I'm trying to write the missing piece of Agent Trojie's backstory; her year of insanity during 2006. I need a few volunteers for brief (one or two line) cameos. They will be returned unharmed; the worst that will happen to them is they'll be fed freshly-baked scones ...
I'd rather use actual Agents than make up a few bit characters, is all, but I'm not sure who has Agents that were actually around in 2006, so any volunteers would be really appreciated.

Name: Agent Laurel
Age: Unknown, but guessed to be in her twenties.
Height: 5'2"
Hair Color: Depends on the day
Eyes: Usually green
Command Centre: Labyrinth, and on-call for Doctor Who and historical fiction dealing with English and early American history.
Distinguishing Features/Habits: Changes her hair color more than most people change their clothes; adopted two Nuzgul, Cleese and Chapman, and has a pet wolverine, Stinker; favorite method of dispatching 'Sues is death by pokey (much, much more agonizing than it sounds); is occasionally heard muttering about Agent Seven and their army of killer cats; always carries a Punjab lasso, a spork, and a dull paring knife. -

Tadkeeta was recruited into Floaters (with Agent Tira) through March, and then transferred to DoGA with T'Zar. She was a teenager until May, when she experienced six years on the Hyperaccelerated Planet and came back a tough twentysomething. She took a few weeks to adjust the PPC again. -

If they're being used as projectiles, as I read somewhere above, that's a whole other story. Cameo might try to give chase with shiny pointies, but Nume should be able to stop her, being much the larger of the two and having lots of practice.
Jenni would probably still say thank you, even if it was thrown at her head. 'Course, there would be irony to it.

Multiple cases of rape turning to love.
Illogic (if they're as smart as humans, wouldn't it come under anti-slavery laws if you're trying to keep them as pets? If Naruto's a girl now, why are they still calling him "he" even though he's pregnant and wearing frilly dresses? This is the furry Japanese equivalent of Little Miss Mary!)

According to Wikipedia, rutting only happens in antlered members of the ungulate family (deer, sheep, antelope etc). Naruto seems to be some kind of human/cat/kyubi hybrid.
Herm!Naruto is, ugh! He's a male in canon(or Sai would have said something already)and so he should stay that way in fanfiction. Unless you're writing a genderswap AU that is. Or he's in his Sexy Jutsu form.
It says that Iruka is a school teacher, so maybe the author got suitcase and briefcase mixed up somehow. It makes an amusing mental image though.
Drowning works well for Naruto and Sasuke, as you suggested before. I don't know about the other characters though, since there's not enough of them in the first chapter to tell.
Pre-timeskip Sakura was pretty strong, if you count the fillers as canon. Before Sasuke left she ripped the mast off a boat and used it as a weapon. -

But no, I don't think prising full-sized humans out of a kitten's biologically implausible orifices is the way to go. That's too disgusting even for me.
We might want to save Gaara and Rock Lee's offspring as well - raccoon/frog/human hybrids would make some interesting playmates for Moses Taggson ... -
Wait! What? by
on 2008-08-22 21:34:00 UTC
Link to this
He/she/it made Lee into a frog hybrid? WTF!?!? Actually, I could probably see that given how he dresses in canon. Let's try that again.
Ahem.
They made Lee be submissive to GAARA? Has this person watched the series/read the manga at all? I find it hard to believe that they have.
I have nothing against the Gaara/Lee pairing at all, when they are both human and are in an equal relationship not the messed up dom-rapes-sub-and-sub-isn't-allowed-to-complain parody that is presented here.
Let me guess at other pairings in this. Temari/Shikamaru and Neji/Tenten (or Neji/Shikamaru and Temari/Tenten if there's no such thing as a het pairing in this). Kiba/Hinata, Asuma/Kurenai, Kakashi/Iruka, Tsunade/Jiraiya. Am I right? -
Kakashi/Iruka and Temari/Shikamaru, yes. by
on 2008-08-22 21:50:00 UTC

Actually the other was Cat!Neji abusing Mouse!Hinata (if their fathers were twin brothers, wouldn't that make them half-siblings rather than just cousins? Eeh), and apparently Sakura/everyone according to the character-bashing bits.
So, which should be exorcised and which are character replacements, and of the character replacements, which should be killed and which should be adopted? Naruto-thing and Sasuke-thing need to die. Barbecue time? I think the raccoon-thing and tadpole-thing that appear at the end could be adopted, and I think Naruto-thing is pregnant at the end so an emergency in vitro transportation may be necessary (unless Drake's willing to carry it for a while ... well, Skyfire and Naomi probably wouldn't be). -

