  • So, how many people read Paollini`s third crime? by Leto Haven on 2008-10-21 16:03:00 UTC Link to this

From the reviews that I have been reading, it is pretty bad. It is as Marty Stuish as the first two, with only added angst that disapears after the scene that it is in.

How can this boy think that he is a good writer? Any publisher worth their salt would not publish it, and they didn`t, but they must be kicking themselves in the teeth for not doing it now.

I feal for the human race if this pile of blatant plagerism can get good rep.

So, those that "won" the dubious honour of having to read this book after the Harry Potter gambling, what are your opinions?

    • I finished it on Saturday. by lynxihez on 2008-10-23 11:50:00 UTC Link to this

It is in fact as bad as the first two, if not worse, and there a number of moments that made me say 'BWUH?!' at the top of my voice.

      Yeah, it wasn't good.

    • Not yet. by VixenMage on 2008-10-23 04:33:00 UTC Link to this

I actually haven't even touched Eldest, since the first atrocity was enough to turn me off to the dude.

So far, though, I've looked at a few different reviews, and they seem to be either

      1) This book was awesome, it was perfect, Paolini pulled off another hit and if you didn't like it, well, you're not the intended audience (BWAH? I'm not "too old" for it, I'm freakin' eighteen!) and should probably stick to your generation's classics and stop nitpicking. Or something.

      2) This book wasn't a worthy conclusion of the first two, which were amazing, because of A) the plot was too slow and there was way too much filler, B) the pacing was weird (which amounts to the same thing, really), or C) What. The. Heck? I don't know what he did, but it was not nearly as good. He should've just taken a little longer and finished the series. [The general consensus seems to be that if he had too much for one book, he still didn't have enough for two, and should've just cut stuff to make it fit.]

      3) Another disappointment by Paolini, I'm not sure why I picked this up after the first two, but it's basically more angsting, more whining, more Eragon-can-do-no-wrong hero worship, more self-insertion. Don't bother.

*shrug* That's what I've seen, anyway. I'll probably be towards the third camp.

(Does anyone know where I can find a good snarky synopsis of the first, or second books? I remember one Agent doing them, but haven't seen them in a while, and for some reason I'm thinking it was Nscangal, but that might've been 'cos she did the DaVinci Code... thing. 's like a cross between a review and an MST.)

Also, I can't be the only person who's waiting with bated breath for the day after Mr. Paolini finishes his book, and then stages a press release, saying "OH my GOD, I can't believe people actually bought that! Dude, I just lost a bet with my friend for $1,000! He told me people would buy the worst book I could put out as long as I threw enough fantasy into it, but I never would've believed him... Ah, well. Let me get on and see if I can write something for the real fantasy readers out there now, eh?" (seriously. I want something to redeem the homeschooled authors out there.)

One of my dormmates picked it up, and declared it abandoned in disgust yesterday. This evening, after classes, I shall delve into the void of canonical badfic.

Emperor, guide my mind. For though I walk in the valley in the shadow of badfic, I shall fear no badfic, for I am what the badfic fears.

      • Initial Report by Winter on 2008-10-23 14:22:00 UTC Link to this

Gotten through the first couple of chapters-really, there's nothing of interest to report. Quite simply nothing of interest-at least horrendously badfic can keep you reading because there's something *happening*.

It's just...boring. I'm over two hundred pages in, and nothing of interest has happened yet. (In the meantime, I'm reading books for English class that get through a well-written, meaningful plot and good characterization in a hundred pages.) I'd DEFINITELY rather be reading fanfiction!

I've read the first two, so I have a certain morbid curiousity about whether he can make this one even worse. But then again, that would involve parting with money for the thing - and 20 ish dollars is too much to pay for something that will probably end its life as a coaster!

I do have one friend - an intelligent person in virtually all other respects - who actually likes CP, so maybe I'll borrow it from her.

I've heard that one of the last lines, or something, was along the lines of "The Doctor could travel to any time, or alternate reality" or something like that.

Just when we thought he could sink no lower, eh?

As I do to read SMeyer's Sparkly Vampire series. A friend of mine read Eragon, and when it was mentioned at dinner and I said the parts I had read and what I had heard made it sound like an obvious Star Wars-meets-LotR rip-off, he nodded his head and agreed rather emphatically.

And to think he can churn out this dreck and I still can't work out where to go with my two epic novels I'm working on - one an expansive noir novel and the other The Adventures of Heist the Porcupine.

And that was enough. After I finished, I literally threw it at my wall in disgust. And the movie wasn't any better. I agree with the comment someone made; that it's simply Star Wars retold via Lord of the Rings, with a bit of Dragonriders of Pern thrown in.

The reason publishers publish it is because it does appeal to the masses, unfortunately. Since a lot of us are widely-read, and have the ability to critically analyze a book by looking at it, that's why you'll hardly find a good word about it around here. It's a generic fantasy novel with elements of others, thus making it easy to read, and even easier to create your mental images of what's happening in there. In a lot of cases, people won't even realise that the plot is essentially Star Wars, since it has dragons and it's in a fantasy setting, as opposed to the Sci-Fi genre of Star Wars.
What really irks me is that all these people are praising him because of the age he was when he released the books. 'Oh he's so talented, and so young!'. Too bad they're mistaking talent for determination.

Ok, that's the end of Artic's rant, brought to you by the letters W,T and F.

And to make it worse, a person I think is a Goodfic writer likes the books. Said Goodfic writer is Kenya Starflight, who wrote not just some of the best Star Wars fic that i've read, but also the Calvin and Hobbes fic 'Reminiscence'(link here:http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2048837/1/Reminiscence).
How could she degrade herself this way?

PS: Please reply! Yes, I do need the attention.

        • It's not degradation... by Artic Blade on 2008-10-22 12:56:00 UTC Link to this

Just the ability to find what's truly good in the story. I was rather impressed that he was capable of finishing a book before being an adult, and he has made an excellent world, it's just that he focuses more on taking elements from other stories than creating ones of his own in his own, original work. The story of Star Wars, while probably the most famous example, follows a writing blueprint, which I can't remember the name of, that most stories follow in one way or another. The reason I support Star Wars as opposed to Eragon is the lack of any truly original elements in his story. Eragon is essentially a Character Insert, CP has admitted it himself, but if I ever met such a person, I'd probably deck him.

