, unless the character making the observation has prior experience in the area.
Technical nit-picking aside, it's very well written. The characters are believable, and I'm definitely enjoying the descriptions of the navy action. The story is very much in the flavor of the Halo universe.
The story seems very unemotional at times, to the point of being almost clinical in its descriptions. It seems to spend more time discussing calibers and target areas than what the people involved are actually feeling.
Okay, one more technical nit-pick... The story mentions the Benelux (odd name - doesn't seem in-character for the universe) moving from low orbit to a geostationary orbit above Eva - that would suggest to me that Eva is equatorial, as otherwise, the Benelux would have to stand on her thrusters.
Geostationary orbit is also very, very high altitude - here on Earth, it's more than twice the equatorial circumference of the planet. Getting that high would make providing accurate orbital fire support difficult from the Benelux a bit difficult. While she could stand on her thrusters at a lower altitude, that quickly becomes a major power drain. -
Agreed on all points. by

Fixing those small technical errors really would improve this already-quite-good 'fic; small changes like that can increase the immersiveness for the audience. *claps for authors*

Thanks for the advice; I'll be sure to pass it on to my coauthors.
On the subject of the hunter guns, they actually are gel based weapons. The gel reference was very much intentional and canon based.
I concede that the SPARTAN reference was a little unreasonable, although that was an emulation of Eric Nylund's style from "The Flood". Ditto for the orbit and the emotion, although it was intentional for the "so it goes" bit.
I'll fix them if I can ever get the writers back. Thanks for the advice; I'll be sure to pass it on to my coauthors.

Beauty and the Beast one was dumber than a Stegosaurus with a head injury. Interrogation of Leia read like a very incomplete and very dumb Choose your Own Adventure book. Teasetting Ron was just idiotic (and it's a second-person to boot), but at least it was short. I have yet to read the other, longer ones, but I'll find time to at some point. All in all, they were more stupid than squicky, especially for someone who laughed at parts of C*l*b*i*n and Subjugation (Not much, and mostly at the massively retarded bits, but it happened at least once).

I finished both the original and the sequel. I also read 'Agony in Red', which was an attempt to make something more disturbing than that 'fic. All of this was more ridiculously stupid than it was squicky. The characters being tortured should be dead or at least somewhere very early in their 'fics, not in pain. No, scratch that. The right description is definitely 'dead', especially in the sequel - six hours in an airtight box filled with bodily waste at one point, apparently. Still, the torture descriptions managed to garner a 'mild nausea' rating from me, a bit lower than all of That Series combined. Actually, the last chapter of the sequel was just too stupid to be particularly disgusting, and Agony in Red was just moronic.
-
TS should have resulted in its victims being dead too. by
on 2008-12-07 14:31:00 UTC
Link to this
Let's not even get into the spear thing, but a six-year-old could point out the anatomy fail there. And poor Pikkle. I realise one doesn't lose all that much blood from being raped, even several times in a row, but she actually says "over a hundred" times (I think - could be worse, there were four thousand Corpsemakers in total and she could have detailed ALL of them!) so, if we assume each one took two minutes (though I'm probably being generous here, hehe) that's over three hours of constant pain and difficulty breathing since they were, um, utilising both appropriate apertures, so one would think he'd at least have passed out.
And at least Agony In Whatever Colour's author didn't claim to be a veterinarian! -
A vet? I didn't notice that particular one. by
on 2008-12-07 14:44:00 UTC
Link to this
That must be uncomfortable for the animals. Vet from Hell, anyone? Oh, and that's exactly what I said about TS - they should all be dead after... err... in the middle of that kind of abuse. And four thousand? I don't remember *that*, but then again I haven't read any Redwall canon in a while. Pikkle should have died from the some-number-under-a-hundredth, actually. Poor hare. Most or all of the TS missions should have/should have had (depending on whether they're completed or not) a mention of "Avaunt, necrophilia!" in them.
-
All done, sadly, except the Sawney Rath one. by
on 2008-12-07 15:45:00 UTC
Link to this
Nin volunteered for that one, but she's otherwise occupied right now. Going to hurt, though - it actually focuses on Tagg, with a brief cameo by Schizophrenic!Paedophile!Sawney. Sawney was about the only vermin leader who was actually a fairly decent guy before he went nuts, so Nin was pretty mad about that. Sadly we couldn't exorcise necrophilia which didn't actually explicitly occur, but it came pretty close. But it's bad enough, with the random incest and the paedo and the spur-of-the-moment orgies and the forced piss-drinking and the spear and the fact that she apparently doesn't realise that you can SEE people on the walltop of a fortified building particularly when it's besieged and there should be more than two defenders up there ...
Yeah, she said she's "in training to be a veterinarian" in the author's notes of Among The Roses. I don't know whether the author not knowing about the anatomy fail or just ignoring it in the name of getting off is creepier. The latter is probably better for society as a whole, though.
Have you seen her other works? The Lion King poem caused me physical pain. (As Nin said when we were discussing the mission via email; "It's called 'Poetic Orgy' and only one of those words is accurate.")
The irony is, I LIKE Redwall slashfic. Well, the non-graphic kind which does not involve physically impossible actions being perpetrated upon innocent characters. There's some gleeful fun in doing something the creator would disapprove of to something so cute and wholesome, but it still has to be written decently. And okay, Stormsong's death scene in the fic I borrowed him from was just as gruesome, but Snowspine was a better writer, it was far less detailed, and he actually got to DO things in the fic as a whole other than "be in extreme pain". -