Sorry, the desk isn't enough this time.
I think in family terms they would be counted as cousins, but genetically they would be half-siblings. You'd have to ask someone who knows more about biology/genetics though. Still, how do you get a cat and a mouse hybrid from that close a genetic relation? Fandom is split about it though, I think. I normally stay well away from Hyugacest (and Uchihacest and Sandcest) fics though, so I wouldn't know. However you look at it, they're too closely related for me, personally, not to be squicked. -
Indeed. by
on 2008-08-23 00:09:00 UTC

As they said in Kit and Kay Boodle (a weird but very funny in the "Plan Nine from Outer Space"-type way furry webcomic): "How does a feline explain having a lupine father?"
"The same way a murine daughter explains having a canine mother! You don't! You don't have to explain being furry, you just go with it!"
Incest doesn't bother me so much as long as they acknowledge that it IS incest, at least if the characters are aware they're related. Just completely disregarding the fact annoys me.
So, which do you think would be character replacements and which are just in dire need of exorcism and reconstructive surgery? -

Iruka seems to be as concerned about Naruto as he is in canon. Well, except for leaving him to be 'mated' to Sasuke against his will that is. Kakashi seems to be mostly in character as well.
I haven't read far enough to get a feel for other characters yet. Kurenai seems to mostly be in character though, but she hasn't appeared much. -

that, barring the mention of Kakashi's father (canonically dead long before the start of the series), it's post time-skip. Naruto's age is set at sixteen at several points, Sai is around (which puts it post Gaara Rescue) and Asuma is there (which puts it before the fight with Hidan and Kakuzu).

I took care of a High School AU that featured characters from different times (for example, one was canonically dead when another was a few years old). When the author-wraith was exorcised and the canon snapped back, the series basically restarted and the characters were returned to how they would be at that point.
Or you could separately neuralyze each character and drop each back into the canon universe at the spot their characterization most closely matches. That would take quite a long time, of course. -

I don't know this canon, I freely admit, but I have to say you really should get in-vitro transportation, or contact Doc Fitz to transport the baby into Medical. I very much doubt that Upstairs will take a lenient view of Mpreg, even in a good cause, so Drake is right out, and it's usually a good idea for the baby to be moved into a mother of its own species...
I guess Medical have artifical wombs or something for babies that need it. I know I've heard of a case where it happened before... -

The pink rabbit which is ostensibly Sakura doesn't do much except punch Naruto-kitten-thing and get killed by Sasuke-kitten-thing, but anything which is violent towards these creepy Stu things is probably on our side. It would have to be neutered and probably renamed, but maybe it could be rehabilitated?

As for killing them ... not sure. Since three of the agents getting rid of them are natural carnivores, there's an obvious answer for disposing of the bodies. Carnivore meat is apparently unpleasantly stringy and bitter, but Naruto-kitty-thing would probably taste okay because of its high sugar content (how else do you explain it secreting "honey"?)

...and in my trust-me-I'm-not-a-doctor-type 'professional opinion', I don't think it'd make a good mission. There isn't an appalling part. It's all just ... flatlining appalling.

Looking at the page delineating what the PPC is on the Wiki, I've been thinking that it could do with expanding on.. It's looking a bit bare :)
So, what IS the PPC? What do we need to say to explain our eclectic, esoteric and eldritch activities? Ideas? -
Depends on the interpretation by
on 2008-08-22 07:38:00 UTC
Link to this
For example, we could be the PPC - a collection of people who strive to make use of a satirical sense of humour to define what is 'Acceptable' and what isn't in the world of Fanfiction writing. To do this, we make stories that parody the cliches of writing, using a pre-existing text as our basis.
Or, otherwise, the PPC is an organisation of sentient beings who are controlled to take a stand against the stock character of the 'Mary Sue'
That's my definition anyways.

Requesting help... by
on 2008-08-22 16:57:00 UTC
Link to this
We got into a good MSN chat, and somehow came up with the idea of writing a story based on fantasy cliches, where most of the names are reversals of ordinary words and names. The working title is "Fantasy By Numbers (And Some Backwards Names)". The cast so far is as follows, listed in order of creation:
Samoht, the Generic Desert Rider extra
Ardnassac, the bard who shows up to deliver an ancient song with convenient clues
Eissac, the guard escorting Our Heroes through the woodland fortress
Ennaxor, the Big Bad's underling who kicks Our Hero's ass in about Chapter Three, then gets killed ignominiously around Chapter Ten
Xela, the demoness whose wiles leave her beheaded
Yxor, the Big Bad who has taken control of the king
Newlir, the Standard Elf Guy who is Teh Awsum with a bow
Tarp, the local yokel and standard Hairy-Footed Short Thing
Gnik, the good king
Elcycib, the friendly big-bosomed tavern wench
Oreh the Mighty, the Hero
Dren the Weedy, the main sidekick
Krod, the ogre with bad timing and worse footwork
Resol, the very bad assassin
Ome the Androgynous (and angsty)
They live in the land of Onnudi.
We also have a few quotes from the as yet unwritten story.
"What shall we call ourselves?" "Why not Dnabeht?" "Dnabeht, Ardnassac? Why a silly name like that?" "It seemed to fit the theme." "What theme?" "You know what? Forget it. Would 'Oreh's Group' work?" "BRILLIANT!" "...*sigh*"
"Here. My song. I was told to learn this while I was becoming a bard. It has never been appropriate until now, I've never until now been able to sing it, and you're going to analyse the words and ignore my talent entirely, so let's get it over with?"
"Oh, I am so depressed. My mum died after living a long and happy life, warm in her bed, with those she loved around her..." "Oh, Ome, shut up. You got the house." "But the house...it is a fount of tragedy and despair..." "If you don't want it, I'll take it..." "*hastily* No, Resol, that house is *my* despair-filled burden, I cannot lay it upon you."
"Krod's pants itch." "Why?" "Krod wiped Krod's rear with funny-looking leaves. Krod can feel swellings." All:*shudder* "*sarcastically* Krod should make sure not to do that next time then." "There will be next time?" "Yes, seeing as you never pay attention when we point out poison ivy." -