A lot of my friends enjoy Eragon. And a lot of excellent authors would too, because it's a familiar story being retold. A lot of us a pickier though, preferring to want something new in a story, rather than reread old stuff in a new format. The reason Kenya Starflight likes Eragon is because the storyline so closely parallels Star Wars. SHe is an excellent writer, I can tell just from reading that one story, but I'm not gonna hold it against her for liking the story, just because I don't. Everyone has a right to their own opinions. I just don't happen to agree with this one because CP offends me as a writer in the way that he has crappy character development, cannot seem to make original fiction, has a generic location, etc.

According to Wikipedia, copyright doesn't expire unless:

                * The work was created and first published before January 1, 1923, or at least 95 years before January 1 of the current year, whichever is later; or
                * The last surviving author died at least 70 years before January 1 of the current year

As Ursula K. Le Guin is still alive and the A Wizard of Earthsea was published in 1968, neither of these conditions have been fulfilled.

                Public domain on Wikipedia

                • M bad, I thought the series was older. by Artic Blade on 2008-10-25 02:21:00 UTC Link to this

Much older. They were published in 1968, and Australian copyright lasts for 50 years, unless special extensions are made. 50 years after the death of the author, that is.

In which case, this just adds another bad point to the crime. Unless he gained permission from Le Guin herself, he could eaisly be sued for it. Chances are that no-one else has made the connection, or Le Guin refuses to read the books.
Now that gives me a humerous mental picture of all the best Fantasy Authors sitting in a circle, discussing this and that. They look at the cover of 'Eragon', and decide to throw it in the fire. They all have British accents for some reason, though not all of them are British.

Ugh. Don't get me started on Brisingr. I'm over 200 pages in, and absolutely NOTHING of importance has happened yet. I'm starting to think that it might just be another brick of filler material until Eragon finally kills off Galbwhatever in Book 4.

Mild spoilers below in the event anyone cares...

Paolini seems to have picked up on a few teenage trends, as there's a cutting scene and a furry. Well, okay, the cutting scene is a "test of strength" over who gets to lead the rebels, but it reminded me WAY TOO MUCH of the emo!Sue cutting her wrists in badfic... And the furry is an Elf guy who decided to take on the form of a wolf, or something to that effect. Apparently he gives off a scent that makes all the women in the vicinity want to mate with him. >.
And yeah, emo!Eragon. Good Lord. One minute he's angsting over how many people he's killed, then he mercilessly kills a soldier who's begging to be spared, then he angsts over that, then he kills some more people... Ugh. I'm rather pacifistic, so I'm in pain at those parts... >.

Like many Infrastructure Departments, the DMSE&R tends to just get mentions in other missions. I believe there's an Agent from them in the Alumia exorcism, for instance, and I recall some from the macrovirus crisis. But there's no actual 'fics involving just them.

As to whether it would work? Well, it could, naturally. There is a tragic lack of actual Infrastructure stories (most are either an Action Agent visiting, an Inf Agent sent on an Action mission, or some sort of crisis -- the Intel reports may count as pure Inf stories, as well as Leto's General Store writings, and maybe the DIA stuff), and I've had various conversations about redressing that. Sadly, though, the life of a Finance Agent is dull and not worth writing about. DMSE&R, however, might be promising.

I'm writing a short article that aims to explain the nature of tea and to extol its virtues to people who are not familiar with it or who just want to get their basic facts straight. I am a long-time tea lover, so I ask all of you: What do you want to know about tea? There's no such thing as a stupid question. I want to make sure my article will be useful to people who don't know much (or anything) about tea and tea-drinking, so I need to know what people don't know.

Bonus: If you already love tea, what are some things you wish non-tea-drinkers understood about it?

Well, I already know the answer, but a question could be 'What are the benefits, if any, of herbal tea?'

      • Re: Various herbal teas have various effects. by Paddlebrains on 2008-10-27 01:47:00 UTC Link to this

        Benefits of herbal tea?

None, unless either a) you like looking like a hippy or b) you really like hot Ribena.

        • I don't know about "none." by Neshomeh on 2008-10-27 21:11:00 UTC Link to this

None that are well-researched or well-documented, that's for sure. However, I happen to like a variety of non-Camellia sinensis hot infused beverages (my definition of herbal tea), and I think there are benefits in drinking them just as there are benefits from infused tea. {= ) As for echinacea warding off colds or chamomile making you sleepy, I don't know, but it can't hurt to try. They smell nice, they taste nice, they can contain antioxidants and various other healthful chemicals, they provide variety in one's life, and they don't have to have caffeine. I call those benefits.

~Neshomeh, who doesn't recognize the word "Ribena," but will look it up.

          • I don't know about "it can't hurt to try" by Paddlebrains on 2008-10-28 00:49:00 UTC Link to this

But when it comes to echinacea, it's been tested plenty, and doesn't stop you getting colds in the slightest.

I find herbal teas disappointing. They smell like they should be gorgeous, but they always taste of hot Ribena. Also, call me a purist, but I like my tea stewed black with cow juice dumped in it. Preferably stewed long enough to stand a spoon up in it. Herbal teas just can't compare.

You can try something with blackberry leaves in it, for one. Those have tannins, too.

Also, there is chai, which is not strictly herbal, but it doesn't really taste at all of the tea in it, either. Chai is amazing if you like spices, though, and you're also supposed to put milk (and maybe sweetener) in it.

              • stay way from Yorkshire tea then by Paddlebrains on 2008-10-28 19:12:00 UTC Link to this

Presumably, somewhere out there, there are civilised people, who threaten a delicate china cup of hot water with a teabag, then add lemon to it. You could be one of that sort of tea drinker instead. Unfortunately, over here in Yorkshire, we have to take our tea the manly way. Otherwise how would we know we were in Yorkshire? Aside from the grumpy old men and the flatcaps, of course.

              • Ansela, you are my target audience! by Neshomeh on 2008-10-28 00:57:00 UTC Link to this

I mean, you don't have to like tea, but my goal is to get the word out--the right word--for people who are not crotchety seasoned tea-drinkers like Pads. For example, highly-steeped tea is definitely not for beginners. You definitely want it more steeped if you're going to put other stuff in it, but not if you're going to drink it straight.