I want to read a good slashfic for once. It makes a nice change from all the crap floating around (I'm looking - and pointing a Scarab Gun at - you, Subjugation, with the 'defiling Monty Python' charge), so a link would be a Very Good Thing.
Oh, and I just read Among the Roses now. The prose in that one is very, very urple, and now I understand what that 'doesn't mean you s*** rainbows' line was about. Didn't know it was part of That Series (Forgot to reread the Wiki page, I just clicked on all of the links that had the series name) - damn, now my badfic reading record is a bit off. I did read the poem, it was just plain stupid. I called BS on that one - Biological Impossibility is very, very common in Uoikih fics, but that one's particular offense was absolutely moronic. -

Here is VQ. Enjoy. Be warned, it has some rape scenes which are just as disturbing as TS, but in a good and non-graphic way. Riala is a rockin' heroine, though I admit I got distracted by the cute gay weasel.
I am going to accept on faith that the Lion King poem was supposed to be funny, therefore the bad biology "doesn't matter". I couldn't read more than four lines of it without wanting to scream, so I don't know.
I dare you to read "Sela's New Job" and "Cozair Prizzzoner" (the author's misspellings). My reaction was something along the lines of "They think whoredom is Sela's NEW Job? Wow, they're oblivious to subtext." -
I just read those two 'fics. by
on 2008-12-08 10:59:00 UTC

Rife with idiocy, and bad grammar to boot. Also, I think the victim in "Cosair Prizzzoner" should be at least almost dead or unconscious. The euphemisms used indicate that the author's under 18, and he apparently doesn't know much about biology. Fail author IS FAIL.

Don't know if I'll do the three Redwall horrors of Chaser Wolf's because I already MSTed them, but the Shrek one needs doing. Still not sure what to do with the horse, though. Reality Room, and let it die from the total lack of blood flow to the vital organs caused by its ridiculous proportions? Then what do they do with the corpse? Feed it to Dragon, maybe take some for themselves since they could do with some guilt-free meat?

You're primarily in the FMA fandom? Aren't there a metric shitload of WWII/Holocaust fics in that section? Mind you, I'm basing that on what I've heard hanging around the more reputable parts of internet fandom.
Hell yeah, new FMA starts in April. Apparently it'll be taking Gundam 00's Sunday 5pm slot. (Which means it'll be 8/9am for me, and I'll be able to watch it.) -

And yeah, thanks to the whole "getting stuck on the other side of the Gate right before WWII breaks out" thing at the end of the series/movie, there's PLENTY of Holocaust fics... I have nothing against how the writers ended the series at all, I actually think it was pretty brilliant. But all those stupid fics... I mean, I took a class on the Holocaust as an elective last year, and we really delved into the psychology of the whole thing. And ANGST ISN'T POSSIBLE when you don't feel like a human being anymore. >.
Besides, I don't think there's any reason for the Elrics to end up in a concentration camp. Sure, Ed's technically physically disabled, but I get the feeling he could hide it well thanks to the automail. Not to mention that they'd probably leave Germany while hunting for the atom bomb, so...
[/rant]
Can't wait for the new series, either. Didn't know it'd start that early, though... I thought it'd be another year before dubs came out, and then they'd play it on TV. Though I'm in the US, so things could be a bit different... (You're in the UK, right? XD) -