Protect from heat, impact, electrical shock, and warp zones."
If you unwrap it (carefully) you'll find a case of 12 petards. Have fun hoisting Sues! -

Deryn came in first, humming something or other that didn't really go with the music playing at the moment. This didn't seem to bother her, however, as she'd spotted the food and would probably have gone for it if Leas hadn't grabbed her collar with the hand not holding the present. "Greet the birthday girl first," he told her firmly.
Deryn rolled her eyes. "Okay, okay," she said. "You see her anywhere?"
"You've got your own eyes," Leas pointed out, but looked anyway. "Ah, there she is! Cassie!" he called, waving and trying to subtly nudge Deryn in a Cassie-wards direction. -

"Oh, hi!" she called back, heading over to them. "So how are you two getting on?"

"The missions we've been getting have been all right so far- touch wood-" he knocked on the table- "and the Minis haven't destroyed too much lately. A dedicated corner was definitely a good idea." He paused, and gave Cassie something of a worried look. "Er, you know we're not… like that, don't you?"
Deryn looked up from dithering over the jelly beans and poked him. "Well, you can't blame people, we didn't get out that much back when," she said. "And, well…" She shrugged, and grinned at Plat. "I've met him. Don't think Leas has. Good to see you again!"
"Pleasure to meet you," Leas said, offering a hand to Plat. "Oh, and-" He held out the present to Cassie. "It's not dangerous, I promise," he said, and added as Deryn launched into Happy Birthday (except in German), "though Deryn's singing might be."
(I've got a question… I was going through a couple of missions written by a guy I knew on a board separate to the PPC Board, and thinking about putting up pages for the Agents, I wondered about names- one's all right, I think, but the other's another Tyler. Not sure quite what to do there. I'd like to hear your thoughts, if that's all right.) -

"Thanks very much. I do know you're not like me and Plat-" She rolled her eyes as Plat kissed her on the cheek and dashed off. "Probably wants to check his Pokemon aren't causing any trouble. And don't worry about the singing. I have a little sister who's convinced she's the next Beyonce and a brother who wants to be a rapper. Makes a bloody racket when they're both trying to perform."
She shrugged. "At least I get to enjoy myself here."
(Just_theDoctor wrote an Agent Tyler just after I wrote mine. We agreed that they'd be distinguished by appearance and name. My Tyler's a very pale man with white hair, who looks like he's in his early thirties and has no surname. He runs the Makes-Things Fund For Abused Technology, or MTFFAT. The Doc's Tyler is a 16-year-old with blond hair, who has the surname Reynolds and works in the Department of Implausible Crossovers.) -

"Hey, there're worse songs I could pull out," Deryn pointed out, handing Leas a plate. "Not while the music's on, though, and not while it's your birthday. It'd be a shame to ruin that."
(Okay. I just wonder about the arrangements for the page names, since this Tyler doesn't seem to have a last name. He's pretty distinctive, though- got turned into a Pak- Nixen's Known Space verse, apparently; I'm not personally familiar with it- and Medical couldn't reverse it, so I doubt anyone'd mistake them on sight.) -

"Just don't do it with your mouth full," Leas muttered, and followed Deryn out to the dance area- after she'd poked her tongue out at him, of course. -

ps. Fynn informs me that it is not within the PPC etiquette to give Sues as gifts, so I apologise in advance to any hardline PPCers I may have offended. -

Georgia happily skipped into the Large Auditorium, a chocolate cake in her hands. "Happy Birthday, Cassie! Where do I put this?"
Behind her, Kumori followed at a more sedate pace. This was partly due to the fact that she would never be caught skipping anywhere but mostly due to the huge, lavender bush and pot plant in her arms. Her muffled voice was heard, "And where the hell do I put this?" -

where a goodly and decidedly eclectic array of gifts were displayed. You can just pop them on here, if you like... er, hi, Kumori..." She hastily checked for any C*l*br**n-reading Agents nearby and added, "Maybe you could put those plants round behind with the polar bear? I'm not sure who else is here, and I don't want anyone to start having flashbacks." She neglected to mention that while she loved the scent of lavender, she was also none too fond of the colour.