Also, it's true that smell doesn't necessarily reflect flavor, but tea is a multi-sensory experience. Each element should be enjoyed for itself, IMO.

And, you know, if you don't like tea, you can try other hot steeped beverages until you find something you do like. ^_^

~Neshomeh, devil's advocate and maybe a little bit of a hippie.

Re the antioxidants, green and black tea are just the same. Tea is also a natural source of fluoride! It has zinc and folic acid in it, good for keeping away the neural tube defects if you're trying to bring a new tea drinker into the world. And, without milk, it has no calories. Helps protect against some cancers too.

                  • Americans, yeah. by Neshomeh on 2008-10-28 21:43:00 UTC Link to this

I think lot of us start on the wrong foot and get turned off tea forever. Apparently some fool on Yahoo! somewhere said that Earl Gray tastes like Froot Loops. A girl who writes for our little student publication went in expecting Froot Loops and got tea with bergamot, and of course was shocked and dismayed. That's the sort of thing I want to correct, at least on my campus.

Part of the problem is not growing up with tea. It's an acquired taste, so if people haven't got a liking for it from saturation in the womb, it takes time to appreciate it.

The other part of the problem is the culture of instant gratification. One can slam a quick cup of tea if necessary, but I've always liked the process of boiling water, watching the tannins seep from the teabag, breathing the steam, feeling the warmth of the cup, and finally savoring the flavor. It's more than just a beverage--it's anti-stress. Perhaps that's an Asian influence, but they did start the whole tea-drinking thing.

                    ... I'm rambling. I'm not even sure I have a point, other than "tea is fantastic." ^_^;

~Neshomeh, going to peruse the tea website now.

Well, I'm with you on the ritual. When Trojie and I are in the midst of writing, I need a constant supply of tea, but my pint-and-a-half mug takes about ten minutes to brew to my satisfaction. So I end up just chucking the milk in when it's like dishwater, and letting it brew next to the computer. But it's never the same. Mostly, I think, because part of the ritual is letting it brew for the length of time it takes to smoke a roll.

As for saturation in the womb, you're not wrong there either. When I was visiting my sister a few weeks back, we took my two year old niece out to buy her first ever proper teacup, because it just doesn't taste right out of a plastic beaker. She likes it milky at the moment, but we'll train her onto the harder stuff as best we can.

I wasn't vastly keen on tea when I was dead little, but my parents drink it constantly, so it was that or water. I will admit to taking three sugars at first. Brining it down to two was easy. Cutting down to one, not so bad. Cutting out sugar altogether was tough, but made me lose a stone.

Oh, and Earl Grey? Vile muck. Stick to Tetley or PG Tips.

                • I honestly have to agree about one thing. by Artic Blade on 2008-10-28 01:03:00 UTC Link to this

And that the teas smell create, and then don't follow up on flavour. And it also depends on the tea that we're looking at. Green tea has proven to contain antioxidants that enable you to lose weight if you drink it before exercising by loosening up the cholesterol and fat in the bloodstream. Other than that, I'd say the ohter effects would mostly come through aromatherapy from the tea, not actually drinking it.

Artic, whose new white kitten is wondering what these fun 'Key' things are.

I wish non-tea-drinkers could understand that the flaky black bits are just tannin, and they make the tea taste better, and actually I'll thank them not to try to clean my mug, because I've been cultivating that black gunge for weeks.

      • Tannin? Really? by Neshomeh on 2008-10-23 02:17:00 UTC Link to this

I figured it was just tiny flakes of tea leaf, which do admittedly contain tannin, but not in a pure form. Unless we're talking about different black flaky bits.

Either way, yeah, it won't hurt you, so relax. ^_^

        • probably limescale too by Paddlebrains on 2008-10-24 14:00:00 UTC Link to this

We get a lot of limescale in the water here, and it makes for positively delightful scum on the top. And then, presumably, gets stained black and adheres to the inside of the mug, where it gradually becomes thicker and knobblier. So it's not so much flaky bits as the entire inside of the mug being coated with a thick tar.

          • Ahhh, I get it. by Neshomeh on 2008-10-24 17:38:00 UTC Link to this

I always wondered about the scum on the top. It gets there even when I'm sure the mug is perfectly washed out, so it couldn't be soap scum. Well, now I know. ^_^ I'm not sure I'm adventurous enough to let it accumulate in my mugs, but still, it's something I can include in the "what the heck is that in my cup?!" section. Thanks!

            ~Neshomeh

            • Re: Ahhh, I get it. by Paddlebrains on 2008-10-25 02:02:00 UTC Link to this

The true tea drinker will always let it accumulate. Washing it out washes away the flavour! Next time you wash your tea mug, wash the outside, and wash around the rim inside, about where you fill it up to (there should be a handy line of scum for guidance). The repeated boiling water will kill any germs, and after a few weeks, you'll be horrifed by seeing what your intestines must look like.

    • Well, a couple I can think of. by VixenMage on 2008-10-23 04:50:00 UTC Link to this

Since it is, after all, HQ, the laws of reality don't necessarily apply all the time so much.

It could be HQ itself answering her, or her voice reverberating off of the concrit, which is what I thought at least some of HQ is made of, sparked some kind of reaction. Or there could be a telekinetic... being... wandering about, answering, or, as Artic said, could be a ghost.

Also, definitely, definitely up for a Gathering on the East Coast 'fore I go off to college. In fact, we don't have to wait until summer! :D But we can if y'all would prefer it. Whereabouts were you thinking-- maybe Boston? It seems like a good place for a meet-up. *crosses fingers* Anywhere in the North is easier for me, I'm right around the Hartford, CT, area, so Boston would be perfect. But other places are good, too-- I don't mind a trip up to two or three hours; past that, I might have to reconsider. Ideas, anyone?

      • I was just about to say that! by Sedri on 2008-10-23 05:45:00 UTC Link to this

The Ironic Over-Power, I mean. Or it could be the walls themselves, talking - after all, they've been burnt, kicked and twisted by the will of agents for so long that they are BOUND to become sentient at some point.

        • Oooh! by Luana Starlight on 2008-10-25 19:06:00 UTC Link to this

Actually, talking walls sounds good. We could go even further and this room could also be a place where sentient furniture resides. I will have to work on it. Thanks!