One of those doesn't fit with the others. And I'm not surprised at where WWII/Holocaust fics can pop up. I keep finding them all over Bleach, despite the characters being Japanese which opens up the Pacific theatre for them to get involved in never mind that most of the cast would have either been in Soul Society or not born at the time. /end rant.
I'd like to see someone trying to put Ed and Al in a concentration camp. They wouldn't go easily, alchemy or no alchemy.
I wasn't clear? *checks back* No, I wasn't. I meant that it airs in Japan in April. I've gotten into the habit of getting up early on Sunday morning to watch Gundam 00, which is the 5pm timeslot in Japan (8am in the UK currently), so if FMA is in that timeslot when 00 ends I know I'll be able to get up in time to watch it live via internet streams. -

if you think anime takes a long time to cross from Japan to America, think how much longer it would take to cross from America to the UK. We're lucky if we get something two years after it originally airs in Japan.
It's for this reason that I rely mainly on internet downloads to get anime. -
True. by
on 2008-12-08 01:28:00 UTC
Link to this
I've never thought about how long it'd take anime to get to the UK, but in the My Little Pony collecting community, certain models/playsets never make it out of the US. It drives the foreign collectors crazy, cuz they usually wind up paying someone over here to buy and ship the items for them.
At the same time, there's been a number of European-only MLP releases that plenty of USA collectors would give up their firstborn to own...
So I'm not terribly surprised about anime taking so long. Still, that sucks.

One is about an empire, modeled on Byzantium* (knowledge of Byzantine Greek is necessary for this**.) I've mostly focused what remaining creative prowess I have on the setting, so I don't have many characters. I only have ideas for the Hero and the Emperor:
The Hero is either a mercenary from the Divided Empire to the North (based on the Holy Roman Empire, in which case Medieval German and Slavic is needed as well)a kid from some peaceful province who finds out that he is the Chosen One, or a Half Elf.
The Emperor is a Combination of Basil II, Manuel Commenus, and Roy Greenhilt from Order of the Stick. He is your standard Reasonable Authority Figure, and is as Snarky as he is wise.
*I have not read Harry Turtledove's books in my life (availability reasons, oviously). I've heard of his Videsoss series, but I developed the idea without thinking of it.
**Wikipedia can give me knowledge of Byzantime Customs, Government, Dress, Army, etc, etc if nessesary.

Double Plug of Strangeness. by

First and possible foremost:
GenericSurface, the PPC's first sort-of official webcomic, is back on air. Continuing straight on from the last comic, #57:Things Start To Fall Apart.
For those of you just joining us, or who can't remember what in the world is going on, I recommend you head back at least to #49, the beginning of the current storyline. Or you could go to #-5, the actual beginning.
But! I have a second plug to make, first. It's been a little while in the making, and a few people have heard about it already, but most of you haven't. So, I am proud (?) to present...
The PPC Pairing Generator
It has buttons. You press the buttons. It gives you story summaries. You laugh (or groan, or look puzzled, or whatever). You don't need to type anything into the box.
It features the entire list of Agents from the Wiki, so, y'know, that's quite a lot, and also every Flower I know about. If anyone has any suggestions for some of the other variables, though, I'm happy to take them -- my capacity for thinking up verbs is hardly unlimited.

The season for PPC Christmas filk, that is. Think up a PPC version of your favorite holiday tune and submit it here for posterity and the PPC Christmas Songbook.
Feel free to use songs that have been done already if you have a different take on them. Also, don't feel limited to Christmas if you personally observe Hanukkah or the Solstice or any other holiday.
I think I'm going to try "Badfic Roasting on an Open Flame," myself.
BONUS: If I have time after examsand after I get my act together for my movie parts, I'll make recordings of all the songs I know how to sing, hopefully in time for Christmas.
Have fun!

PPC, Oh PPC
to the tune of Hanukkah, Oh Hanukkah
PPC, Oh PPC, let's kill the Mary Sue
We can have a party, as we kill the Stu too
Gather around now Agents, we have stories to slay
Legolas is pregnant, and Arwen's gone away.
And while we are killing
In each death we shall take delight
For each Sue we shall spite
We shall set things to rights
And fight for the canon that we love*
For each Sue we shall spite
We shall set things to rights
And fight for the canon that we love*.
Yey! It's done. I'm not entirely happy with the starred line but it'll do.