"Ah, I get it," Kumori smirked, "Wusses. Still don't get why a flower or a colour sends them into hysterics and I read the MST!" She set the lavender down behind the bear as instructed and headed over to the food, "I almost hope you're serving vanilla icecream."
Georgia smiled weakly, "Happy Birthday, Cass. I'm gonna go keep an eye on her before she gets in a fight!" That said, she chased after her partner. -
Cassie nodded at Georgia. "Good idea." by

She wasn't too pleased at the mention of vanilla ice-cream, but shrugged. She knew for a fact she'd instructed the others specifically not to bring any along.
Picking up a Sonic Screwdriver and sipping it appreciatively, she wandered around the auditorium, looking for people she knew. -

Plot idea for a collaborative project by
on 2008-08-24 00:26:00 UTC
Link to this
I don't feel comfortable asking for any sort of free reign in writing, so I'm just throwing this idea out as an idea for a collaborative project. Not sure if something similar has been done (casual browse through the Wiki doesn't show anything).
Anyway, let's say somebody (was thinking a rogue agent, but it can be whatever) shows up with a hijacked TARDIS (with the original owner left bound but otherwise unharmed in some easily located area, all the tracking machinery on it disabled, and the computer wired to intercept all mission communications) and starts interfering with the other agents' missions with the intent to capture (as opposed to kill) as many Mary Sues as possible (including the subversion of at least one factory). The idea behind kidnapping all of them (which is told to the organization in an attempt to get some cooperation) is for research into a potential but controversial solution to purify and seal off the entire multiverse from external tampering.
The solution in question is based around stolen Genesis technology from the Star Trek universe, with the projected end result being the "Retbomb". The Retbomb (which would be featured in a small scale test on a particularly contaminated but largely uncared about universe... probably Manos: The Hands of Fate or something) works by resetting every universe back to their original starting points before external tampering, but has the disagreeable side effect of also diverting all the PPC agents, equipment, and such back to their original canon universes (if not outright erasing them if they have no particular source) and erasing all memories of having traveled outside of their home universes. Obviously, this would not mesh well with the survival instincts of the PPC and would also have too many potentially negative side effects to be something they'd approve of and would result in a three way war between the PPC, League of Mary Sues, and this third entity.
Any thoughts? I wanted to throw this idea out to see if anybody likes it. I have some ideas for characters and such, but I wanted to first make sure that nothing like this had been done before (I can't find anything all that similar at the moment) and also that it would be something people would like to partake in. -
I can see this being a really fascinating idea, but... by
on 2008-08-24 09:42:00 UTC
Link to this
I think the others are right, y'know. This year we've had the Macrovirus Invasion in March, the Mary-Sues Invasion in April running on from that, the Robecca exorcism in Narnia in July, and the spambot/Ypur Invasion a few days ago which resulted in us switching Boards.
We really don't need any more emergencies, major threats or full-out wars. The Catastrophe Theory adherents are already going to be going berserk and waving placards about Doom and the End being Near. If you want to see the other emergencies we've had, the Wiki page "PPC Emergencies" will tell you everything.
Not to mention that HQ, while back to normal business, suffered a drastic loss of agents during the first two Invasions this year and therefore probably would struggle to cope with another war.
And as a final point against carryng this idea out right now (I'm not saying "Forget it, we'll never do this", just "Hold back and wait"), a few months ago we were requested by hS to remember that the purpose of the PPC is entertainment, not continually taking down the big guns. I believe his metaphor was along the lines of "It's very satisfying taking down a Death Star, but while you're doing that there's a thousand TIE fighters on your tail".
I'd suggest taking on a few regular missions- exorcising slashwraiths from Legolas and Aragorn or killing off another twin sister of Harry Potter or something- before we have to deal with yet another problem that pulls us all off regular duty.
On the other hand, I do think this sounds like an idea with a lot of potential and I would be happy to join in with it. I am also curious as to where the Flowers would go, as their original world no longer exists. -
I think it would be a legitimate threat, but by

The actual emergency aspect of it could just be kept on hold for a while, with time spent on developing the involved characters, working out the finer details, etc. Wouldn't want to just start this without a clear plan of how to work everything out.