        • If there is a metaphor... by Tomato on 2008-10-23 18:27:00 UTC Link to this

It becomes reality somewhere in the PPC. Who hasn't said "if these walls could talk..." at some point? Saying it in the wrong place could invoke the Ironic Over-Power and the walls would start talking.

          • And THAT would be a nightmare by Sedri on 2008-10-23 21:54:00 UTC Link to this

Typical of HQ, but a nightmare. Perhaps there's some little department somewhere that deals with metaphors? I don't know HOW, but it could be interesting...

    • There's tons of things! by Artic Blade on 2008-10-23 02:50:00 UTC Link to this

Firstly, there's the Minis. Not sure which ones would be able to teleport or anything like that, but I know my mini-Agent, Arit, is capable of shapeshifting and all that, so he could easily answer back.
Next, there's the ghosts. Not sure if HQ would have many, but maybe if the room were close to the Tomb of the Forgotten Agent?
Then it could always be herself answering back. I'm guessing Quantum Physics in HQ would be very skewed, so talking to yourself could very well cause a copy of yourself to form.
And my final idea, why not the security team? They're Weeds, and as we know, weeds can get ANYWHERE. *Glares at his garden*.

Or we could go with ye old reliabile hallucinations...

        • On the actual blog post. by Laburnum on 2008-10-23 23:54:00 UTC Link to this

Someone commenting on the blog post article called the writer of the "how to tell fourteen-year-olds to write slashfic" a paedophile. I can't even begin to explain what's wrong with that.

      • I think the problem with it, by Ansela on 2008-10-23 19:48:00 UTC Link to this

was not the 'sex education' part, but the fact that this person was encouraging underaged persons to read and write explicit material that could get web authors in trouble if they are caught.

A twenty-five year old encouraging fourteen year olds to write explicit slash just seems wrong to me. Plus the closing comment on the article is kind of disturbing.

        • Ah, true. by Laburnum on 2008-10-23 19:54:00 UTC Link to this

The way I see it, fourteen-year-olds are gonna write that stuff whatever we do, so we might as well make sure they can do it correctly and reduce the number of disturbingly bad stories out there. Actively encouraging them to do it is kind of creepy, though.

          • Re: Ah, true. by Ansela on 2008-10-23 20:06:00 UTC Link to this

If I dug up my fics from when I was fourteen they'd probably be excruciatingly painful, mpreg filled fics where at least one part of the pairing is severely emasculated. I like to think I've grown out of that now, so I can have hope that most fourteen years olds will also do so.

Of course you still have older people writing stories where awesome characters get severely emasculated, even though in canon they are capable of defeating their opponent when their supposedly stronger friend fails against his equally strong enemy.

            • Besides, if the kid's fourteen ... by Laburnum on 2008-10-23 20:16:00 UTC Link to this

... it wouldn't be paedophilia whatever they did. It'd be hebephilia because the kid's post-pubescent. Not that I condone either, but even people who do that deserve to at least be referred to with correct terminology, no?

And, assuming she was telling the truth, veterinarians-in-training writing fics in which a guy has something longer than his body jammed into his intestinal tract and doesn't even pass out. And lunatics writing terrifying things involving utter anatomy fail, creepiness, and rampant misogyny which hurts far less than it should because the portrayal of males is pretty damned unflattering as well. And the utterly eyebreaking one where the author assumed the penis and the prostate were different names for the same organ ...

Welcome to the PPC Board Halloween Costume Party! This will be going on the whole weekend (24-26), so I hope you enjoy.

I hope you wore your costume, because this is a masquerade. I'm not in mine yet, since otherwise it'd be obvious.

    ---------------------------

The (secondary) Board has been decorated in an impressively slapdash way. Orange and black streamers decorate the room, and pumpkins of various sizes litter the floors, waiting to be tripped over. In the center of the room is a table cluttered with bowls of candies. Next to the table is a cooler of sodas and and various bleep drinks.

    • As the party heads toward its ending... by Jaina Solo on 2008-10-25 23:50:00 UTC Link to this

A short brown-haired girl with alert brown eyes strolls in, looking around casually. 'At least it's not a formal event...' she thinks, glad of being able to wear her orange flight-suit instead of some confining gown.

Jaina Solo, Jedi, pilot, (and pseudo-Goddess, of late) wanders aimlessly, looking for someone to talk to. At least, she feels, this is better than Hapes.

      • "Hi there," by Sheryl Nome on 2008-10-25 23:55:00 UTC Link to this

Sheryl grinned at the newcomer, her eyes slightly unfocused, "is that a flight suit you're wearing? I guess that you're a pilot then."

She staggered over to the orange-clad woman and slung a friendly, perhaps too much so, arm over her shoulder. "I like pilots. Wanna get to know each other better?"

        • "Yes, X-Wing pilot, lately of Rogue Squadron." by Jaina Solo on 2008-10-25 23:59:00 UTC Link to this

Jaina blinks at the older woman, and slides out from under her arm. "I guess I arrived a bit late, then..." She wonders if it might have been better not to come here. The young Jedi can foreseee things getting awkward quite rapidly if this persists.

    • Not late... by Uncreative Piper on 2008-10-25 17:58:00 UTC Link to this

      Just fashionably not early.

A girl in a vaguely renaissance-looking green shirt and black leggings walks into the room, fiddling with her belt, which was actually a scarf and ought to be on her head and not her waist. Hanging from the scarf/belt is a case containing a tin whistle. She is absolutely not wearing the same thing she wears to renaissance faires every year, definitely not.

She makes a beeline for the food and descends upon any chocolate she can find, cringing away from any bubble gum or fruity candy.

"There's plenty to go around, I'm sure."

Leaning over her to take some chocolate for himself, he notices the case attached to her scarf/belt.

        "A musician, are you?"

The Piper feels the briefest impulse to reach for her purse, then realizes she doesn't have a purse. "It's something by Blaise, isn't it?"

[OOC: Am I recognizing it right? When I think of "Marquis" and "music" together, this is what comes to mind.]

The Marquis is surprised to find that the Piper knows this, but masks his emotion well as he reaches for another piece of chocolate.

"It's a very useful tune, wouldn't you say?"