"Badfic Roasting on an Open Flame" by
on 2008-12-13 16:54:00 UTC
Link to this
This was inspired partly by my boyfriend, who donated the first line, and partly by article 1.6.11 in the FAQ For Other People.
To the tune of "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire."
Badfic roasting on an open flame,
Flamers cackling in the night;
Fanbrats squeal, "OMG, ur so lame!"
And we say, "Yeah, they're kinda right."
Everybody knows that concrit and an open mind
Help to make a fanfic right;
Being mean, being truly unkind
Will only tend to start a fight.
We know that badfic's there today
We know that lots of Mary-Sues are on their way
And every canon's fan is gonna cry
And yet we smile--oh yes; I'll tell you why:
Because the agents of the PPC,
Action, and Infrastructure, too,
Although it is strange, they greet badfic with glee
And make goodfic out of badfic--yes, make goodfic for you.

Double filk post! by

Link to this
Gosh, I'm relly getting filky. Maybe it's because I have so much Christmas songbooks and the radio stations I listen to constantly play Christmas songs.
But without further ado, here's the filks.
"Joy to the World (The 'Sue is Dead)"
(Sung to the tune of "Joy to the World")
Joy to the world, the 'Sue is dead,
And Canon is restored!
Let songs of joy
Ring through HQ,
For death hath come to 'Sue
For death hath come to 'Sue
For death, for death hath come to 'Sue.
Joy to the 'Verse! The Canon reigns;
May badfic be destroyed!
A glass of Bleepka
we raise in toast,
to goodfic's health and joy,
to goodfic's health and joy,
to goodfic, oh goodfic's health and joy.
Let no more 'Sues and badslash live,
Nor wangst infest the ground!
We'll never rest
For Duty calls
As long as badfic's found,
As long as badfic's found,
As long, as long as badfic's found!
Canon shall rule with truth and grace,
And 'Sues fall at Its feet!
Her doom is near; she stands with fear
For revenge shall be so sweet,
Yes, revenge shall be so sweet,
Yes, revenge, revenge shall be so sweet!
"Away in an RC"
(Sung to the tune of "Away in a Manger")
Away in an RC, a chair for a bed
Two PPC Agents laid down weary heads
The console then "BEEP"-ed and boy, did they yell
Two PPC Agents who're tired as hell
A mission is calling, so now they must wake
But PPC Agents want Bleeprin and breaks
Ironic O'erpower looks down from the sky
And cackles with malice while missions are nigh
Protect all the goodfic and slay all the bad
Though this job is thankless and people go mad
The Canon is thankful for your tender care
So slay all the 'Sues lurking deep in Its lairs
Hope you like. -

“PPC Agents Are Coming”
(sung to the tune of "Nuttin' For Christmas")
I joined the Fellaship of the Ring
Somebody reported me
Claimed that Lord Elrond’s my da-ddy
Somebody reported me
I violated Legolas
Filled up Boromir with lust
Frodo’s love just was a must
Somebody reported me
Oh, PPC Agents are coming
Coming to take me away
I know they will show no mercy
I fear they’re coming today
I killed a cave troll by myself
Somebody reported me
Had hair that’s better than an Elf’s
Somebody reported me
My eyes are green yet purple, too
Sometimes they are aqua blue
I made Arwen say, “Boo hoo”
Somebody reported me
Oh, PPC Agents are coming
Coming to take me away
I know they will show no mercy
I fear they’re coming today
I screwed the Canon up, that’s true
Somebody reported me
And to that mis-take I now rue
Somebody reported me
Next time I’ll be going straight
I won’t be a ‘Sue, just wait
I’d start now, but it’s too late—
Somebody reported me
Oh, PPC Agents are coming
Coming to take me away
I know they will show no mercy
I fear they’re coming today
“Mary Sue’s in Arda Right Now”
(sung to the tune of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town")
You better make sure a weapon’s on hand
Sharpen your sword; be on guard through the land
Mary Sue’s in Arda right now
She’s making a list and checking it twice
Gonna find out who’s “hawt” and who’s “nyce”
Mary Sue’s in Arda right now
She has a Ring of Power
And a doubtful prophecy
She only wants to jump your bones—
Be on guard, for Eru’s sake!
You better make sure a weapon’s on hand
Sharpen your sword; be on guard through the land
Mary Sue’s in Arda right now
“Here Comes Mary Sue (Right Down Rivendell Lane)”
(sung to the tune of "Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)")
Here comes Mary Sue
Here comes Mary Sue
Right down Rivendell Lane
Jay and Acacia and all the Agents
Are twitching now with pain
Bells are ringing
Hobbits singing
All is urple-y bright
Take your Bleeprin and kill her now
‘Cause Mary Sue is a blight
Here comes Mary Sue
Here comes Mary Sue
Right down Rivendell Lane
She’s raping Canon and putting out
For Legolas again
See her skipping through the flowers
What a terrible sight
Play some cards, sharpen up your sword
‘Cause Mary Sue is a blight
Here comes Mary Sue
Here comes Mary Sue
Right down Rivendell Lane
If you’re “hawt” then age won’t matter—
She’ll love you just the same
She doesn’t know that only Canon
Can make everything right
Laugh out loud at her naïve-ette
‘Cause Mary Sue is a blight
Here comes Mary Sue
Here comes Mary Sue
Right down Rivendell Lane
She’ll come around when the Suethors call
And the badfic’s up again
Peace will come if the PPC
Will kill and set things alright
Let’s give thanks to Illúvatar
For Mary Sue’s death tonight -