Jay seemed so sad and frustrated until Rhus showed up.
And I also note that Jay and Acy's little argument in one of the missions in the TOS (I think it was the Aria one) that ended up in the two being seperated on different sides of the Bridge for a night was pretty sad, too.
These aren't really tearjerking, but they're pretty sad. -

Looks like it's missing, all right.
It was that bad. I don't even know much about Full Metal Alchemist, and it was blatantly, obviously, horribly bad. Songfic, too, by the way.
Since I still had it up on my screen, here's the first couple of sentences:
Sophie walked into the office. In her crisp blue uniform with the Uniform Skirt and a pair of blue heels. Sophie Jennifer Witmor. She was a solider and a girl, at only age 17. She was a little to mature for her age, and she hated it. Everyone liked her for her looks, they never let her do anything!
Yeah. And that's just the start. She's a lieutenant, by the way. One who flouts regulations and insults superior officers ... hell, knocks down superior officers ... but seems to avoid the court-martial that should naturally follow. We've got world-class Sueage here ... and she took it down. :( Where's the fun in that? -

Moderators and administrators... by
on 2008-08-26 23:17:00 UTC
Link to this
There was one thing I didn't mention in my post over on the alternative board concerning dealing with the spam-bot: The yourwebapps.com people will give control of an admin-less forum to someone who asks for it. This omission was deliberate - spam-bots are annoying. Spam-bots with admin powers would murder this place faster than you or I could blink.
As it stands, I currently have access to the administrator account for the board. I can appoint moderators, or hand the account over to someone else, if need be.
Now, the big question is, what should be done with it? -
An idea for it... by
on 2008-08-27 16:05:00 UTC
Link to this
It's a good idea for the PGs and any potential Mods to be kept seperate. Absolute power will corrupt absolutely, as the saying goes.
Rather, why don't we keep the Moderators a secret? We hold the vote, etc, or rather, Techno-Dann does, deleting everyone's vote as they come in. Once done, he tallies the votes, and the selected Moderator would gain their position, and be notified, with no-one else knowing the result.
That way, if a Moderator tries to lord it over people, they can have their position removed because no-one is meant to know who it is. If they reveal it, then a new Moderator is chosen.
The PPC Secret Service, or something like that. Techno-Dnan acts as the visible head *Coughs* Target *Coughs*, while the other one works behind the scenes. -
PPC Secret Service? by

-
I'm not sure... by
on 2008-08-28 03:08:00 UTC
Link to this
Personally, I guess I don't like it because it requires the admin and all the mods to be trustworthy. If someone out to get us got mod powers, or for that matter, if there was ever a nasty debate involving a moderator, there'd be no accountability at all - the moderator involved could edit whatever she pleased, and nobody would have solid proof of who had done it. (Not even the admin - that's one of the limitations of the system.)
I prefer the "break glass in case of fire" approach to admin powers - they really should only be used when there's an obvious need - spammers, trolls who wouldn't go away when asked nicely, and so on. As long as discussions stay civil (and we've got a great track record when it comes to that), we shouldn't need admin intervention at all. -
...That idea is terrifying. by
on 2008-08-28 02:48:00 UTC

I mean, I kinda like it but the idea of the PPC Secret Service is just scary. It'll be like the DIS only hopefully not.

OA has a point... by
on 2008-08-28 09:37:00 UTC
Link to this
Although it is rather an interesting idea. We don't have to be unaware of who the admin is, but it doesn't need to be brought up in general discussion. That way, if someone or something new starts kicking off, that admin can step in and fix the problem witout being singled out as a target. Maybe a little more like the DIA than the DIS. A tiny group wholly dedicated to the PPC's protection, rather than a group dedicated to bullying and silencing those whom they didn't want around.
And I'm babbling. I'll shush now. -
Everyone seems to have stated my opinions, but... by
on 2008-08-27 10:48:00 UTC
Link to this
I just thought I'd raise my voice in agreement with the majority.
We don't need mods. The PPC is run on the grounds of modding ourselves and each other. What we do need is an admin to fix the technical problems. As others have said, Techno-Dann is our most internet-savvy person, and has been handling the problem since day one. If we do need to vote, I'm going with him.
If he decides to retire or something, we can decide on a new admin then. -
Everyone else already said it for me but... by
on 2008-08-27 05:44:00 UTC
Link to this
I agree with what everyone's said for the most part. Mods should be seperate from the PGs, though I don't see why someone can't be both if they fit the criteria, they should be internet savvy and responsible and they should not be planning on fading out anytime soon.
I vote Dann keeps the admin powers, he's our resident tech expert, right? He's as good a choice as anyone else. -