                • "Depends on what you're using it for." by Tomato on 2008-10-26 13:30:00 UTC Link to this

The Piper forces herself to stop eating the candy before she gets sick. She still lingers by the snacks, intrigued by the Marquis and a bit unwilling to leave him alone. She wouldn't admit the slight interest in hearing the song again, in hopes of being able to duplicate it. Such a thing was unethical, and she would never dream of it. Really.

"I've heard it can backfire. Have you ever had problems with it?"

    • It is, perhaps, not quite like home. by Felix on 2008-10-25 06:51:00 UTC Link to this

There is a young man here who moves with the alert confidence of someone who has won many battles. His long, uneven brown hair is tied back so as to obscure little of his face and less of his vision. However, the blue-and-green mask he wears covers at least enough of his face on its own.

As our imaginary viewer's eyes travel downward, they pause on a blue cape, a slightly battered breastplate over a gray-green tunic, and a worn sword hanging from the man's belt.

After a few moments spent looking around, Felix nods, steps forward a little, and holds out his hand. Those sensitive to magical or psychic phenomena would see a giant ghostly hand spring out from his own, close gently on a cup of Hot Bleepolate, and carry it back to him; those not so sensitive would simply see the cup flying into Felix's hand. He raises the cup to his mouth, but stops as it hits the mask. His other arm moves up into a facepalm.

"Kind of hard for us to have neighbours," Faris says. "They don't seem that inclined to stick along, for some reason." He grins and pops the second butterscotch into his mouth. "Must be they don't fancy our colours much."

Chani laughs, and holds up a dark brown candy.

"They make beer solid now?" Faris peers at the candy. "I can't decide if that's a waste or an excellent idea. I'd say probably for eating, 'less it's the bad stuff."

Wolfram approached Chani and Faris, grabbing a candy from the bowl and eating it. "If it's human beer I doubt it's safe to drink."

                            • 'Human'? by Faris Scherwiz on 2008-10-25 08:48:00 UTC Link to this

"Well, it's handy that I'm human then, isn't it?" Faris grinned at Wolfram. "And I can tell you Syldra appreciates his share of the beer and other delicacies, too, though a' course he can catch his own, too." He snagged a root beer and glanced at the drinks table to see if they had some proper alcohol. "So, if you don't like this stuff, what do you like?"

Wolfram looked over to the drinks table to see if they had anything decent by his, admittably high, standards. "But I'm not a big drinker."

He- well, as far as anyone can tell- makes for the candy, after a quick look around, and appears to be looking for gold-wrapped coins and possibly just anything that takes his fancy. He's wearing a blue tunic-like shirt, brown trousers and boots, and has a green scarf loosely wrapped around his neck, a bag at his waist, and a sheathed sword. His hair falls just past his shoulders, and is purple.

    • Enter the mazoku... by Wolfram von Bielfielt on 2008-10-25 05:35:00 UTC Link to this

The blond appeared to be a young man, wearing a blue officer's military uniform and a rapier at his side. Green eyes scanned the room and he crossed his arms petulantly while trying to force back the excited grin on his face.

"Hmpf. A human party? Can't say I'm impressed." The boy kicked one of the pumpkins. "What are all these things doing on the floor? This is so unsanitary!"

      • Silly. by Chani on 2008-10-25 06:44:00 UTC Link to this

Chani carefully aimed and lobbed a chocolate at the young man, hitting him in the forehead.

"There's candy, stupid," she snorted, taking aim with a caramel and pegging the blond in the nose.

"A strange Offworld custom," she mumbled to herself through a mouthful of chocolate, "but a good one."

... her nose briefly wrinkling at the papery decor. She ignored it, smoothing her hands down the fabric of her blue dress. Most of the fabric was pulled to gather at the small of her back, where it billowed out dramatically, beautifully, save that it also acted as a dry mop for the dusty floor. Noticing this, she sighed.

"Ah, well," she muttered. "Can clean it later."

Making her way to the centre table, Madame Meru stumbled over a very small pumpkin and proceeded to kick it aside with a scowl. Her hands and forearms were covered by spotless white gloves, and a chunky bangle dangled from one wrist. Her pink and blonde hair was topped by a blue beret the same colour as her dress, and she wore a pair of tan-coloured knee-length heeled boots on her feet. A half-empty can of soda dangled from one hand as she flipped her hair back to reveal a single earring, an iridescent purple gem hanging delicately within a golden rhombus and connected to her ear by a wire so fine it was invisible but for the single bead halfway down it.

For one, she's smarter than London. London would have accepted the 'Mouth to Mouth' excuse Zack gave. Secondly, London views anyone who is poor as animals, so she wouldn't like Cody like that. Thirdly, London is nowhere near as serious as the girl in that story, that's usually Maddie's turf.

                      • Usual spot is a plot hole. by Artic Blade on 2008-10-28 14:54:00 UTC Link to this

When Character Replacements enter the story, they generally kidnap the Character they're replacing and stashing them into a plot hole. I think the plot hole i this story that the real London might be hiding is when Cody is in hospital, and Zack is asleep in the room next to him. Hospitals rarely, if ever, have adjoining rooms, and family or friends have to go home to sleep, no matter what, unless they're in a chair. If she got lost in that plot hole, chances are she's thinking she simply took a wrong turn from Shoe Planet.

Some hospitals/wards might have adjoining rooms. I'm thinking top-flight maternity wards (probably not appropriate here) and specialised children's hospitals. Of course, in America they might be a bit more expensive than they can afford (unless London's paying of course).

People who frequent the 4chan bulletin board. It's a popular location for trolls and jerks, but not everyone there is like that. Every individual board is indicated by one or two letters with a slash either side.

If you value your sanity stay away from /a/. Sunday 5pm Japan time (+9 GMT) is when /m/ should also be avoided, due to a flood of Gundam 00 posts. Zombie event is fun-ish if you like being a zombie, annoying if you're 70 and don't like it, and hell if you're an alt and trying to turn in a quest in an infested town (Booty Bay, I am looking at you).

Invasion, though, is fun and made of win. The gear from turning in necrotic runes (by killing invaders) is pretty good, and you can grab the Argent Dawn tabard again, for a Feat of Strength achievement if nothing else.

Redheads don't tend to be popular with Mary-Sues either. Just look at Ron and Ginny Weasley. Out of the Harry Potter characters, those two are the ones most consistant in their dislike of Mary-Sues. I don't think there's enough redheads in other fandoms for me to prove this, but it's a possibility.