on 2008-12-12 01:14:00 UTC
Link to this
Sung to the tune of "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch", of course. I couldn't resist using it...
*clears throat and attempts to sing*
You're A Mean One, Mary Sue
You're a mean one, Mary Sue.
You really are a b*tch.
You made Legolas a teenager,
You’ve outdueled Aragorn,
Mary Sue.
You're so damn perfect that
You give me a twitch.
You're a monster, Mary Sue.
You’ve screwed the Canon up.
Your brain is nonexistent,
And you scream of Sparklipoo,
Mary Sue.
You can’t even touch Canon with a
thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole.
You're a vile one, Mary Sue.
You employ much urple prose.
You have all the sappy sweetness
of a giant sugar pill,
Mary Sue.
Given the choice between the two of you
I'd take the giant sugar pill.
You're a foul one, Mary Sue.
You're a nasty, wasty slut.
You’ve messed up the numerology,
And you’ve bedded many males,
Mary Sue.
The three words that best describe your fic are as follows, and I quote:
"Stink. Stank. Stunk."
You're a harlot, Mary Sue.
You're the queen of badfic plots.
You’re a walking plothole factory,
using Deus-ex-machina,
Mary Sue.
Your fic is an apalling dump heap overflowing with the most disgraceful assortment of deplorable rubbish imaginable,
Mangled up in tangled up knots.
You nauseate me, Mary Sue.
With a nauseous super-naus.
I’ve now run out of my Bleeprin
Reading ‘bout your sparkly horse.
Mary Sue.
You're a physically over-perfect Canon mangler
With glittery blood.
Um...yeah. Hope you like it. -

Just for Whovians, perhaps. Whovians who have seen some rather disturbing fan communities that bring a whole new creepy meaning to the phrase "selfcest." Some fanbrats take their love of David Tennant a little too far.
Also, I hate mpreg. And Rincewind doesn't deserve that kind of misfortune, though knowing his luck, it could actually happen. Run, Rincewind! Run from the scary fanbrats!
And anyways, it's because of evil fics like these that I joined this community. That, and to use my literary masochist tendencies for the power of good. As a slash fanwoman, I feel honorbound to exterminate those who give the rest of us a bad name. -

O come, let us adore her,
O come, let us ignore her,
O come, let us deplore her,
Mary the Sue.
O charge, dear Assassins,
Charge in exultation,
Charge her that tramples on Tolkien’s holy word.
Give to the guilty no trial or quarter;
O come, let us adore her,
O come, let us ignore her,
O come, let us deplore her,
Mary the Sue.
Lo! see the Balrog,
Durin’s Bane approaches,
O Sue! stand and greet thy doom; do not dare to run.
Hail to the canon, now slowly restoring;
O come, let us adore her,
O come, let us ignore her,
O come, let us deplore her,
Mary the Sue.