This power absolutely has to be separated from the Permission Giving power. They're fundamentally different things, and combining the two would give whoever had both far too much control over things.
I'm open to correction on this, but I think it's a very big mistake if we decide to combine the two roles, or even give Board control to any particular Permission Givers.
hS -
I agree partially... by
on 2008-08-27 02:36:00 UTC
Link to this
At the very least, becoming one (a permission giver or a moderator) must not imply the other - they're different jobs, and a person who is good at one may be absolutely the wrong choice for the other.
Onto a more fundamental question... do we even need moderators? We've gone for five years without any, and the only times we've needed any administrative powers have been a few massively ugly affairs- the sort of thing that can easily be removed by a single administrator. -
I agree here... by
on 2008-08-27 07:21:00 UTC
Link to this
As long as being a PG isn't synonymous with having Board powers, or vice-versa, I don't see a problem. I do imagine, though, that anyone given Board power will already be a PG, and I have no problem with that.
Frankly, I think we'll only need one (or two, in case of emergency) administrators, and indeed, we don't need moderators. So I'm all for giving a few people the technical power and just letting it go. -
Moderators by
on 2008-08-27 06:52:00 UTC
Link to this
There are two ways of looking at moderators:
One, and it's the way most moderators seem to see themselves, as authorities -- people with the power and authority to keep the peons in line.
The other (which I think is the right way to look at it) is as garbage collectors, hired to clean up spambot droppings and similar detritus.
The trick is, first, to appoint people with the garbageman mindset, and second, to make sure they don't drift towards the dictator mindset.
The problem is, of course, that there's no 100% reliable way to go about it. Or if there is, in 14 years of moderating everything from a BBS to numerous Web forums, I haven't met anyone who's figured it out. The best solution seems to be having a stable, sane, steady, and well-trusted person in charge -- Techno-Dann, in our case -- and having that person act as "benevolent dictator", able to appoint mods as needed to take care of shoveling up bot droppings if and when needed.
Moderating users' posts can be a slippery slope, because there's always the matter of lines and where you draw them. The "what is a flame?" poll in my FFN profile is still live, and it's interesting seeing the spread of the responses. There are people who draw the line maybe a little harsher than I do, and people who think all but the mildest and most apologetic concrit is a "flame", and many somewhere in between. The same thing happens on forums: What exactly constitutes a "personal attack"? How far is it to "off topic"? What exactly is "unfriendly" and is it different for different people? When you have people making judgment calls about that, you get drama.
My rules as moderator:
1. Never mod a discussion you're participating in. At the very least there is a perception of a conflict of interest; at the worst, you'll turn into a modzi.
2. Use the least-destructive moderation possible: For instance, move a post rather than editing it; edit it rather than delete it.
3. If you edit or delete a post, put a copy of the original on the mods' board for review.
Obviously 2 and 3 require a forum that has editing and moving capabilities, and somewhere to put the mods' board. The basic principles, though, remain the same.
Resentment and distrust of the mods is more destructive to an online community than any amount of off-topic posting, flaming, and board drama. 99% of the time, that distrust is self-inflicted, as the mods get above themselves (much like politicians) and see themselves as your masters, not our servants.
So, I propose that the title of anyone given moderation powers on this board be "Bot Manure Shoveler" and they be issued a patch depicting a shovel and a wheelbarrow.
Moderators, like fire, make good servants but poor masters. -

I mean, we vote in our PGs because they are people who have been active for a decent amount of time and we trust them, both of which are qualities we'd ideally like in whoever has modly control of the Board. But giving all PGs moderator's powers over the Board, as you say, would be a Bad Thing.
I suppose the fair path to take would be to hold some kind of an election for Board Moderators and choose say three of them, or something, and then make sure that one cannot be both a PG and a Boad Moderator.
Having said that, I think that at least for the moment, Techno-Dann is probably the most logical choice as Moderator given he is computer and Internet-savvy and the person who knows most about the whole situation. -

I admit, we should definitely think about making Boarders who have already proven that they are responsible and reasonable. This does include a fair number of the PGs, but also a lot of the oldbies. So maybe community vote?

LotR/HP Badfic Search by
on 2008-08-27 16:44:00 UTC
Link to this
I've looking for a reasonably well-written yet still utterly cr*p badfic that I once saw. It's a Harry Potter/Lord of the Rings crossover with (I believe) a bit of Dragonball Z lumped in. It involves Harry getting booted into Middle-Earth and randomly becoming Harold the Black, the sixth Istari (or something, I really can't remember much).
I believe the title was 'BLANK BLANK Arda'. Can anyone point me?
Question: Arda means 'Middle-Earth' in Sindarin, right? *is probably very wrong* -

I seem to remember a story where he's considered the "black wizard" and he's the only one who can get to ME. He saves Boromir, and destroys the Uruk-Hai at Helm's Deep. He keeps going back and forth between ME and Hogwarts, or something like that.
It's been a while, but I don't remember any Dragonball Z in it. -
On second thought... by

I think you--or I--may be confusing two badfics--"Sanctuary of Arda" is the LotR/HP/Dragonball Z crossover, like Eni said. There's another fic, "The Black Wizard of Middle-earth" or something like that where he goes to Beleriand, becomes Harold the Black, and makes Fëanor OOC. I could be wrong, though.