          • The problem with red hair is... by Lily Winterwood on 2008-10-29 00:11:00 UTC Link to this

A lot of Mary Sues like that color. After all, the genes that cause red hair are perhaps the most recessive of all other hair-color genes. For 'Sues that seems to be the opposite. Many are blondes or redheads, with an occasional Goth/Emo black-haired Sue.

But it might work...Lori is a redhead, according to my Permission post on LJ. There's no love lost between her and Mary Sues.

          • Maybe not... by Ansela on 2008-10-28 17:52:00 UTC Link to this

Abarai Renji and Kurosaki Ichigo from Bleach seem to both be rather affected by Sues. Sasori from Naruto also tends not to object to Mary Sues within Akatsuki, as far as I have seen. In fact sometimes he's even paired with them (and how that works, since by the time of Akatsuki he's turned himself into a puppet, I have no idea).

How do the rest of the Weasley family take to Sues? I stay clear of the Harry Potter fandom these days, so I don't know the answer to that one.

More like dialysis. Could be complicated. Fun, but complicated.

I'd like to see some kind of chemical neutralization, myself. Something one could inject into the Sue's bloodstream that would bond with the Glitter and render it ineffective. I know that ex-Sues sometimes take doses of Anti-Lustin... perhaps that's a start.

D'you suppose they would go through Glitter withdrawal? I can only assume it'd madly addictive. They would have to go through therapy and reconditioning, in any case, as our ex-Sues (again) testify.

Incidentally, the Department of Fictional Psychology would love to team up with the DMSE&R on some of these issues. {= )

          • Cool. by Lily Winterwood on 2008-10-29 00:05:00 UTC Link to this

I should make Lori and Bill try out a psychology mission with some people from FicPsych, then?

And I think Glitter sounds like illicit drugs like crack cocaine and heroin, too. They are found in the bloodstream, after all. Someone should write a fic about an ex-Sue dealing with Glitter withdrawal.

            • Hmmm. by Neshomeh on 2008-10-29 01:03:00 UTC Link to this

Maybe they could do studies on the addictive properties of Glitter. And I'm sure FicPsych has records about ex-Sues, who have had to recover without the aid of fancy drugs or machines. How did they do it? Is it that they've de-Glittered themselves, or that they've just built up a tolerance for it through sheer force of will? Is Glitter something produced in the bodies of Sues, or do they channel it into themselves from outside sources, like Dust?

              So many questions. O.o

As for FicPsych personnel, the only one I have exclusive control over is Jenni Robinson. I've written for Freedenberg and the Kudzu, but they're free for general use. The only problem is that I'm terrible as a co-writer. I'm barely making progress with my own stuff as it is.

I like the idea of neutralization - at least, my Nice side does. My Assassin Agent side is disgusted, but she can use her daggers anyway.

    • *Spock voice* Fascinating. by Neshomeh on 2008-10-28 03:25:00 UTC Link to this

I have to say I really like this idea and its execution. I don't know if I said that clearly before.

However, as a PPCer and an English major and an editor-in-training--that is, as someone specifically trained to spot plotholes and other inconsistencies--I have to point out a few issues I find in your experiment. First of all, the classifications could be punched up a little bit. Pseudolatin is the done thing, of course, but the closer you get to the genuine article, the better. For example, Humanis perfectis should probably be Homo perfectis. Also, for weird classifications, you could follow the example of plant classification and use modifiers like "var." for "variant" (Puella moderna var. prophesida) and "type 1 x type 2" for such combinations as Sidhia tolkienii x uncanonicus fantasylandia. Also, your Angsty!Goth!Sue could probably be classified as an Emo!Sue, if my understanding is correct.

Second of all, I wonder if the source of the Glitter affects the type of Sue. That is, you drew Glitter from several sources of various types and used the combination to produce a variety of different types in the dummy. What if you drew Glitter from only one source, or one type of source, and increased the levels in the dummy with that?

      Third, wraiths have blood? O.o

I mean these points only in a spirit of advancing science, so I hope you'll take them in the same spirit. {= )

But yeah, good luck! Do your best! I've got this fantasy/satire/parody adventure story vaguely planned out and it's either going to be in first person or in diary form. The plot is so vaguely defined that I should be able to drag it out for 50 000 words. :D

Which is why I'm leaning towards third person now, but from the viewpoint of this one character. Or maybe I'll switch between characters. I dunno. The story has changed it's purpose a lot in the last 24 hours.

Yeah, you know what I mean. (I hope?) NaNoWriMo is upon us once again! (Cue the dramatic music?) For everyone who hasn't been bitten yet, National Novel Writing Month is where everyone with a pen and paper, or a laptop, and a basic masochistic need to write-- but not just write. No, that would be too mundane for us. NaNo is when you take the month of November (thirty days, by the way) and try to write 50,000 words in it, a novel in the genre of your choice.

Now, this might sound crazy to some.

But this is the PPC! I'll admit that when I saw the topic "Artic's Game of the Month," my first thought was "Poke, prod, taunt, and generally bother NaNo participants until they completely lose it?"

What're y'all doing for NaNo? What are your strategies this year? (Especially for shutting off the Inner Editor; do I err in guessing that the average Agent's biggest problem is ignoring said voice?) Have you ever won? And so on, and so forth.

(I'm taking two and a half characters I love and throwing them into a semi-Steampunk universe along the lines of Thirty Years War status, but... with the whole world involved. I figure this will give me a lot more opportunity to actually win, because both times I tried to write a set out, planned plot, I ran out of words and ideas too quickly. This time, I've only given myself exceedingly vague plot guidelines, in hopes that I'll be able to actually finish the damned line this year. >_>)

Someone else continued posting as anon, eventually turning into a bad enough troll that Ugly Things were done to get her to leave. Bjam posted not long after that to point out that she had made the first couple anon posts.

Anyways, your style reminds me a lot of what she did, so I was wondering if you were her doing it over again. Apparently not.

So, yeah, I'm Kyle. Oh, also, does anyone know how I can get in contact with the people in charge of the movie? I know this is rather late, but I have to take whatever internet access I can get at the moment. So, yes. Welcomes. Here, have a bag of pebbles and a Random Shiny Object.