When Agents repose in Response Centers gray,
their console objects with a ‘BEEP!’
They must away, without delay,
to put a Sue to sleep.
Let ev’ry Assassin grab a blade,
and ev’ry Bad Slasher a bell;
a portal opens, into shade,
where vampire-Sue doth dwell...
O come let us abhor her,
O come let us abhor her,
O come let us abhor her,
the vampire-Sue.
Not just a vampire, a matchmaker too,
One Agent’s seeing red,
Two hot guys 'Sue spots and proceeds to go “Ooh!”
Thank Glod she soon will be dead.
The men pair off, there’s drama had,
the Slasher must exorcise fast—
Miss Sue’s still complaining her pairing was rad,
E’en though her life is now past...
O come let us deplore her,
O come let us deplore her,
O come let us deplore her,
the matchmaker-Sue.
Why yes, Gesu Bambino does use the same chorus as O Come All Ye Faithful. >.>

What teen is this, whom Suethor wrote,
On Legolas' lap is weeping?
Whom hobbits greet with anthems sweet
While Agents watch are keeping?
This, this is a Mary-Sue
Whom hobbits love and elf-boys woo
Haste, haste to kill her now
This monster, this Sue called Mary
Why lie she in fair Rivendel
Where Council now is meeting?
Good fandom, fear, the Sue is near
She's messed up all the seating.
Sword, bow will pierce her through
The PPC will slay the Sue.
Hail, hail the Agents bold
They've killed this Sue called Mary
So bring them bleeprin and a towel
To wipe off all the glitter
Let no Sues sing in Lord of Rings
If she comes, we will hit her.
Raise, raise a cheer for you
Let joy ring over all HQ
Joy, joy, the Sue is dead
That dreadful Sue called Mary. -

I just joined recently, that's why. Have a Prinny suit anyway. If you don't know what it does, it increases all your stats by a large amount, but it makes you add "-dood" to the end of every sentence, like this, dood. Warning: Make sure you are not picked up and thrown while wearing one, as you may have to wait at the nearest Netherworld hospital to be resurrected from the explosion.

That's only a real danger in the Disgaea-verse, where the thing's from. There, everyone can be picked up and thrown. i think even the biggest enemy in the game (well, the first, anyway) can be picked up, but I'm not sure. Stat boosts from it go over 999 though, so it's still quite useful. Actually, in the game, the suits don't really cause you to explode like a normal prinny or look like one, but I'll just shrug that off as a programming limitation. Heh.

Sadly, the only Redwall fanfiction I still have on my account on the pit is serious. The first chapter is appalling though, and was written about three years before the rest of it. I can tell you that it's definitely Not a Good Idea. If it gives me even a hint of nausea, which is what it did, then it truly is a horrible and disturbing 'fic indeed.

It was actually your fault I ended up in the PPC, Laburnum. I read that guide while you were writing it (even suggested some stuff, as I recall) and ended up reading PPC stuff, your's first.
So I'm all your fault. -

Anywho, welcome! I gift you with a truckload of Bleepolate, some in the shape of plovers, most not. Also, if you find a Ypur or two in there, let me know.

It's not bad, it's just an illustration of the universal truth that Morbid Curiosity is unconquerable. Even in the face of essays.

OT: Blood Status in Harry Potter and Crossovers by
on 2008-12-10 12:01:00 UTC

Here's an interesting question for you guys. I just wanna see what everyone else thinks.
Most everyone knows about how Blood Status is in Harry Potter, my question is, in Crossovers that introduce witches of different kinds (I.e.: Charmed Witches, or Witches of Eileanan), what would their Blood Status be? Would they be Pureblood, due to actually being the definition of witch, half-blood if they have mortal parents, Muggle born in some cases, or (the really boring scenario) in a genre of their own?
Assuming it was any of the first three, how would Lucius Malfoy react to, say, meeting Piper Halliwell?
Artic's thought for the month. -
It's hard to say... by

They certainly wouldn't define themselves by HP terms, but HP characters might define them by what they know. In the case of Piper, she's from an old witch family, but her father was mortal, so Lucius would probably consider her a halfblood.

The PPC Advent Calender 2008
(With the kind assistance of the cast of GenericSurface, who are very glad I didn't really have to shove them into little boxes)
The mechanism is simple: click on the date and an image will come up. The first ten days are already up, so you can click through them. Preferably in order, since each contains spoilers for the ones before it. The idea here is that you could have a hardcopy version of this in which the new parts in each image are what you'd find behind the door that day. Obviously, though, I can't do that at this point.
Since this is in effect only a fifteen-day project, I should even get it all finished! Thrilling fun, I know. We'll see.