Woe to Pride and Prejudice: legal Mary Sue fanfic! by

Link to this
From the Mary Sues LJ community:
Mary Sues: Officially Sanctioned by British TV Writers
Ladies and gentlemen of this fine community, I have harrowing news for us all. The common Mary Sue is now invading the TV. She will soon be broadcast to British television audiences in a brand new series, titled Lost in Austen to be shown on Saturday nights.
And if it's not bad enough, they're messing with a national treasure. One of the greatest books to come out of England's green and pleasant land.
Oh yes, she's about to rape Pride and Prejudice.
The basic premise is: an "ordinary girl", fed up with her life, gets pulled into the world of Pride and Prejudice and starts messing up the world of the canon characters. Unapologetically. Only she is the key to the world of Elizabeth Bennet: there's a hole in her wall that leads right to another world!

My agents would give her a trip to ANOTHER wonderful universe: Harry Potter! As soon as she walked through the portal, they'd plunk her down in front of the mirror of Erised and watch her waste away.
It is a truth universally acknowledged that we're all longing to escape.
Speak for yourself, darling. I read P&P for its realism and satire as much as its romance. Qualities which seem to be missing from the farce that is "Lost in Austen." -
It sounds wonderful! by

I'm willing to sign my Agents up for the group mission. That is, if you need help. Which you probably won't.
Let's not forget the Mirror of Galadriel. Convince the Lady of Light to will only P&P images to appear before Mary Sue's eyes, and then we shall see what happens if you do touch the water. Hopefully it is not something good. Otherwise, we can try and drown her in the Mirror. *evil grin* -
Well, I'd prefer the Mirror of Erised... by
on 2008-09-08 02:49:00 UTC

...for the simple reason that death would be much slower, and of the Sue's own making.
See, one of the things I REALLY hate about this TV show is:
a) it makes Pride and Prejudice sound like escapist literature, which it is NOT.
b) it legitimizes escapism without consequences, that is, the Mary Sue sees nothing wrong with escaping into Pride and Prejudice instead of dealing with the consequences of everyday life. That, my friend, is called turning yourself into a victim of circumstance.
One of my favorite passages ever comes from the Neverending Story. It has this to say about Fantastica (the world of human fantasy):
'There are people who can never go to Fantastica,' said Mr. Coriander, 'and others who can, but who stay there forever. And there are just a few who go to Fantastica and come back. Like yuou. And they make both worlds well again.'
That is what fantasy should be. That is what going into another world should be. The character should have enough imagination to go there, enough pragmatism to go back, and enough strength to knit her desires into the fabric of her real life, and make both her dream and day-to-day worlds whole and healthy.
...they never do that, though, do they?
~Araeph -

But I still wonder what would happen if you stick someone's head into the Mirror of Galadriel. Maybe I shall save it for a 'Sue my Agents might encounter.

the usual organiser of the Gatherings is hS, and as a Brit, he tends to arrange them in Britain. I think the only Gatherings he wasn't organising or at least present for were the Canadian ones- the one that Leto organised back in 2004 and the two-person one that happened this summer.
American Gatherings would be tricky, just for the logistics of getting everyone to the meeting place, and it'd have to be more than just a day-trip thing. -

I will probably be rather poor at that point, and I live down the other end of the country. (I know that's a poor excuse, seeing as hS managed to reach the last Gathering in plenty of time and he had just as much of a trek to get there.)
If we get more of an update closer to the time, I might just be able to go. It all depends on my available budget, but I really would like to go to another Gathering. -

Nazgul vs. Nuzgul by

I saw a piece of flair on Facebook last night that reads 'Does Peter Jackson know the Nuzgul are chasing Harry Potter?', so I sent a message to the creator saying it's nAzgul, not nUzgul. The following was her reply:
"Darling can you say Annal Retentive"
Why, yes I can, but I don't know what 'annal retentive' is. I also wasn't aware that it was anal (one 'n', darling) to spell correctly. BTW, according to her profile, she graduated from college this year. I weep for the attitudes graduates have today. -

My reply to the git:
Short, sweet, and to the point.
Sweetie, it's not anal to spell things correctly. Anal would be pointing out that there's no way Nazgul could be chasing Harry Potter because it's two different fandoms, like one person I told about your incredibly amusing attempt to insult me. If you think I'm anal, just wait until you find out how anal bosses are. -

Logically, it means you are a keeper of history, as Wikipedia defines annal as 'Annals (Latin Annales, from annus, a year) are a concise form of historical writing which record events chronologically, year by year.'

Did you also point out to her that, despite physical similarities and abilities, Nazgul and Dementors are not the same thing. And that it was Tolkien, not PJ, that created the Nazgul.