As for the Movie- I happen to be one of the co-ordinators, so I guess I'd be someone to talk to about it- yes, there are open roles available, unless they've been filled while I was away. I get the impression that you're of the male persuasion, so we have Redd, Sparky and Denny for you to take a bash at, if you'd like to. The deadline is tomorrow, but you are a very, very latecomer, so I expect we could make an exception if our sound tech can make do without those lines for a short while longer.

Fair point, but I more meant like in that unlike some other events it seemed more deliberately humourous, maybe parodic. Pretty much everything in the PPC has at least some level of humour to it, but I more meant that I thought the Ypur thing wasn't supposed to be taken as a real thing, just some random fun or something. It was something like that.

My PPC Agents Eledhwen and Christianne's minis (Lucy Pevenzi, Locy, Mara Labinigi, and Ithillien) give you a nice, fiery, painful mini-glomp.

My PPC DMSE&R scientists Lori Starrett and Bill Fallis bestow unto you a graduated cylinder. It's very handy in Mary Sue experiments, and has a graduation cap. Oh, and it measures fluids. *cough think clean thoughts cough*

Welcome to the PPC. You might want to go visit Medical for those mini-glomp injuries now. *waves hand cheerfully*

All of these seem fairly interesting. Glitter decrease/withdrawal could be tied into the same experiment though. Now, I may be out of the loop here since I was last at the PPC in something like 2005, but I'd think it'd be interesting to see an experiment on what kind of conditions Sues can comfortably exist in, the strength of their immune system (gradually introducing them to more serious diseases to see how long it is until they recover, maybe?), maybe testing if they recover from injuries at a faster rate than normal people? Dissecting Sues and trying to get genetic samples to see how biologically/genetically similar to actual humans they are would definitely be something to check out, but I get the feeling you don't want to do that right away.

Suvian Evolution should be a long-term project, then. Because if we can change a Sue-colony (theoretically speaking)'s environment, maybe they will follow natural selection until only Canon-compliant OCs like boz4PM's Penny Baker remain.

            Interesting theories, aye?

            • That could actually work really well by kgarrett on 2008-10-30 00:32:00 UTC Link to this

First it could start out as just research to find out more about how Sues work/how to kill them more easily/how close to "human" they are (since they're humanOID, but obviously not human), and the like, and then go on to that eventually? Sounds interesting, if a *really* long-term project. And no problem, glad you like the idea.

              • Oh! On that thought! by kgarrett on 2008-10-30 00:36:00 UTC Link to this

What about the Sue Factories? If there are any still around, especially considering they're hostile to the PPC, we could actually take one over and use it to create/breed Sues specifically for the experiments. That way we wouldn't have to worry about where the test subjects are coming from, the Factories get karma for the '08 invasion in the form of a military attack, and assassins don't start asking questions about why they're suddenly taking Sues alive.

                • Fascinating idea. by Lily Winterwood on 2008-10-31 00:42:00 UTC Link to this

You might want to present it to the Permission Givers, though. That idea might need more than just little ol' DMSE&R involved.

You're right. Of course, before that happens I'm focusing on getting permission to have agents and do missions (I wonder, does the fact that I've technically been here before negate the "be here for a month" requirement?). :P But yeah, a full scale military-style assault on a Factory would need more than, no offense, a few scientists. And probably permission due to the huge size of the assault and plot-changing nature of it.

Realistically, it'd take the PPC quite a while to even FIND another one of the League's Sue factories, I think, let alone to mobilize for a full on attack. We're assassins, not soldiers, after all. And at the moment those experiments are just mere ideas in the back of some lab techs' heads, it'd be a while down the road, especially since they've already got other labs to do.

My PPC Agent Eledhwen Elerossiel was captured by a Mary Sue Factory and cloned. After that, she fled the Factory to join the PPC to kill her clone and destroy the Factory.

Yes, convenient...I know. But your other points were true.

That still means most agents don't know where they are. They could be anywhere in the multiverse, after all, though her telling the Flowers about that one could be a good hook assuming the people running that factory haven't picked up and moved it somewhere else by now.

(and I apologise profusely for that remark, but the Board's so wide now that I can't see a thing further down) if you're planning an assault on a Mary-Sue Factory, I think you should hold off for a while, like you're planning. We've already had several crises this year- the Double Whammy Invasion of Macroviruses and Mary Sues, a Canon Crisis back in July/August with the Robecca Exorcism, and the Ypur Invasion- and we could do with a break and some nice, regular missions.

Once everyone's rested, though, I'm sure they'd be ready to take on a Sue Factory- for revenge, if nothing else. We lost over a thousand agents to the viruses and Sues. You have my Agents standing by for whenever the assault begins.

Oh, and in reply to the remark about the Agents not being soldiers... most of them may not have any formal training, but as they demonstrated in the invasion, they can fight as well as most regular armies, and probably better than some. In addition, they have access to all kinds of weapons and defence systems that are far beyond what World One can provide.

                                  • Wait, what? by kgarrett on 2008-10-31 21:24:00 UTC Link to this

OVER ONE THOUSAND AGENTS?! Holy shit! O_o Yeah though, I didn't intend on starting anything about an assault on a factory for quite a while, both to let the PPC recover and for me to get experience and stuff, though I could lead up to the idea in implications and stuff. It'd be a real hard thing to pull off. Glad to hear you're interested though.

As for the Agents thing, I didn't SEE the invasion, so I don't know how well everyone fought. Still, you have a good point, but we're still not exactly an army, and a lot of our agents aren't that used to working as such a huge force, though some of the better ones could be considered pretty much special forces soldiers. And there IS the sheer combat experience and the fact that we've got weapons and technology from all the multiverse at our disposal. And sheer numbers, heh.

The problem would be, if a Factory ever was located and assaulted, in the planning. A spontaneous defence of HQ is one thing. A planned, premeditated attack on a possibly well-defended location is a completely different kettle of fish.

Leaders would have to be selected, plans would have to be made and Agents might need to be reminded of the value of working with people other than their regular partners.

There's also the fact that the Factories might actually be prepared for all out ground assaults. It might be necessary to locate Agents with training in aerial combat vehicles, whether World One or canon. I'd imagine that very few Mary Sues would be able to stand up to a Macross-verse Valkyrie or a Gundam-verse Mobile Suit (from any of the multiple continuities). Hell, even an A-10 Thunderbolt could do the trick.