Requests for help re Bad Slash missions. by
on 2008-08-30 23:00:00 UTC
Link to this
I'm back from holiday, and thinking about actually organising some of my backlog. Some of it involves Bad Slash missions. However, I am not a natural Bad Slasher, and so must request help ...
1) The Naruto mission Kitsune106 and I agreed to share. We're struggling with what to do with the "pet" copies of the characters. Obviously the two leading felines need to die because they're disgustingly cutesy and nothing like the characters they're supposedly based on. What about the rest of them? Ansela recommended killing the lot at once, and they are blatantly character replacements because even I've read enough of the manga to know that Hinata is not a hermaphrodite with mouse ears (not making this up, I swear), but some of them might be salvageable or just too cute to kill. Even if the ones supposed to be based on canon characters aren't salvageable, what about the babies they produce in the later chapters?
2) I require help with the sporking of a much shorter Harry Potter badfic entitled "Suck", which mutilates the Nine Inch Nails song of the same name and apparently features Harry Potter raping Remus Lupin, or at least engaging in a deeply dubious situation with him. I believe Paddlebrains offered to help me with it when I first brought it to the attention of the PPC, but if she's busy it's okay. Any tips from anyone else would be welcome regardless.
Thanks in advance. -

I don't remember exactly, except that it was disturbing and OOC. I was distracted by the abomination in the name of Trent Reznor, which I refuse to leave unavenged.
Sadly Agent Stormsong doesn't share my fervour, he'd probably go back and be lynched by the Nighthunt rather than have to spend a whole mission listening to a hideously off-key version of an industrial rock song, so Skyfire needs someone else to help her. He can babysit the M-kids in the meantime. (And then get punished for telling the Flowers exactly where they can stick the songfic by being roped in to help Naomi and Drake with the Naruto mission.) -

I read that Naruto thing, and I'd say kill the horrible character replacements but save the babies. The kids might not be so bad in the long run, but even with my fairly limited knowledge of the Naruto universe I could see all the characters were completely wrong.
That Gaara thing needs to die. The only reason I ever even watched any Naruto episodes was because Gaara's backstory intrigued me. But that raccoon... thing... ugh, kill it. -
Are there any replacements that might be saveable? by
on 2008-08-31 00:48:00 UTC
Link to this
They plainly aren't the Naruto characters, but character replacements have been recruited before. Kit says the Hinata one isn't so bad, though I haven't read enough of the manga to judge her.
The babies will be saved whatever happens, though. What are good names for hermaphroditic human/raccoon/tadpole things? -

The Hinata mouse did seem pretty similar to what I've seen, and Sakura-bunny really didn't have enough time in focus to be totally ruined as a character.
For the tadpole-raccoon-human babies, maybe Milly and Jack? -
Hinata and Sakura might be salvageable by

That is, if you can figure out a way to save Sakura from Sasuke's unnecessary murderous attack. Hinata seems to act like she does in canon, i.e. shy and crushing on Naruto.

I'm assuming that by the Makes-Things memorial fund you mean the MTFFAT. Now, I haven't much knowledge about Naruto, so could I maybe have a bit more explanation of the circumstances under which this "fast rabbit thing" appears? I'm sure Tyler would welcome a partner of some kind, but I'd like to know a bit more about it first.
-
Okay ... by
on 2008-08-31 13:47:00 UTC
Link to this
This is the character the rabbit thing is supposedly based on: http://naruto.wikia.com/wiki/Sakura_Haruno Imagine this girl as a teeny version of herself with pink bunny ears (and, apparently, a penis, since it insists that "all pets are hermaphrodites"), and that's what we'd be bringing back.
This bunny thing doesn't actually do anything except be ludicrously promiscuous (which the real Sakura is not), punch Naruto-kitten-thing (which the real Sakura may do, and anyway anything that displays violence towards the disgusting cutesy paedo-bait kitten thing is probably on our side), and get killed pointlessly and messily by Sasuke-kitten-thing because the author hates the actual character Sakura. Therefore, she plainly isn't the real Sakura, but we're not sure whether she needs killing. -

I'm not sure. by
on 2008-08-31 17:27:00 UTC
Link to this
The only people she's shown hitting in canon, outside of combat and training, are Naruto and Sai, the latter only when he calls her a hag, insults Sasuke or takes his teasing of Naruto too far. It's more of a comedic device than anything else.
Of course, this is a sickening paedo-bait kitten-thing and not Naruto, and it's a vicious unwarranted attack on Sakura's part not a funny moment so it's possible that Naruto's complete inability to touch canon with a ten-foot barge pole and the fact that this is a yaoi fic therefore canonical female love interests are 'teh ebil' is what provokes the attack. -
I'd say that if she's violent towards the kitten-thing ... by