It seems like a lot of planning, and not something that just one person should take on. Hell, just the planning alone is probably above most Agents capabilities. Maybe kidnapping a character replacement of a tactical forecaster such as Sumeragi Li Noriega might be useful.

All that aside, my Agents would be perfectly willing to go out there and join in with an assault if it ever happened.

                                    • Sorry for the late reply, I've been busy. by kgarrett on 2008-11-01 01:36:00 UTC Link to this

It'd definitely be difficult; as you said, it'd take a really long time of preparation and a lot of information on the headquarters, which would probably have defenses on it to make a full on ground attack as difficult as possible. Presumably the PPC's been weakened at least a bit by the last attack too, and considering we'd lose a LOT of good men and women on such an assault it'd be a good reason to want to hold back on it. As for who was in charge I was assuming a Flower would be in command of the overall operation, if not on the battlefield personally.

I'd actually be surprised if the factory WASN'T prepared/heavily defended. If there were a way to portal directly into the factory we could bypass the majority of defenses, but I can still see where vehicles could be needed. Especially since the Sues will have the advantage, being on the defensive and literally being able to MAKE their own reenforcements whereas we'd have to portal them in. It'd be a bloodbath no matter who won. In story we could say the Flowers were discussing a plan or something, but we'd still need to actually make said plan up.

Could be an excuse for why it takes so long for the attack to happen; even if we were ready (and we're not at the moment), we're still planning and trying to mobilize and figure out how to get it to work. No point in a suicide attack after all. Maybe send in some agents to locate the factory and do some basic recon? And once the actual attack comes a diversionary assault would come in handy, if just long enough for strike teams to get through and take out vital targets that allow the rest of the attack to go more smoothly.

                                • Oh, that's simple. by Lily Winterwood on 2008-10-31 01:45:00 UTC Link to this

This, along with the constantly downward-moving front page, is a feature, not a flaw. The PPC moves on, and this way we can't have the occasional fight that breaks out constantly popping up to the top. If something is important/really fun, it gets a new thread when the old one drops off the page, or it gets archived. So don't save the link -- save what you've said.

Honestly my only real worries about the permission thing are the technicalities with the rules and the fact that I have some issues with some of my ideas, more writer's block than anything, so it'd actually be a good way to fine-tune the concepts I have. Can't be as easy as it looks though. Anyway, all I was saying is I want to get that out of the way first, especially since "massive PPC assault on a heavily-defended Sue factory" isn't something I wanna do until I've gotten my feet wet. :P

...is that I think of a beginning, and then I skip to the end. Right now I can see our current research eventually evolving into establishing a Sue-Colony with a carefully-controlled environment, done for the sake of "Project Suvian Evolution".

*sighs and shakes head* I should be studying methods of lowering Glitter levels.

                • Heh, good point by kgarrett on 2008-10-30 00:39:00 UTC Link to this

Yeah, the colony idea would be really far off. That's more an end result of the research than something we go for now. Considering the vote seems to be for glitter levels though, that should be focused on first anyhow. They're all interesting things to look into though.

    • Re: by WikiMaster on 2008-10-29 12:58:00 UTC Link to this

The last two (Glitter Withrawal and Glitter Reduction) can be combined, I think. I'm voting for both! Genetically modified Vampire bats, you'll have your Crowning Moment of Awesome yet!

    • I think one of the last two by Sedri on 2008-10-29 06:12:00 UTC Link to this

Better to follow on from where you already were and finish it than start something new. Besides, I want to see a Sue stabbed with a syringe, or a Personality Dialysis. Glitter withdrawal's fun, too.

Of course, Sue dissection is the most fun, but save that for next time. Something to look forward to.

I've asked the person I based Lori off of. She thinks that she would like to do Glitter Reduction and then Glitter Withdrawal. And since most of you agree...

Glitter Reduction methods it is! Here's our choices:
Personality Dialysis (let's make it rapid and without the coma...might as well torture a few Sues in the name of science...)
Genetically Modified Vampire Bats (where would we get them?)
            Antibody-G(litter)
Red Dwarf hair and other various body parts (think clean thoughts for Galadriel's sanity, please!)
            Syringe with Glitter filter
            Exorcism

Shall we test them all out, hmm? And we'll need test subjects. *laughs evilly* If we do Personality Dialysis, I'd love to test it out on Ebony Whatsherface from My Immortal. As revenge, you know?

    1. You're a pregnant Pyro with morning sickness and you get a mission into a brain-burning Suefic. How do you react?

      2. What is a good, portable RL tool for hacking limbs off a moving target with one slice?
    • No expertise on #1, but I'll give 2 a shot... by Techno-Dann on 2008-10-30 07:00:00 UTC Link to this

A properly sharp katana will go through an unarmored limb relatively easy. So will most similar swords - a cavalry saber, for example. A machete will provide similar results, but requires more effort. More classical medieval swords were designed for armor piercing, thus they have blunter edges and won't penetrate flesh as easily. They'll still do the job given enough strength.

If you're feeling a bit ludicrous, chainsaws are an option worth considering...

      1. I'm no pregnancy expert, but how far along is the Pyro? That might effect the degree of the morning sickness and consequences thereof. "Go burn something" would be my answer though, whether the Sue or HQ.

In April 2003, a young woman named Kaitlyn joined the PPC Board. She's been here ever since, mostly lurking in the background.

In September of that same year, a young man named Huinesoron arrived on the Board, and for some reason rapidly became rather prominent. Even before that, Kaitlyn had noticed him...

Later on (quite a while later) their respective Agents, Constance Sims and Dafydd Illian met up in HQ, and began a rather, well, scary relationship. This was mirrored by...

You know what? I'm going to skip to the end.

    Aren't we cute?

On the 28th October 2008 AD/HST, at 11 am, Kaitlyn and Huinesoron were married in the Atlanta Georgia LDS temple. And were VERY CUTE.

At this point we were going to link you to the story of Dafydd and Constance's wedding, which took place back in July 2006, but unfortunately we ran out of time to write it. It was very sad. So, watch this space -- but don't hold your collective breath, or your collective face will be very collective blue. Collectively.
